Triiple Brownlow medallist, AFL Legend and St Kilda Team of the Century member Ian Stewart basically threw a match when playing for the Saints. He did not try and made a direct effort to lose contests to the person he was playing on, Billy Barrot. He was secretly engineering a trade to Richmond, with a swap for Barrot. Barrot had been a very good player, but Stewart spoke so highly of him throughout the season that when he deliberately underperformed, he told St Kilda he was just beaten by a champion. Stewart wanted a trade to Richmond, but it was unlikely, given he was a key contributor to the Saints only Premiership and had (at that stage) won two Brownlows. Barrot's best days were well behind him and he was suffering from serious mental illness.

So when they played in Round 15, Stewart did all he could to make Barrot look good and for the Saints to lose.

In my opinion, that's cheating. You should not get named in a club's Team of the Century, let alone become an AFL Legend, after doing that.

My source for the cheating rumour: the man himself. He was speaking at a fundraiser on the Gold Coast billed as the first time three triple Brownlow medalists had spoken at an event. Dick Reynolds and Bob Skilton were the other speakers.

I was 100% sober - long drive home and I was getting married the next day. Skilton told me (a bloke he's met for 2 minutes) not to get married.
It seemed an awful thing to say at the time. (In retrospect I shouldn't have, but that's another story).

When Stewart spoke at the podium, he basically bragged about conning St Kilda by deliberately underperforming the season he had decided to leave.

I posted on a St Kilda discussion board at the time of the event (1997) and everyone shouted me down, saying they wouldn't take the word of an internet troll over an AFL legend. But yeah, he did admit it that night.

All my life, I'd heard stories about Dick Reynolds. Dad had been given a chance to train at Essendon and had manned up on him. Dad didn't get drafted, but he did manage to spoil Dick Reynolds in a few marking contests.

So I had often wondered what the man himself was like. I was shocked at how much of a gentleman he was, and how he encouraged competitiveness but sportsmanship above all else.

Quite an informative night.

So Ian Stewart was both a cross-dresser and a turncoat.

So versatile. Definite team of the century member.

Rumour confirmed - the media hype around Rioli jnr wasn’t matched by the clubs. Will be very surprised if he plays a game in 2021. None of the clubs willing to force Richmond to use a higher pick in case they didn’t match it.

Richmond already carry one dead set passenger Rioli, why not 2...

In all honesty I’ve heard zero hype about him.

About as hyped as the Nicholas Winmar who the Saints drafted

The only reason he won’t play a game is because he’s going to have to break into the greatest side of the modern era. He’d walk into weaker teams like Freo, Collingwood, North, etc.

If you think a kid picked in the 50’s would walk into any of these teams you have no clue.

You think the 50th best 18yo is better than the best 22.. at any afl club?

Don’t feed the troll.

To be fair, it’s difficult to tell the trolls and the genuinely delusional Tigers apart at times.
