However you want to structure it, doesn't really matter. All those current guys are versatile bar Young, all the dynasty guys were versatile bar Astbury.

I think the crux of my point is that I don't think it's necessary to have 4 key def types. Grimes was a bit different since you can trust him with the opposition's best small forawrd, like Eddie Betts or Charlie Cameron, so really, you're only playing the 3 key defenders in Rance, Astbury and Broad as genuine key defenders.

I trust Broad with a medium forward like Toby Greene, or someone who plays like a medium forward in Jeremy Cameron, but I don't trust him if he's up against Charlie Cameron, and we even see it with the matchups, Dan Rioli is usually taking the opposition's best small forward. That kinda leaves what use to be teh Grimes role a little bit redundant.

I just don't think that the idea that you play the extra tall to allow Balta to play as the intercept defender is necessary. The issue is that we've played Balta on the opposition's best key fwd, the Larkeys and Mitch Lewis of the world, which means that Balta is tasked with being the intercept defender, but also needs to be accountable for the opposition's most lethal key forward. If we really wanted Balta to be our next Rance, we wouldn't have him directly matchup on the opposition's best key fwd.

I just hope we don’t see Baker forward. I know he can play the pressure role ok but to me he’s just so much more valuable down back or I wouldn’t even be against him spending more time in a permanent minefield role.

Also Intrigued to see where he sees Balta playing. Still scratching my head over that one myself. But back or forward I hope to see an A grader , he has too much talent to be anything but.

Players will have specific roles and implied too many have been thrown all over the place.

He looked lost at times playing deep back but there were other games that he intercepted everything and played like an AA kpd.

Same deal as a KPF, the good and the ugly.

Change my mind on a weekly basis re Baltas best position. At the moment I have a slight leaning to playing him forward. Just think it’s better to ease Gibcus back into the KPD role he’s always played and continue with the very impressive Young deep back.
Playing Noah forward also allows you to inject him into the ruck role for short bursts, something he does very well, with his aggressive follow up at ground level.

Dermie stated in the last game that Balta is too clumsy to be a defender bc he makes dumb errors. He claimed that he’s less risk to the team up forward. I think he’s wrong as this season we lost our way with injuries and he was pinballed around too much. The other problem was I think Grimes was poor with Broad and it put a lot of onus on him. Need to get Trezise to play Grimes role and I think we need a Miller or Gibcus supporting him for that extra big body.

But I hardly recall Grimes ever playing on an opposition key fwd despite Grimes being the size he was. We always setup with Astbury on the opposition's best key fwd, and Rance on the opposition's second key fwd. Astbury kept the best key fwd quiet, and Rance would lead the second best key fwd to the ball like an owner with their dog. I don't think we ever played Rance on the opposition best key fwd, like a Hawkins, and I don't think we do the same with Balta. I mean, we even had Garthwaite start and play on Hawkins in a match rather than going with Rance. We even had Vlastuin play on opposition key fwds for about a season or a season and a half.

In you comparison there, Broad would be the one taking over Grimes' role, Balta for Rance and Gibcus for Astbury (I think Gibcus has the ability to both lockdown and intercept at the same time, a bit like what Sam De Koning was lauded for in his breakout season for Geelong in 2022).

Rancey was the go to player for Buddy...
Gibcus I'd like to see return thro' the Magoos and build up some form/touch/reliability...
Brown and Trezise both to have a chance of starting depending on their pre-season form...gota show they want it!
And Pickett is a lock...with a break and a clear head from his Court issues ought to be flying next year. Hard as a cats head!

I probably should've worded it better.

Rance never played on the Hawkins type key fwd, and I wouldn't categorise Hawkins and Buddy as the same type of key fwd.

We've played Balta on these kind of key fwds, such as Larkey, Mitch Lewis, Josh Kennedy before he retired, etc. when I think we should be having someone else play on these key fwds, and have Balta play on a lesser fwd to help his intercept game, like we did with Rance whenever we came up against a team with that kind of key fwd.

The midfield candidates are horrible with a couple of exceptions. This will be Yze's biggest problem.

That's the big conundrum...is Ross able to match it with the game's mid elites?!?
Go a long ways to giving us a selection problem!

The depth is pretty poor all round bar defenders so we'll need a good injury run. **** it'd be nice to shove it up all the haters and rise back up the ladder.

The only thing I'm umm-ing and ahh-ing over with this is whether Prestia is a lock, and whether someone like Dow or Sonsie should take Prestia's spot on the bench.

I don't think you need all of TT, Hopper, Bolton and Prestia if you still want to include someone like Dow or Sonsie as 4th I/C, and if you still want Dusty going into the middle, then I think you're playing one too many midfielders that doesn't have a natural second position.

You're probably missing a genuine pressure small forward (something Yze has said he wants to bring back, I believe), and depending on how MRJ does, could see more midfield minutes as well instead of being a pure small fwd.
