We paid our players a fixed rate below the average (in the 1927-1930 side it was 3 quid a match, less than most VFA sides let alone VFL). Men wanted to play for Collingwood because it was a great club despite the money. Occasionally blokes left for coin, like Minogue or Todd or Fothergill, but they often came back. We famously beat South's foreign legion twice, a team cobbled together with coin.
But you knew that.
Now if you're talking about bought premierships, you should ask Platten, Buckenara, Dunstall, Judge, Pritchard, Hudson, Eade, et. To be fair the Carlton side at that time was even more mercenary, but you made up for it with some brilliant zone players. Yep, the great 1983-1991 team was built on money and VFL assistance.

The salary cap was brought in because North and later Hawthorn and Carlton made the VFL entirely about money and two clubs ended up going to the wall. Thanks again, can you just not shit in the pool anymore?
When it was just about football, when men could play anywhere they wanted, and teams won or lost on their merits, we were the best. Many of the rules changes (when they weren't trying to de-uglify something Hawthorn had done) were to give crap clubs like Hawthorn a helping hand. You're the "difficult children" of the Big League, hopeless without help, making messes, and so entitled about what you have been given.

You were founded in 1914, we had a 12 year head start, or 18 if we count from VFL entry. Subtract 12 or 18 years from Collingwood's flag tally and we still have more flags than you (including VFA or not).

Hawthorn has done well to stop embarrassing themselves. the pity of their recent hard earned success is these newbie supporter who feel like they own the joint.
