Is this a genuine white-knight attempt?

It's a rather dramatic and controversial viewpoint you've put forward there.

I don't think I've agreed with a single thing Toump has said on this forum, but there was nothing salacious about his original post.

I read it entirely from the perspective of Katy Perry as the Grand Final entertainment and not just in general existence.
Her new 'hit' single is a girl power anthem that clearly highlights her physical assets. When viewing this through the AFL Grand Final entertainment lens, it's a bit... why this?
The biggest men's sporting event on the Australian calendar. Inclusiveness is a good thing, but she certainly doesn't fit the atmosphere IMO.

If current 'girl power' Katy was performing before the Matilda's next big game it would make all the sense in the world.

At the footy, what songs can she perform other than Roar and Firework that won't sound a bit odd?

I guess we shouldn't be surprised by the AFL and music decisions though. All the new draftees last year walked on stage to collect their jumper to a female pop breakup song saying 'I'll be single soon' over and over.

They need to hand the reins over to whoever chooses the music for Channel 7's Friday night footy.
The poster's name is "Toump Ass", not simply Toump. Please be respectful.

Katy Perry has sold a lot of concert tickets and music over ~15 years, and has performed at a number of different high-profile sporting events (including the Super Bowl), which is probably why the AFL are considering her for GF pre-match entertainment.

Whether her latest single and its corresponding music video is sufficiently feminist probably won't enter the equation... and anybody suggesting otherwise can expect to be gently mocked.

Let's hope Katy Perry lip syncs and there's heaps of autotune because she is perhaps one of the worst live singers around.
Absolute fraud. genuinely horrible voice.
Gotta hand it to her, she has everyone fooled.

She’s a poor choice, and they couldn’t have struck more when the iron was cold.

People thinking this is a modern pop choice when her peak was 10-15 years ago. The reality is she’s been surpassed by contemporaries like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna etc, let alone those who’ve followed. It’d be like getting Roxette in 2004 and saying they appealed to the kids.

Anyway, whatever, it’s basically a grace note on the day, but it’s amusing this has dropped just as she’s been making headlines for how washed up her career is now.

Lol get with reality. We are never getting anyone in their peak like rihanna, gaga, swift, beiber etc unless you’re billionaire doing a wedding in india

Katy perry while not at her peak is still a grade with her catalog of hits. Family friendly with songs that are radio hits that will get the crowd going. She will probable start with roar, fill it in with some no1s and then finish it off with fireworks with fireworks pumping in the background. Def better than any other choice out there and def better than what nrl are gonna do. Even people in nsw/qld will be watching.

Katy perry still has a lazy 208m followers in instagram which is basically the modern day measure of relevance. Thats more than gaga and rihanna by the way. Plus she posted on her insta an almost full one minute video thats she doing the pregame entertainment for the afl. Thats by far the most any reach the afl has ever gotten (only 1m followers on insta), so afl has already won.

Rihanna did the superbowl literally last year. You're kidding me if you think Perry's in the same stratosphere of relevance as her.

Sounds like Perry has splashed some of Orlando's money on some bots.

The timing on this is comical. They announced this right as she’s become hugely unpopular/controversial on social media for being out of touch with the release of Woman’s World and for working on it with Dr Luke. She’s been back-pedalling hard recently re that release.

The majority of which would be US teenage girls.

I don't know if that's even true - majority were probably teenagers in 2010 when Instagram was launched and haven't noticed they're still following her. Stats show her account is losing more followers than gaining them.

I'm not saying the AFL should've gotten Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Rihanna - great for them if they do but obviously they're in demand. But if they can't get them they shouldn't try. And hell, two Australian singers had two of the most globally buzzed about pop songs of the last year, if that's the genre the AFL wants to go with (Kylie and Troye, the former of whom is more known in this country across pretty much every demographic). But booking a flash in the pan from a decade ago at the exact moment they're facing unprecedented backlash is obviously awkward.
