No issue with the coach copping criticism, Mutt.

It’s gotta be accurate though. Something that we rarely see from posters in this thread.

There’s glaring issues around getting the players to perform at the level they should and having them stay in games longer, ensuring we don’t give up control of games for too long. For a coach that’s apparently a great motivator, it’s pretty concerning.

But let’s ignore that, because apparently it’s playing Sweet, not playing Gards and McComb and a few minor changes during games that should be taking us to our 3rd premiership.

I might also add, 90% of what determines player performance, which in turn determines results isn’t done during the the game play. It’s done during pre season, pre game, during breaks and in post game reviews. So reading the rubbish that fill these threads that focuses on the other 10% is getting f*****g boring.

Why do u bother then ?
Hate to say it Charlie , only a fool wastes his time on boring social media sites when you have a choice not too .

Thanks for the reply
( or if I was unkind, the lecture)
First up , you have assumed I am blaming the coach ?
No I don’t , Geelong are clearly to good for us.
I asked did anyone notice any change during the 8 goal onslaught ?
From the tenor of your reply , you didn’t ?
But if you don’t think it is worth making some changes during these situations, then we agree to disagree.
Not sure why 1/2 dozen blokes walk around with whiteboards.

Been watching for 60 odd years , played , coached . Sure the game has changed significantly but a lot of things remain the same.

Thanks anyway

Apologies if it came off like that. My response was probably more aimed at others, just using your question.

All good KH. We don’t see things too differently.

I’m a footy tragic KH, so enjoy coming in here to talk footy with other doggie fans.

Unfortunately, some of the threads are rubbish at times. I must be a sucker for punishment.

That’s certainly something we both have in common Charlie.
Been a tragic now for 63 years.
From the day the great EJ patted me on the head I was hooked.

That’s exactly how they’re meant to read mate 😂.

Yeah, no doubt I probably post more aggressively than I should, even when some of it is responding to posters opinions, but there’s a heap of absolute s**t posted as gospel in here that makes participating in certain threads almost unbearable.

My 90/10 comment is actually based on experiences I’ve had. Obviously things are different at the top level, but I’m trying to explain to posters that quiet obviously don’t know it all works, that there’s a whole lot that goes in to getting a football team to perform and win games of footy. Of which, not a lot is whilst the games are going.
Appreciate your measured reply.

But there's quite a few posters on here, myself included, that do know how at least some of it works.

Slight tangent, but a long, long time ago I was able to sit in the Footscray reserves coach's box - pre-AFL era - for half a game - language was as eye opening as anything else! Some of the character assessments of their own players wouldn't be tolerated in 2022! And got to see a bit of pre-match preparation behind the scenes before a game, although slightly disconcerting as a teenager when your footy idols are standing only a few feet away starkers though - the ceiling is suddenly very interesting!

Also got limited access behind the scenes at times from former school mates who played senior VFL/AFL, or were senior umpires, or were part of the group who were in the senior coach's box on match day. Heard a few stories along the Rocket Eade/Will Minson lines - one where an inexperienced coach sent a msg out via the runner to a senior player, and the reply from the player was in the form of a physical threat! The runner was more sh1t scared of the player than the coach, so delivered the reply verbatim! Not sure I believe that one 100%, but my mate used to swear it was true.

Anyway, sorry, waffling on as I tend to do. I assume you gathered my challenge to your 90/10 was facetious, as I don't disagree in principle, even if the metrics are difficult to pinpoint accurately, wasn't having a go, just trying to make a point.

He should be drug tested after giving Gardner another 3 coaches votes.
Champion Data ranked Gardner 5th or 6th best WB player. Thats pretty good for a defender because the top rankings typically go to midfielders, rucks and goalkicking forwards.

i know CD isn’t perfect but it does show that Bevo’s positive assessment of Gards is not a unique one.

Times have changed haven’t they? Unfortunately nowadays, supporters don’t have the access opportunities that were available back in the day. Even just getting in to the rooms to watch them sing the song, is almost impossible to do. Unless you know someone, or have won some sort of raffle prize.

Thanks for sharing. There’s a lot of these type stories floating around in here, but we certainly don’t hear them enough.

Hopefully our coach doesn’t subscribe to the theory that 90% of his job is done before game day 😂
Many coaches have said their impact once it comes to game day in affecting the result is minimal. Leigh Matthews, Nathan Buckley, Chris Scott, off the top of my head.

I'd say it's a pretty well established fact now that the vast majority of a coach's work is done before game day. I'd certainly be listening to the people that have, you know, actually done it at the highest level.

Couldn’t do it. Deleted straight away.
I watched the one from about a month ago, didn't realise until afterwards. He spins the same B.S each week, there hasn't been anything meaningful in the message since the media team decided information was the enemy around mid 2017.

About as useful as "The goals will take care of themselves".

I see the point in terms of plans and prep.

I suppose what separates good and great coaches is those match day changes that turn a game.

Generally they relate to moving a player into or out of a position or swapping on an opposition player if things aren't going well.

Or effecting plan B to stop a run on?

Like Libba to Kennedy after half time in the 2016 GF.

I think playing off in Grand Finals and winning premierships is what separates the great coaches from the good/ok coaches.

I'm not at all in the anti-Bevo brigade, but Libba to Kennedy was a ploy developed at half time in the rooms by King and Corey.

That response is very specific in details (not doubting you) just seems very specific.

You must be mistaken.

Bevo’s assistants don’t get a say in things. They’re just yes men.

The Libba Kennedy for all we know is a time he did listen and take it on board.

We will never know how many times assistant coaches suggestions have been over ruled/disregarded/ignored and vice versa

Don't think they're yes men but to what extent their opinions are taken on board is anyone guess.
