Reminds me of an old joke.

Irishman: Doc, I think I am dying
Doc: Why do you think you're dying?
Irishman: It hurts everywhere!
Doc: Everywhere??? Show me where it hurts
Irishman: pokes all over his body.... it hurts here, here, here, here, here, here and here
Doc: Ah.... You're not dying. You just have a broken finger!
Is that Duffy getting advise from Sam on his knee injury?

If Martin isn’t available until round 18, I don’t know where that leaves him for the rest of the season. Personally, I’d like to see him play at least 2-3 weeks in the VFL to show he won’t immediately break down again before he’s even considered for the senior side, but that timeframe takes us close to finals without senior football.

If he isn’t back in the side prior to finals, he won’t play unless there’s an injury. I’d be shocked if they brought someone back cold for week 1, particularly when losing likely means heading north for a prelim should we get that far.

With Cowan and Kemp now settled in the backline, and with the re-jig of Williams and Cinc. The form of Williams, Owies and Fog as midget forwards playing in synch it won't be worth disrupting that. If Martin is fit and we still want to pursue this role that Orazio is playing than Martin would be a good fit (but then there's Cotters).

I say we just have to make the hard call on Martin, Marchbank and keep them on the sidelines and fresh in case of need, as sad as it is deep down even they both probably know a fresh start elsewhere or suburban footy is something to consider.

Career has to be hanging in the balance

Unacceptable availability

100% agree. It’s simply not fair to ask the coaches to plan for success when one player of importance cannot get on the field year after year after year. We’ve mitigated the risk to a large degree for this season by signing Elijah and seeing him emerge as a player of some substance, and we will have SOS back next year who can add to our stocks playing this sort of role such is his versatility. I suspect we’ll test the market for a someone who can play that role (obviously we have already asked the question of Hardwick and Hayward). If we do re-sign Martin I expect it’ll be for one year on minimum chips. If another club is happy to offer him a better deal - I think only the Saints would be stupid enough to do that - then all power to them.

I reckon you can add Cunners to that list too.

After the VFL game today, our 'rehab' group were out there on the track. Managed to get a few snaps before security came over and tell us to politely **** orfff. Martin, Doc, Cez, Cotters, M Carroll, Duff and HO'K.

They were just doing some warm up laps but all seemed to be moving freely....even Doc 😍
No sign of JSOS.

I gotta say though that Duffy has got the weirdest jogging gait I've ever seen....he kind of bounces along. Having said that, when you see him at full tilt in the highlights package, he's got some wheels. Got a bit of size about him as well.

This is ...wow. Didn't expect another month and then what? Straight back in at a critical time? We need team cohesion most of all.
So frustrating!

Interesting re JSOS. It almost feels like Doc is ahead of JSOS in his recovery. Probably though it "helps" with Doc's experience in managing such a treacherous injury.

Jack Martin waltzes back into the team.

Automatic selection when fit.

Has proven he doesn't need to come back via VFL.

I'll be putting a $50 on him for Norm Smith too.

I think Martin is gone now. If I had to retain 1 of 3, it would be Marchbank.

His availability is similar to Cunners but think Cunners will be easier to replace.
Martin is the only one who offers an upgrade on the current Best 23.

Marchbank is a push with Kemp.

Cunners is about equal to the fringe bunch of 10 or so pushing for the 3-4 small forward spots.

+1

Key defenders don't grow on trees. Happy for him to stay as injury cover for Weiters on a rookie spot if he can stay healthy.

Marchbank has proven over many years that he can't stay healthy. Is closer to the end of his career than the start. Played just 14 games in the last 3 years.

If we are going to have an extended premiership tilt we can't be clogging our list with players who live on the long-term injury list.

Martin, Marchbank and Cunningham need to go.

We also can't have an extended premiership tilt without an insurance policy for our most important player.

I would rather have Marchy in that role over Young or S. Durdin. However, I won't be complaining too much if Austin goes in a different direction.

Depth can be as much about quality as availability. No Marchbank means we are relying on Lewis Young types in the event of an injury….swings and roundabouts.

Cunners, Marchbank and Martin all good players on their day. But they've never been great or consistent even after a few games run at it. All enigmas and I'll take consistant output and physiologically built for the sport for our depth players which those 3 have to be considered now.

Agree, with limited list spots you should aim for 100 game B grade players over 13 game A graders.

You could argue our list build is optimised to carry 1-2 unfortunately talents, on the hope your consistent players get you to the grand final but historically we have had far, far too many, even if part of it was an intentional effort to buy high risk, high reward players

We had Rhino (O'Sullivan), who was a perfect example of this view.
