It's because he is the current whipping boy, as Hill was to a lesser extent before him. Once he leaves he will become a Superstar :). I think we have seen Gaffs ceiling and it is pretty good, I don’t think we have seen Billy’s and he is still a solid contributor that would fit into a lot of sides best 22.

I agree, we definitely haven't seen his ceiling. I'm not sure he'll be a superstar for the same reason that we haven't seen it; but when he was drafted, all of the weaknesses that Hawks supporters complain about were his strengths in the under age comp. He took the game on, he was a penetrating and accurate kick and a good tackler for an outside player.

If he can get that confidence back he'll be great, and it would suck to see it happen at another club.

Ok I am going to let you all know how it runs.

If we want an A grade player (Gaff Stringer etc) we need to offer an A Grade player or a first round pick.

Here is the list of A Grade players on our list.

Gunston
Breust
Rioli
Mitchell
Omeara

One more top season with age profile etc you could possibly add Burton and Sicily to that list.

If we were to trade one of the above Bigfooty would crash.

Schoey Billy Langers Shiels Birch etc etc all packaged up together doesn't get you an A Grade player nor does Stratto or Frawley.

The only chance we have of landing Gaff is if we give up a first round pick or one of the above players.

Those that think offering Wet Toast anything less than a A Grade player or a first round pick are living in fantasy land.

Things have changed.

We can get Gaff for nothing next year.

One year of Gaff isn't worth anywhere near that much.

We got a first round compensation pick for buddy, which fell directly after our first pick. We finished 2nd that year so it was circa pick 18. Had we have finisher last that year, it would have been pick 2.

People are suggesting an end of first round compensation for gaff which is the second rung of compensation and must fall at the end of the round aka pick 19. Gaff would definitely earn WC this compensation at the very least.
We finished 2nd ?

Don’t tell anyone else that. Everyone thinks that was the start of our 3peat.

You’re assuming he wants to come to us above all else, rather than just go to Victoria in general.

We never give up our proven future talent, Gaffs value would be similar to Mitchell if we were to orchestrate a trade. We are in a position where we desperately need to trade out our aging stars, we currently have 10 players over 28, compare that to the 2 GF sides who have 4. We have plenty of chips to stack up

But we don't have the bargaining chips you are referring too.

Ask any club what Stratton would be worth in a trade and they would say pick 30+.

Ask anyone what a running HBF like Birch is worth and they would say pick 30 at this stage of his career.

See this is the problem on BF we over value our own by a country mile because we watch them week in week out and we love them.

Frawley at very best for a club that is really keen on finding a stopper who is heading towards 30 and showing signs of wear and tear would possibly get you a pick around 25 at very best.

These ageing warriors are not bargaining chips to get A Grade talent into our club unfortunately.

A Grade talent coming in means either A grade talent going out or a a first round draft pick.

Chris Dawes went for pick 20, Sharrod Wellingham went for 18. The point here is that if a club wants a player like Birch or Stratton, they will pay what they need to pay to get them.

Seeing as you don't know what each club is willing to pay, you're speculating just as much as us but apparently different because you're being a 'realist'.

Regardless, 26 year old + players can be recruited for nothing trade wise in the right circumstances now, which brings down the value of all players in that age range.

My understanding is Gaff, though open to a move to Melbourne, isn't instigating a trade with West Coast; moreover, he isn't putting a gun to anyone's head and telling people he wants to go to this club.

If a player is moving from his current club to a new club, would he want to be coached by Alan Richardson or by Alastair Clarkson? Not a deciding factor, but I would think a fairly important one.

Eagles would likely get a 1st rounder in free agency compo in 12 months, so I can't see us getting this done this year.

This assumes that free agency remains the same, and also assumes that Gaff stays healthy for 12 months.

Given Gaff's injury history I'd be pretty confident about the latter.

Gaff does an ACL in the first round and misses 12 months, or - worse still - does it in round 22, 2018 which means he is out until round 1, 2020. These types of injuries are unpredictable but could drastically affect the list of suitors for Gaff.

If I were the list manager of the Eagles and it was made clear to me that Gaff was less likely to stay than go when his contract is up, I would be listening pretty carefully to trade offers and balancing that against what might be awarded to the Eagles should he leave as a free agent, weighing up these risks as well as the potential for the AFL to dilute compensation (in terms of draft picks) given to clubs which lose free agents.

Chris Dawes and Sharrod Wellingham..... I rest my case your honour.

I wonder if they are going to cop the same criticism we did about "destroying the culture of the club" when they boot out Menzel and Motlop so they can bring in Gary and Stringer... I doubt it.

A bit like how no-one has mentioned their brutal treatment of numerous club legends over the years harshly but always as smart list management. We do it to two players and are monsters.

Come on now you're both coming off a bit precious here. Hundreds of opinions in this game, not hard to find one you don't like if you want to feel outraged.

The journos who wrote that JOM directly cost us Mitchell and Lewis weren't 'out to get us', they were just lazy idiots.

He might be only a little fish but is it likely that Jack Trengrove will be picked up or maybe he will rookie listed by Melbourne..

Hartung + Future 2nd for Gaff is whats being discussed. Realistically Hartung + pick 15-25 is more around the mark. Gaff is a top end running midfielder, he wont be cheap.

On the face of it it looks like we are ripping WCE a new one, but that is deceptive.
The future 2nd being variable has a chance to make the whole thing under's for Gaff, they will be banking on us finishing in a similar position as this year...

Hartung is young and has upside, they are interested and a 20 something pick has value.
They are looking to regenerate their list and start a new generation at the Eagles and Hartung would become a piece of that puzzle. Gaff is almost in no mans land in terms of age being 25; probably wont be there for the next flag push.

My personal belief is it wont happen, it MIGHT but Im just doubtful about Eagles willingness to accept what we will offer.

We'd probably pay a fair whack of Hartung's contract for that first bit which might help

WCE nowhere near a flag, but had almost the oldest list going into 2017. Very few if any talented kids coming through, almost time for a rebuild. They need players in Billy's bracket, played 50+ games and on the verge.

Still don't see them swapping Billy for Gaff

Would imagine their age demographic will drop significantly with Mitch, Priddis and Petrie retiring
