I reckon the stats lie a little.

I reckon every game there was one or two marks Grimes dropped (or gave away a free int he marking contest) that he would have take previously, then he would be in the 70+ range, and it would have been his 3rd-5th best season.

His 1 on 1 contest win rates are actually better last year compared to his best years but he’s having less one on one contests per game

So he isn’t dropping any more, if anything he is dropping less next bar the outlier year of 2022
Free kicks given away are unchanged throughout ave 1 a game

The drop in other states indicates a role change over a dramatic form drop obviously his form would of dropped to some degree but not to the amount the stats suggest

Combine that with the fact that Balta took record intercepts last season it’s pretty clear he played a different role

My Current 23 for Round 1.

Give some of the kids a go early I reckon, but there is hopefully going to be some handy competition for each line.

I think we are going to be able to put a pretty competitive team on the ground each week.....

I like brown and banks on the wings

Elite ball users.

I reckon those writing Grimes off will end up with some egg on their face. Tipping him to return to solid form.

Might also end up with egg on my face, but I’m backing the champion in.

He actually got a bum wrap from all of us last season - his form for mine was actually better than 2022 for large parts of games its just he'd deliver a howler or two which would just make us melt and that's all we'd remember from the games. I've had a distinct feeling he wasnt as fit or focused as he should be since 2020 along with cotch and jack(just a feeling) but the fact he's given up co captaincy to focus on himself shows he's pretty serious about this coming season.

I hope he has a good year but if father time has well and truly caught up with him, I really hope we don't keep playing him when its clear the time has come

Not sure if you caught Yze’s speech at the AGM, but it sounds like he’s pretty keen to provide some of the kids with early opportunities.

I wonder which senior players might be made to wait.. Pickett, Mccintosh, Grimes?
Graham, Prestia, Hopper, MRJ...

To me Bauer is a potential revelation as a winger. He is tall.192. mobile, an elite mark, has proven himself as both a forward and backman based on how quick he is at reading the game. Better back than Pickett, better forward than McIntosh. Worth a try to check endurance and speed, both of which are yet to be fully tested ( same with Banks) and may be a moot point with new game plan.

Doesn’t work hard enough

Doesn’t work hard enough
If Bauer doesn’t work hard enough, then no position should be available to him. I also would like to see him used or at least tried in a wing / forward flank role. If he’s not prepared to show the required work rate then send him packing. I think he can make a good fist of it as he is a very mobile type.

How about Tresize and Mcauliffe on the wing - expecting them to have a big season

Below is the team I'd like to see us use as the foundation of our 2024 line up. The focus is primarily on long term development of the next generation, while also giving us a good chance to win games or at the very least be competitive in most games. In the VFL there will be a large number of experienced premiership winners running around, who can not only provide leadership/mentoring to the kids coming through, but can be there to come in to the senior side if/when required for injuries/poor form

B: Josh Gibcus (20yo 18 games) Noah Balta (24yo 85 games) Tyler Young (25yo 19 games)

HB: Daniel Rioli (26yo 160 games) Nick Vlastuin (29yo 211 games) Jayden Short (28yo 153 games)

C: Sam Banks (20yo 6 games) Tim Taranto (26yo 137 games) Jack Ross (23yo 63 games)

R: Toby Nankervis (29yo 136 games) Jacob Hopper (27yo 130 games) Thomson Dow (22yo 17 games)

INT: Tom Brown (20yo 1 game) Tyler Sonsie (21yo 10 games) Kane McAuliffe (19yo YTD) Samson Ryan (23yo 15 games) Judson Clarke (20yo 16 games)

I don't mind it all all, I think Broady is the one thats stiff, he was probably our most consitant def last year and offeres flexibility.
And Trezise is one of the next gen kids I woud like to see us put games into as well, as I reckon he will compliment them extrememly well in a couple of years time.

For me it's Broad v Young v Brown for the final spot in the back 7. I'd like to start with Young and Brown if their preseason warrants selection, if they struggle then we can bring in Broad, but I wouldn't be against Broad getting the starting slot either.

I'd happily move Short to a wing to allow Broady in there, Ross playing Mid minutes instead of wing minutes which means KM or JC might miss.

Im all for playing the kids, but playing too many in the one side before they have that experience presents some challenges as well.

Who is JC - Jason Costanza !

Grimes deserves the chance to show he still can be a very valuable player. I also think renewed enthusiasm with a new coaching team will be just the injection required for our older players. I’m also backing him in.
Offsite injections are illegal, ask the Essendon Football Club if in doubt!

He did play a different role bc he was failing in the role he was once competent in. This happened to a few guys last year That were past their use by date. The CD rather than dropping them and giving kids a go played musical chairs with the old legends.
