Windy Hill : Essendon

As a kid I used to climb that very section of the wall and watch the game with a brilliant view over the crowd.View attachment 1198249

Serious respect from me because that is bloody high. Look at the size of the kids versus the size of the wall. And look at the bloke on the left. I would need a harness and a nappy to do that.

Yep lol…I can remember plenty of matches sitting up there when the wind was howling and just making sure you had a firm grip on top of the fence.

And I do remember the day sometime around maybe 81’-82’ when I was 10 or 11 when an official was up there telling us to all get down because they were banning kids climbing up there.

The next season my old man bought a membership at the Essendon social club next to the bowling club and we’d sit on the brick fence with a 6 ft drop behind us. Much safety spot 👌😊

For those not from Melbourne or are too young to remember

This may be an urban myth but...

I once knew a bloke who rode in a cab in Melbourne many years ago. The cabbie said he drove Franco Cozzo to Flemington racecourse one day. Monsignor Cozzo didn't actually have that big Italian accent, he just turned it on for his TV ads. Gold!

I just watched the Franco Cozzo documentary and if he's putting on the accent, then he's doing it every waking hour. BTW - it was great

This is a brilliant thread, I do love old pics.

So here's a couple I picked up when I was looking at ground sizes:

The MCG around 1926, I have increased the size a bit as it is small in the original:

The MCG Southern stand not long after it was built, looking a lot cleaner than I ever remember it:

The pocket at Brunswick St, very deep pockets at that ground:

The old grandstand at Corio Oval, looking at the car it seems to be much later than when they played there, the ground must have remained for at least a couple of decades after Geelong moved to Kardinia Park in the 1940s:

There are also a fair number of aerial shots of grounds I have found, I think from the State Library of Victoria site although a couple of Adelaide Oval I can't remember where I found. Maybe the Boyles Photos site.
