I didn't like him in the fwd line. Too slow and the ball was getting sucked out too quick . Plus we have Lloyd Rioli and Butler.
I think bench or BL.

I hear what your saying, I prefer Markov and C.Ellis in the backline for their foot skills

And like pace in the fwd line so if he can't make it in the guts it's VFL but he is too good for that, it's an issue

If you don't get picked to play midfield I would say that would be a lack of opportunity.... You can't get picked in the backline and then tell the coach to shove it and play in the mids o_O

It's not lack of opportunity if you are just not good enough or don't have the capacity to play mid.

FB: Grimes - Astbury - Castagna/Short
HB: Markov - Rance - McIntosh

R: Nankervis - Cotchin - Prestia
C: Grigg - Martin - Menadue/Butler

HF: Rioli - Riewoldt - Lloyd
FF: Chol - Griffiths - Edwards

INT: Caddy - Miles - Vlastuin -

For me it is simple the younger blokes take precedent and the soft ***** just dont get a game where possible.
This is by far the best side picked. Conca, B Ellis, Houli and hunt should be out of the side immediately as they are all turnover kings. B ellis and Hoult shirk contact. Soft as mush. The only player on your list I'd move on is Griff but I do understand that we have no talls. Maric should not have been retained and we need to introduce all the new youth the moment they show any form in the VFL. I'd rather we continue to develop and ending down the ladder would not be a disarster. We must look to the future. Our list cannot contend. Sadly Hardwick is coaching for his future and will not develope the kids. So our rebuild will not start until the final quarter of the year when he knows his time is up.

Guys,Guys,Guys.

Lets not kid ourselves we all know Dimmwit will have T.Hunt in the best 22 come round 1.He's just a worse version of B.Ellis
He actually works harder than B.Ellis.

Can't see Vlastuin playing in the middle much.
People have been screaming for it and have had a taste. Pretty obvious why he hasn't been in there.
I can actually see him just becoming a bit of a Jack Grimes, a good footballer who isn't really anything in the modern game and just sort of fades away.
Footy is pretty brutal on that type of player now.

Will wait for a few actual rounds but quite possible that he will end up back in the backline.
Not a bad thing though as he is a very reliable, tough defender.

I really like this lineup. Which almost certainly means it won't be the one we go into Rd 1 with. I really hope I'm wrong, but I can see Hunt, B.Ellis, Houli and Conca, not only all playing, but all playing in the back line where none of them appear to be suited.

Who is our best lock down small defender? We have always struggled against the likes of Betts, Garlett, Ballantine... for me Vlaustuin is wasted in this role.

Does Conca take it? Does he have the speed and grit?

Or does Short do it, but does he have enough experience?

Houli hasn't convinced in this spot but is needed for his skills and rebounding... not sure KMac can do it either. And Morris is probably never coming back, and offered too little else.

Thoughts?
As others have said Grimes is our best option at the moment
I'd like to see Drummond earmarked for that role, has the speed and athleticism, just needs the exposure to playing on dangerous small forwards. Short is the other guy I like in the backline but playing a more attacking role.

Not sure he works harder, but goes in harder which is what Dimma loves about him.
He does go in hard and he's played out of position. He's not a defender. What he is, I believe, is a run with defensive midfielder who can kick the odd goal going the other way, because the player he tags will never pay him any attention. That's what he does best. That's what he did at Geelong. I don't think he's in our best team, but if he's going to be used, that's his game.
