End of 1st next year (pick 19)

Or hartung in the door now, clear gaff's salary, get our future 2nd (~27), is almost equal value
I think you're overestimating the compo level. That's what we got for Buddy on a $9m contract.

The AFL really doesn't want to give compo, and I think their secret formula will deliver less this year and less again next year until it's phased out completely

Ok I am going to let you all know how it runs.

If we want an A grade player (Gaff Stringer etc) we need to offer an A Grade player or a first round pick.

Here is the list of A Grade players on our list.

Gunston
Breust
Rioli
Mitchell
Omeara

One more top season with age profile etc you could possibly add Burton and Sicily to that list.

If we were to trade one of the above Bigfooty would crash.

Schoey Billy Langers Shiels Birch etc etc all packaged up together doesn't get you an A Grade player nor does Stratto or Frawley.

The only chance we have of landing Gaff is if we give up a first round pick or one of the above players.

Those that think offering Wet Toast anything less than a A Grade player or a first round pick are living in fantasy land.

We get deals done. We find out where we can leverage our assets for value and use that value to get what we want. I think even if we get gaff we will still have a first round pick next year.

Sorry mate, but it's not the only way at all.

There's value in salary cap space, which has been outlined here previously by Holy Rioli in the snippet he got via GWS about their requirement in recruiting players who will have most of their contract paid by their old club.

Trade period is going to be very interesting.

We never give up our proven future talent, Gaffs value would be similar to Mitchell if we were to orchestrate a trade. We are in a position where we desperately need to trade out our aging stars, we currently have 10 players over 28, compare that to the 2 GF sides who have 4. We have plenty of chips to stack up

Hartung is a player WCE are courting and we want end of second for him! So, what's wrong with Hartung plus future second?? For Gaff, if he wants to be a Hawk.

This is 100% right.

There’s a huge amount of value in the fact we have good trading relationships with other clubs. O’Meara for example wouldn’t be on our list if SoS wasn’t aware that we generally help others out. Or the Tigers last year where we accidentally added a third year to Vickery’s contract so they’d get a better compo pick. You build up favours they come back around. We probably owe the Swans one for accepting 14 for Mitchell for example, while Freo owe us a bit for taking unders for B Hill. Players respect this as well. I remember talking to Bucky at a club thing a few years back where he said the Hawks had talked to Burgers well before trade week and encouraged him to get traded to us - so much so he burned his bridges at Port (which we didn’t want him to do). Then Jolly came on the market and we could have much easier got a deal done with the Swans for a more pressing need in the ruck, but felt we should honour our commitment to Burgers. Billy Longer is another one who we moved heaven and earth to find a place for after McEvoy became available at that point.

The Cats are another club who are good to trade with. Sure we may not have heaps of leverage in terms of assets, but in terms of salary cap etc we’re very well placed.

We got a first round compensation pick for buddy, which fell directly after our first pick. We finished 2nd that year so it was circa pick 18. Had we have finisher last that year, it would have been pick 2.

People are suggesting an end of first round compensation for gaff which is the second rung of compensation and must fall at the end of the round aka pick 19. Gaff would definitely earn WC this compensation at the very least.

So the question is, would the Eagles prefer just a second round compo pick in 2018, or would they prefer an established but still developing player that will fill the role of Gaff in 2018 (clearly not as good), as well as a second round pick. I think it's a bit of a no brainer to be honest, I don't understand why people can't see this. Even if the Saints offered one of their firsts this year (they are unlikely to offer more), I think our deal would still be much better for the Eagles. By all accounts a second next year (due to the depth of the draft) will probably be close to a first this year anyway and they have already shown interest in Billy.

What do you mean 'at the very least'? You think they'd be likely to get compo that's even better than pick 19?

Everyone talking about Gaff for Hartung and an early second being highway robbery - I must be the only person that can see Hartung finding his consistency and being one of the dominant wingmen. His tank is close to Scully's and if he learned to push himself, he would be on that level. I understand that it might be better for us and him if Hartung goes, but he has a great knack for finding the pill which is something you can't learn - all it will take is some confidence in his run and he could be a legitimate game breaker. He's only young!

Some of his running goals and bursts have been outstanding, if he can do that more often it'll be a steal for WCE.

It's because he is the current whipping boy, as Hill was to a lesser extent before him. Once he leaves he will become a Superstar :). I think we have seen Gaffs ceiling and it is pretty good, I don’t think we have seen Billy’s and he is still a solid contributor that would fit into a lot of sides best 22.
