Maybe we don't have enough extracurricular "jobs" for the players where they can earn a few hundred grand on the side? Or in the same vein - post retirement "opportunities"? Or maybe it's just that we don't get to play in front of 90,000 on ANZAC Day? 35,000 at Marvel is a good turnout for us.

We certainly aren't a fashionable team. Seems like we'll always be regarded as the battlers from the west, even when we're playing finals. I don't know how you break that image, or whether we even want to. A lot of people got riled earlier this year when the club seemed to be trying to change its image.
Yes, your definitely right about extracurricular "jobs". I live in Torquay and know of some of the gifts Geelong recruits have been given over the years. My friend is also the accountant for many of the big names, so I hear of a few of the trades early. I can tell you Dangerfield for example had already committed to Geelong close to a full 2 years before announced. I'm sure that is still happening today, especially major free agents yet kept quite, informal agreements between managers and their financial advisors yet they cannot announce until certain times. For example forget about trying to get a free agent for 2023 they are likely already all secured, you need to be chasing 2024 free agents now

It would be interesting to find out why players do not choose the bulldogs as a side they would trade to even when we are a contending team.
Look at our history. Hall and Acker - fantastic for us yet due to off field issues no other club wanted them. Treloar, didn't want to come to us, Pies forced his hand. I can't think of any big name top 20 player who has ever nominated the bulldogs. The club need a deep dive to find out why.
We won a GF and attracted an aging Cloke who lasted a year. Richmond win a GF and attract Lynch a leading goal kicker who will give them 10 years. In todays footy, trades and free agency is now so important, it has kept Geelong up for years. Unfortunately, whatever we are doing isn't working. Relying on Bevo's past relationships is not good enough...Duryea, O'brien, Suckling. Thats another reason why having experience assistant coaches is important, they can poach players who worked well with them in the past.
How often do top 20 players really change clubs. 1 maybe two a year?

When they do they invariably go to clubs that have historically attracted the big names. Or into a market with 9 other teams.

Geelong in particular have the advantage of luring players back to the club who grew up in one of the games football heartlands that just happens to be in their backyard. Combine this with the easy access to the Surf Coast during their down time and you can see why they have such a distinct advantage over other clubs and why it is that they can continue to attract free agents and pay them unders. Allegedly.

Contrast this with the Western Bulldogs. Not only do we have to battle against historical perceptions of our club as an scrappy underdog. We have to deal the fact that the area doesn't produce the elite talent of areas and the lure of home like Geelong and its surrounds does. Combine this with the reality of being surrounded by dying heavy industry and the Werribee sewerage farms things that dont quite have the same cachet and marketing pull of the Surf Coast and its surrounds and you start to get a picture of what we're up against.

Why is it that whenever the topic turns to our clubs recruitment of quality players to the club that the names Josh Bruce and Alex Keath always seem to get lost? These guys weren't bottom of the list turds that we polished and turned into gold and they have both arrived in the years after our Premiership. They were both very good players and could've gone anywhere, yet still chose to come to use. Even with the disadvantages that I have outlined above. Bruce. Keath. Duryea Treloar (it matters not that we may not've been his first choice, given his first choice was to stay at Collingwood) and Crozier have all been massive wins for our recruiters. O'brien like most of our recruitment form other clubs looks to be a canny selection. Indeed our premiership was built on the back of recruiting guys exactly like this. Schache and Martin are probably going to go down as misses, but nobody bats 1000.

Would Leon Cameron be a good candidate for new senior assistant coach?

The true answer is “I don’t know “ but looking from a long long way away and on the outside I am not sure he has the status or inclination to be the stand up to Bev guy we need. His lack of ultimate success as a coach does not give the gravitas needed for the role if you want some one who will challenge Bevs ideas and fight for change. If you just want someone who will improve the performance of players in one section of the team then he could be your man, if he really wants to do it ( I think he may want a break more than anything)

He used to stand up to Rocket, he’s worked under Clarko & Sheedy. He’s as experienced as they come if Bevs not going to listen to his input then who will he listen to? If it’s a non negotiable they’ve won a flag to have a worthy opinion, well it’s going to be a short list of names. Perfect role for him to come back to the club he loved in some sort of overseeing role, seeing as once you’re done as a head coach you don’t usually get a second opportunity it’ll probably the best he’ll get plus the best we’ll get. Makes sense

Is that really a problema? The CEO runs the show day to day and he has been very visible since his arrival.
I don't get it either. We had PG who was a pretty visible character and a pretty good representative. But would it have mattered if he wasn't so visible in the media but still achieved the same things in his dealings with the AFL.

Jeff Kennet and Eddie McGuire are former presidents who wouldn't shut up about anything but to what end. Over exposed much.

I don't know who the presidents of any clubs are at the moment, including ours, but I don't feel a great need to know, as long as ours is doing what is required behind the scenes.

Ameet thingym'bob seems to have a media presence and seems a sensible enough chap.

I’m officially over our coaching after tonight, how the **** do we have a game going down to the wire and we have Buku ****ing Khamis rucking with under 10 minutes left. We’ve been handed a rucking lesson by Rhys Stanley ffs, it was down to the first quarter getting killed that made it a bridge too far to win.

Absolutely inexcusable decisions made and we are going to have to listen to excuses saying it was “our execution, our pressure was off early”. The only execution here is ending our own season through stupid stubbornness.

Goodbye 2022

English is pretty much our best player right now and doesn’t need to have a non-ruck 5 game player as his wingman

Bevo just doesn’t rate the ruck, never has never will, that’s fine when you can exploit 3rd man up , but those days are long gone. Teams exploit Bevo’s stubborn blindness.

Counting down the days to a new coach now.

Still mystified by the 5m off the mark bullshit. Just releases pressure on the kicker.
I had to laugh at how many times we would just run past the bloke with the football and release all pressure whatsoever so we can man 5m in front of him. The ****ing football is not going there anyway, when we get it they’re right in our face to hold up our run but no when they get it we try so ****ing hard to run away from them. It’s bloody laughable to be completely honest

New and fresh ideas are needed. We can’t keep trying to win games purely based on our midfield winning contested ball and flicking quick hands. Our kicking inside 50 is disgusting and we cough up such easy goals meanwhile our goals are a complete and utter nightmare to find.

Maybe we can ask our two assistant coaches who have played a total of 56 AFL games to help with the selection side of the team and fresh ideas :)

A similar situation to us. Minimal around him.
Also a motivator.

Coaches around him:
Murray Davis (no idea who that is).
Mark stone (didn’t play afl)
Ben Hudson
Cam Bruce
Jed adock
Mitch Hahn

Lets look at Melbourne then, and also note their coach took less money in his new contract to make sure he kept his assistants

Adem Yze
Midfield Coach

Layer 1
Troy Chaplin
Backline Coach

Greg Stafford
Forward Coach

Mark Williams
Head of Development

The ease at which Geelong was able to slice through our 'defences' when kicking out and then methodically go past the wing without us laying even a glove was infuriating. But happens regularly to us so should have expected it.
