Hardwick is not going to be as big as James.

If Sicily continues at 2017 levels, he'll be everything we wanted from a big fish.

Respectfully disagree. Hardwick is going to be an absolute A-grader. He has in composure and decision making what Sicily has in dynamism.

I see no reason why Hardwick, Burton and Sicily can't be the next Hodge, Mitchell and Burgoyne. All 3 will be just as important as the other.

If you call what Guerra was A grade, then yes. But I don't see him totally dominating games like Sicily already has now.

Given that Clarkson has publicly ruled out Hawthorn looking to trade for Stringer, that looks doubtful Roddy.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hawthorn did discretely enquire of Stringer's manager, but was told either (a) Stringer's list of preferred clubs does not include Hawthorn and/or (b) Stringer's preferred salary is higher than what Hawthorn would be prepared to pay (which ultimately comes to the same thing).
Clarkson didn't rule it out though.

"We were pretty active last year ... on the back of that it's probably more difficult for us to be really active players," Clarkson said of his club's trade prospects on the Nine's Footy Classified.

"Certainly in terms of a guy like Stringer it probably excludes us."

"We like him as a footballer and think he'd be really handy for our footy club, but in terms of how we could possibly get that done, and meet the needs of the Western Bulldogs, we're probably fairly constrained."

Guerra doesn't go down in 2012 and I feel that grand final potentially goes very differently. Don't undersell the ability of players who are ultra-consistent - they don't make the plays of the week highlight reels but they are the absolute backbone of any good side. Hardwick was a massive reason for our mid-season recovery this year.

yeah injuries to Hodge Goo and Swiss in 2012 hurt our chances big time, along with guys like Poppy and Rough being spent come the GF getting us there

even with all of that if we'd kicked straight or Swans had been a little more wayward.....

The swans reached up their arses so far that day, they are yet to truly recover.

Reading between the lines... Hawthorn are up to their beak in it.

I would doubt very highly that they just sit back and let Geelong play the market without attempting to push up the asking price at least.

The rhetoric of "Clarkson says we won't be busy this trade period" from his comments is perplexing.

There was even this quote in the AGE stating "In fact, Clarkson admits his club won't be doing much at all during the league's annual player trade period in October" yet Clarkson never once said this.

AFL media is shithouse.

HFC sitting on its hands during a trade period? Very unlikely and unheard of during Clarko's reign.

On the other hand HFC did fire a lot of shots last trade period and may just make a few small shrewd list adjustments this time around.

Above equals no idea really whats in store.

We are quite restricted with available assets to trade this time round. However, the feelers are certainly still out; a review has taken place, and players have been enquired about. We just have to wait and see what will happen.

Are we restricted because players don't want to be traded out?

I ask this because I believe we have a number of players that are solid performers who have played in multiple premierships, experienced an A+ culture, are likely to play good footy for 3 to 4 years. These players could use their experience to improve other clubs, these players very valuable assets, if they were open to being traded.

I'd love us to go for Stringer. I know his form wasn't as good this year, but his entire team's for wasn't as good. And there's obviously been something going on behind closed doors that has been affecting him. A new start at a club like ours would do him the world of good.

I can imagine a conversation something like this...

Clarko: "Hey, Bevo. I hear you're trading out Stringer. What do you think, mate? Will he fit in at Hawthorn?"

Bevo: "Yeah, no."

Clarko: "Cheers. Will he fit in at Geelong?"

Bevo: "No, yeah."

This pretty much sums up your post...

Starting to go cold on lever, don't think we would be chasing him we need a midfielder first. he plays a very similar role as sicily, with frawley and possibly stratton back in our defence next yr. I Can't see us playing frawley, brand, sic, lever, stratton.
Let's throw our eggs at gaff!
