So, South Africa have been scheduled to play a test series in the middle of their SA20 comp (domestic T20 comp part owned by the IPL)

As a result, this is the test squad they are taking to New Zealand.

South Africa Test squad: Neil Brand (capt), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin, Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, Khaya Zondo

The captain will be making his test debut.

Might as well just cancel the series. It also shows the status of Test cricket in certain countries is worryingly low.

I’d be pissed if I were NZ and now surely the ICC has to step in an say enough is enough.

This where cricket is beginning to head towards in my opinion and is starting to follow the path that soccer is already well and truly on. IPL clubs are buying up franchises in other leagues (SA20, UAE, USA, WI etc.) and their ability to keep doing this will allow them to offer 12 month contracts to players to play T20 across the globe. This will then see players foregoing central contracts with their country (particularly outside the "big three" (Australia, England, India)) which will see them earn more money than what they would with a central contract. It may be a case of IPL franchises only allowing players to be released for global tournaments (World Cups, etc.) in the foreseeable future, similar to how soccer is at the present time.

Test cricket is on the wane/stagnating outside of the "big three" and such countries are resorting to T20 to maintain a steady flow of income as there is little money to be made in test cricket. This is why we are seeing countries outside of Australia, England and India playing two-test series or "one-off matches" against each other as test cricket doesn't generate the interest, crowds or revenue it once did.

Given that playing test cricket pays very well for the "big three", this will be less of an issue for these countries in the short-term future but medium-term this will be an issue that all cricket boards will face unless the ICC does something drastic to alter the course.

T20 cricket has, for the most part, changed the cricketing landscape and is something that can no longer be ignored. It is the form of game that can be used to market the sport to non-cricket markets (e.g. USA) given its shorter duration and potentially given the sport much more exposure and increase its global presence along with its ability to make money. Being included in the 2028 Olympics will help with that and will be sure to pique the interest of various nations, particularly the USA as the host and with such a large population given it is a mostly untapped market (ambitious though, mind you).

Also the brand is averaging less that 40 in fc cricket

Seven players in that squad have played test cricket, with the most experienced being Olivier with 15 tests and he hasn't played test cricket in more than year. The 'keeper averages a touch over 27 in first-class cricket which is low for a keeper at that level and highlights how

AUSTRALIA just beat INDIA in the 2nd one-dayer - just. It was an exciting finish, and we go 2 up. Well done
ladies!
Is this similar to the womens ashes where the tests odis and t20's where results of all contribute to the overall winner of the series?
We lost the test but won two odis - is there a few more games to come?

This tour is 3 seperate series for each format.

I missed game two but the first one was entertaining. I thought it might have got away from them when India flicked the switch late in their first innings and scored at will despite being a few down. I'm guessing they bat quite deep?

People can blame SA if they want but the blame should lie with Australia, England and India. Tests involving none of them lose money, so of course organisations like Cricket SA who are broke aren't going to be prioritising tests, and players from those nations will obviously choose franchise cricket over red ball when only 1 pays decent money. The big 3 make enough money to be able to help other nations keep playing test cricket but they couldn't give a stuff

I wouldn't be surprised if the same thing starts to happen here in time.

Not for Tests, but I could see players opting to play BBL/Franchise T20 instead of white ball internationals. The talk already is that Warner will not make himself available for the West Indies white ball series in Feb as he has committed to a T20 league somewhere.

I'd much rather watch a full strength BBL (with proper internationals, and our national players) instead of a 3 match ODI/T20I series.

White ball internationals still make money though, so I'd be surprised if they go anywhere.

We're playing ODIs and T20s in England next September ffs

The BBLs problem is you can only have 2 of the following 3.
  • Best Australian players involved
  • Played during school holidays
  • Tests remaining where they are in the calendar
Will be interesting to see whether the bottom one stays untouchable as test cricket diminishes

Cricket regardless as a sport has to make some real tough decisions going forward to keep the game relevant. ODI cricket can go tbh. Outside the WC it’s quite irrelevant for most countries outside India. Another thing they could do is capping international T20’s and having a WC every 4-5 years instead.

Not sure how Rob would come up with side. Has boland and morris who have been around the sqaud but no Cam Green. I’m getting the sense he is going with the vision of the hypothetical of having a t20 comp like the Saffas but in that Case both openers, Davis, Morris and Nesser would be playing the t20’s.

Sounds dumb, but what about a T20 or 50 over WC annually? Means there are less meaningless bilaterals years away from the major tournament

The T20 WC is every 2nd year so there's 3 WCs every 4 years as is, plus the ICC are trying to bring the Champions Trophy back for that fourth year too.

The only redeeming feature of one dayers is their world cup is fantastic. T20 needs to make theirs once every 4 years and aim to get the prestige on the same level. That will probably spell the end of 50 over cricket. It's too long to work for a casual viewer and doesn't have the intrigue of a test.

Based on crowd numbers, you could easily piss off the early December test and have a clean intro to BBL.
