And that we don’t play Richmond until Sunday the week after meaning an extra 9 days…hard to fault the reasoning.
Hard to fault? He's missed 9 weeks with a simple strain as the club tells us. Even our mid season pickup needed a rest (managed) after a week of training with us. What is going on?

Yeap, no need to push this time of the year, smart strategy to control his return

I'd be happy if the club transitioned him back over the next 4 weeks

Repeat hammys..... The grading becomes irrelevant. They all take max timeframe. You only get '3 lives' with hamstrings. Caution all the way. As you've been told before in this thread.

Cerra still a week away. That's turned into a pretty serious hammy, when we thought it was rather minor.

When you have 5 in less than 2 years it’s always serious.
I’d like him to get some miles in a reserves game at a higher intensity than training blocks but less intensity than an AFL game.

With Cerra it is just probably a case of the team being ultra cautious. Probably Vossy asking them, will Cerra stand up and the team not really knowing or being able to guarantee anything. So outcome is, let's wait another week and we can all agree it's Cerra's body's fault.

With Martin, the team will be like 'i have NFI', lets just play him and see.

It's probably a good job to hold actually where you get paid for having NFI.

They’d want these guys to last through to the GF this time - no rocks unturned to add their value for the long term - as best they can.

Sad that hamstring injuries may derail Cerra's career and hurt our midfield.

If they think he needs another week and our next game is 9 days after Geelong, then the reasoning to leave him out makes complete sense for someone prone to tearing hammies. Even a ****** can understand this.

Given the collection of injuries has subsided you need to suffer the frustration. You just cant have all your lollies now. You have to show restraint.

Agree on the minor scale comms bit but that's the prerogative of our club to mislead other clubs...

I mean personally, i really want the Cerra lolly out on the field this weekend, but it is simply out of stock.

Cerra needs to go away from footy for the rest of the year and do a complete biomechanical overhaul of his running and kicking style IMO. his repeat injuries are part of his game at this point.

I'm not an expert (or even particulary well informed) on biomechanics but I think a couple of things are visible in his movement. Below is a highlights package but you can ses some things there:

Most obviously, I think his stance is too upright with his legs straight too often. When tired (in particular) this has some flow-on effects:
- second highlight: When he bends to pick up the ball he tends to do so with straight-ish legs and bends his back over = stretched hamstring, often when going at full intensity = eek
Last highlight = a bad handball, but his upright stance means that he moves his body first to react, then twists to follow it = strain on the lower back = eek
General running patterns = I can't really describe it but again he seems to carry his hands low and stance high, which means his back is 'upright' when running. At full pace I would assume his muscles are stretched at full capacity. He also seems to tend to run in slightly curved lines, almost like a gyroscope. This gives nice balance when kicking (he rocks into kicks) but presumably also means a bti more stretching than is necessary.

Compare that to Sam Walsh who is roughly the same age, speed, plays a similar type of role, etc:

Contrast particularly the middle section where in a series of highlights Walsh picks it up off the ground = lower stance, knees bent, much less bend in the back. He is then also able to burst more quickly when in possession, whereas Cerra tends to pick up and handball.
In general play, you can also see that Walsh almost always moves his feet first, with a low stance. When tackling or the ball is unpredictable he widens his feet first, then changes direction with his feet before staying down low to move forward.

Walsh has had his share of injuries but its typically been off-season and seems to be back/overtraining. Cerra, on the other hand has injured himself in games, and very late in games too. This season he had 24 and 21 disposals already in the matches he was injured. Last year it was 17 and 20. In 2022 it was 30 and 30 (and then 2 in the match he came back and reinjured himself). I think that suggests a technique issue that gets worse when tired (obviously).

TLDR: I think Cerra is too upright, this stretches his lower back and hamstrings more, particularly when he is tired, and no amount of fitness blocks or whatever can fix this. He'll keep injuring himself unless he changes his stance and posture.

That's a very laypersons analysis though, and if there's experts out there who think otherwise I'd love to be corrected...

What are you hearing Sky?
Anthing to worry about
No just that I've seen it in elite sport around me as I've played. Guys having to take a serious amount of time off after a string of hamstrings, work on running technique, bowling actions and specific strength regimes until they're ready to come back. - yes I was cricket but hamstring is hamstring. Think of Cummo and his back. Had to go ghost for a while and learn a new technique

The likes of Motlop and Marchbank will press for selection after playing the last couple of VFL matches.

I'm worried that Marchbank will press for selection and break his thumb...

We don’t play Richmond until Sunday the week after meaning an extra 9 days...

We play Richmond 9 days after Geelong and then GWS 6 days after that.

So after Geelong it's really a 15-day break :p

He has even worse luck - press his thumb and somehow give himself concussion

Reminds me of an old joke.

Irishman: Doc, I think I am dying
Doc: Why do you think you're dying?
Irishman: It hurts everywhere!
Doc: Everywhere??? Show me where it hurts
Irishman: pokes all over his body.... it hurts here, here, here, here, here, here and here
Doc: Ah.... You're not dying. You just have a broken finger!
