There’d be no experienced ruck depth behind Naitanui

Cripps was our best performed small forward last year and is training as well as anyone at the club

We used the 2nd last pick in the draft with multiple clubs passing in picks despite having list spots available as they weren’t happy with the players still left. That’s who you’d be replacing those veterans with

They wouldn’t help in 2023 and odds are people like you would be putting them on the delist pile in a year or two

Really hope LEdwards comes good - he really stood up for us in that Richmond game in 2021, was watching the highlights the other day and even the commentators were getting around him saying they couldn't believe Adelaide didn't take him. Bit worried he's been struck with injury at the unfortunate 'prove yourself' period of his career and won't get a fair run at it - I want to see him play a good 6-7+ games of AFL or 15-17+ games of WAFL in a row either this season or next and have a chance to show that he's up to it or not with a sound body.

Regarding cutting veterans, it's exactly how others have said, got to do it in waves rather than annihilate your list for the sake of loading up on the dregs of the draft. I actually disagree with Suma in the sense that I wouldn't be upset if we won under 10 games next year as long as we see some development/clarity of roles from the younger players, the veterans help them develop and we go in with another good draft hand next year, moving up the ladder in 2024 and beyond.

Here's the thing. If your group of 22-26 year olds is shit, contracted or not you can't just dump the older players even if you have picks to replace them with.

The club actively forced 2 players out of the club this year. One who had hit a contract trigger and one who was contracted.

Lastly I think people need to understand something else. It is even more difficult now for interstate sides to win the premiership than ever before. There's 2 extra sides in the competition, the competition is at the height of competitiveness where 1-2% can be the difference between winning and losing and due to the combination of the extra sides plus academies and compensation picks every club realistically needs an extra year near the bottom than they did prior to 2012 to rebuild to secure the same amount of talent.

Round 3, pick 1 used to be pick 33. That's around the point in most drafts where it really does become lucky dip. Round 3 pick 1 now is normally anywhere from 40-43 onwards. When WCE speaks about top 30 picks it's because thats where the club sees the cutoff in genuinely draftable talent with at least 1 elite trait is most years numbers wise.

So the club looks for as many top 30 or as close to it picks as possible.

We were playing a slow transition game plan then. Switch sides, retain posession etc.

I expect that our new quicker plan of running and handballing through the lines he can play a role. Overlap gut running to provide a 1 - 2 handball for a younger faster mid looking to get it back. Not as an inside mid either.

Gaff looks lighter, at his age I hope he is dropping kgs to help with his running and general wear and tear. Become that well positioned link man on the outside of a stoppage who will link up with a runner.

This team is skilled, fast and versatile and pretty big

Really like this team - not that I think they'll actually leave Gaff or Duggan out round 1 but I'd love if this was the case - good balance and sets a good selection standard.

Really highlights how much we need a specialist crumbing forward with Willie gone. We've got some good forwards who happen to be small but none of them are really natural crumbers first and foremost. Not heaps in reserve either.
