Bio:
After starring for Coburg during this year, Luke Ryan has quickly become one of the best mature age prospects in the country. After a 2015 campaign for the Calder Cannons, Ryan tried out for Essendon VFL and after being rejected eventually joined Coburg two weeks before the season. Ryan didn't take too long to make his presence felt as he forced his way into the VFL senior side and earnt best on ground honors on debut against Hawthorns affiliate club, Box Hill. Fast forward to the end of the season and he has a handful of accolades including a Fothergill-Round medal and a spot in the VFL team of the year in a back pocket. Luke Ryan is a classy defender who can intercept the football and use the ball well from defensive 50.

Why did the Swans take him?
Luke Ryan just fits needs and could be that crucial cog to their next great team. Right now the Swans midfield has a big hole to fill with Tom Mitchell defecting and a player that could fill that role is potentially Callum Mills. After starring off half back all year, Cal might be ready to slip into that midfield and Ryan may allow that to happen as he can just step straight into that lineup to play Callum Mills' role in 2016.

Who else did I consider?
Obviously I bid on Harry Perryman and believed he might play a similar role to Perryman if given the chance. Others I considered are Gallucci and Rotham who both are prestigious talents but don't fill the needs of the swans as well as Ryan.

The selection of English is an interesting one. Most Suns supporters are against the idea given the players you've mentioned, our pressing need for midfielders, plus the fact we are likely to add young man-mountain Brayden Crossley from our Academy next year who will probably be AFL ready before English. However there are a growing minority of those who seem to think we'll take the WA ruckman. I think the only reason we'd select English is if he was seen as clearly the best available. Clayton regularly seems to reach with his later picks. Personally I think Scrimshaw would be taken if still available at our pick as Clayton is apparently very keen on him.
I believe their is a low go home factor with English which at the moment would weigh well with the Suns He comes from WA country and boarded at a Perth private school in 2015 which was a part reason why he missed the draft last year. He has already acclimatised to being away from home and coped very well so life on the Gold Coast would not be as traumatic as it has been for some of the princesses that the Suns have drafted in prior years.

Order has been updated for Perryman matched bid.

# 20 GWS - Harry Perryman / NSW / 184cm / 75kg

Pretty happy to get Harry this late as rate him a lot higher. He reads the game really well and presents as a kid with really good footy IQ but he isn't an outside player alone. Shown that he can mix it up on the inside and be relied upon to win his own footy. He is clean in traffic and makes terrific decisions.

The real stand out for me with this kid is because i simply love his composure with the ball. The best players are always those with time to make good decisions and can calm a side under pressure down and turn the momentum. Harry has done that plenty of times but there was a game at the champs (think Metro) where the Allies were getting slaughtered early and he got sent back and immediately calmed them down, intercepted the attack, repelled with really good decisions and ball use and suddenly they were back in the game. Was only a snippet but it showed the type of player he is.

Sure he doesn't have great pace but I can name a lot of players who dont but have great composure, time and elite ball use which more than make up for it. He is also going to have to build his tank which means he will start more as a HB but GWS have done wonders for a number of players in this area and they will back themselves in to do the same with Harry.

foj1 over to you with # 21

Quigley doing a superb job for us, Ainsworth, Florent so far, i hope messrs Schwab, Conole and co are taking notes.

I am a fan of the contributors to our phantom draft but if our recruiters are watching and taking notes they have their processes all wrong.

Disagree. 2 mates of mine were coaching a feeder team to the Northern Knights and went to the U18 carnival games. Mick Malhouse had noticed them talking to a couple of the young lads and came up to ask them about the boys. Inquired about a bunch of things and was genuinely interested.

I think you under-estimate the amount of time and passion that some of the posters have with the game. The recruiters are active but cannot see every PSA game, every TAC/Colts game, know the family, etc. Yes there is a load of recycled gumf on the boards but there are also posters who have invested and have insights. Up to you to know the difference.

It would not shock me if the Lions took a punt on him at 21 or 22 in the real thing.
If rumours are to be believed, he won't last past the Bulldogs pick 26 (pre bidding)

There have been BF posters that have become recruiters, but I am sure that recruiters don't look at BF for information.

It would not surprise me if recruiters had a read. I am sure they would get a bit of a laugh out of some write-ups. It is always possible though that that something might get mentioned that would be worth following up for them. If you are recruiting full time you would have time to get information from all available sources and BF would be a source albeit one you might not rate very highly.

Dalrymple in an interview a couple of years ago suggested that the recruiting team checks phantoms etc towards the end of the year, after most of the work has been done, as a way to make sure they haven't missed anybody obscure. Didn't elaborate on which phantoms though.

The first round is complete and here is a look at the changes in the players value between our trial phantom draft and the real deal.

Bolters:
Hayward - With a strong finish to the season, he has come from undrafted to moving into the first round. There are some stories floating around that the Eagles may be interested in Hayward, so we could see this kid go even higher on draft night. The real question is can he move into the midfield?

Logue - Rowing his way into the first round moving up 21 places, some great senior WAFL performances has seen him come into contention for a first round selection come draft day. Is he a defender or is he midfielder? That will be the interesting question long term.

Florent - In the trial draft, I was really considering him instead of Battle at the time and Florent showed why he should be considered in the first round at the end of the TAC season. Had an amazing finals series and injuries gave him the opportunity to show his ability. Watch this kid on draft night.

Sam Powell-Pepper - Just like the way he plays football, he has charged his way into the first round. This big boy has plenty of AFL qualities and certainly has the body to play AFL.

Taranto - I was a huge fan in the under 18's but you typically worry about their ability to move into the midfield when they've shown half forward flank abilities. Well he certainly can play midfield and looks every bit a first round selection. #nobias

Slider: The real sliders will show up in the later rounds, but some early sliders are starting to appear.

Todd Marshall - Just did not set the world on fire with regards to his ability as a forward. Does not get enough of the ball and assert his dominance to make you lock him into your top 5. There is plenty of projection to what he may become with regards to his ability as a forward. Boyd/Patton dominated under 18's and they've taken a long time to show their ability and some would say are still yet to prove themselves. If you select Marshall, you will have to wait five years before you can start to form a judgement.

1 Essendon - Andrew McGrath Up 5
2 GWS - Hugh McCluggage Up 2
3 Brisbane Lions - Ben Ainsworth Up 2
4 Gold Coast - Sam Petrevski-Seton Down 2
5 Carlton - Tim Taranto Up 12
6 Gold Coast - Will Brodie Down 5
7 GWS - Will Setterfield Up 4
8 Gold Coast Suns - Jack Bowes Equal
9 Fremantle - Jarrod Berry Up 15
10 Sydney Swans - Griffin Logue Up 21
11 Gold Coast - Tim English Up 1
12 North Melbourne - Jack Scrimshaw Up 4
13 West Coast - Sam Powell-Pepper Up 14
14 Adelaide - Daniel Venables Down 7
15 Port Adelaide - Todd Marshall Down 12
16 Brisbane Lions - Oliver Florent Up 17
17 Port Adelaide - Jy Simpkin Up 5
18 Western Bulldogs - Will Hayward *Bolter was undrafted*

Pick 22 - Brisbane - Shai Bolton

Brisbane need to revitalise their midfield and add some pace and flair and there is no-one who does that better in this draft than Bolton. I would like to see him impact games more consistently but if he can improve that area he could become a star. Not sure about the go home factor with him but given I don't know I am willing to take a risk.

FWIW I am having trouble pasting in my write ups. Anyone know what is going on and how to fix it?

Yer like Hayward, was hoping he'd be the sort to get through unoticed as some of games I saw him play for North Adelaide were truly exceptional. Big x factor type, if he can be more consistent will be quite the enigma.
