Surely the answer is Neser at 7, with Carey at 6. Hardie and Sutherland are promising, but Neser averages 30 in FC cricket in the last 3 years as well as being in Australia's best half-dozen seamers. Bowls at the stumps, too, which is handy on low pitches.

I’m really struggling to see how we didn’t take Neser, let alone play him in this test. Id be throwing him on the next plane ffs

Two front line spinners seems ridiculous not playing to our strengths

Head would literally have done no worse than Renshaw. FMD

I understood the Handscomb selection because he’s a very good player of spin. Renshaw bats from the same side as head, is probably not as handy at part time spin, and doesn’t have the ability to pile up runs quickly, which is invaluable on a tough pitch. Really don’t understand why he was picked in this spot.

To be fair, pretty much everyone is shithouse in India. It’s a unique challenge given that most of the other top countries are dominated by pace bowling, and the Indian players are unsurprisingly excellent in familiar home conditions. There’s a reason that almost nobody wins in India unless the Indian team is especially weak, which it rarely is.

Did some on here think Australia was going to go to India and continue winning as we did at home?

The last test series in India was actually very competitive, and India’s side hasn’t changed a whole lot since then. There was good reason to hope that Aus would give them a good run in this series although the first day of play is certainly not promising.

There was no basis to think we would be half competitive… We have one opener that should have been retired 12 months ago and can’t score a run now even if it’s a road on most occasions,a no name hopeless middle order now head got dropped out, a test debutant who bowls the same as lyon who isn’t a match winner and we pick 4 bowlers….

India should declare tonight and they would be home with their feet up having won by stumps tomorrow night.

The no name hopeless middle order that you’re referring to - presumably Renshaw and Handscomb - played every match in the last test series in India, the one that Australia very nearly won. And Australia played that entire series with a similar attack, two quicks and two spinners, and then the occasional over from Mitch Marsh or Glenn Maxwell.

Everyone seems determined to ruin a potentially epic series.

The Indian curators, the Australian selectors the main culprits thus far (not that I blame the curators for most of our wickets today tbf).

Just produce fair pitches and let's enjoy the game for that it is. The last series Down Under against India was fantastic. More of that and less dick measuring BS please.
