Anyone know whether this is Test Crickets grand final or not?
A completely fair question. I've found myself seeing this as an Ashes appetiser. I didn't even realise it was on tonight.

I still reckon it needs to be tournament style to make it meaningful. Test cricket doesn't lend itself very well to a tourney, but if you set aside 3 months and held it in just one country (or region), the final would carry more weight.

It's a fairly common convention to shorten Mohammed no? Md. Mohd etc.

Pujara's name is the same length as Marnus give or take and it's spelt in full.

I don't think it's a slight?
Never seen Mohammed shorten before. Could be the case as Cummdog is listed as Pat

One thing I don't really understand are the naming conventions with South Asian players.

I know it's different from country to country but for example:

Why do we say or used to say Sharma in Aus when he's more commonly referred to as Rohit in India?

Maybe you can help my ignorant asss THE A5 ?

I’m not extactly sure what you mean. Do you mean the name on the back of players jerseys? I kinda think that the ICC needs to be stricter and make it last names only.

Part of the issue is the variety of cultural traditions within the countries. For example, some Bangladeshis have only one name, some have two but they're both given names, some have a family name. Caste, ethnicity and religion all play a part.

In the case of some South Asian players being known locally by given, rather than family name, I suspect the family name is a caste name and thus, insufficient identifier for an individual.

This is a bit old and far from comprehensive, but a good resource nonetheless:

Cheers T, this is more what I was getting at.

It seemed like everyone started referring to Sharma as Rohit overnight and found it confusing.

I remembered a mate explaining something like this vis-a-vis Sikh names and wondered if it was similar.
