Nic Newman 2 year deal
Hopefully with a solid defensive plan he can regain some of his form from the last couple of years - some silly errors had crept into his game (but then again, same could be said about the whole defence at times)

Media have hammered the Blues over the last couple of months. Pretty much crickets from them regarding the Magpies lately…. hardly heard a peep (except from Eddie of course)

Let’s have a look at a comparison:
* Please note: this is done off the top of my head so there may be some omissions. Feel free to add anything.

Carlton
  • Mid season: Announce a football department review to be conducted
  • Review handed in two weeks prior to seasons end
  • Coach not happy. Teague makes it clear in the last couple of weeks he thinks he’s been hard done by
  • End of season: Teague sacked on Wednesday after last game.
  • Club announces committee of six to interview prospective coaches, including CEO
  • Sayers calls Ross Lyon and says he’ll have to be part of the process
  • Lyon pulls out
  • Two weeks later Sayers sacks Liddle/CEO
  • Prospective coaches Pyke, Lyon, Clarkson and Brad Scott all approached. So far Lyon and Clarkson have publicly declined. Scott takes job at AFL
Collingwood
  • Early in season media reports some players have grown tired of Nathan Buckley and are still upset at how Adam Trelour was treated.
  • Mid season: Buckley resigns. Club says it is mutual. Media speculation was that Buckley pre-empted the inevitable, knowing he wouldn’t be coaching in 2022
  • Collingwood put committee together to interview prospective coaches
  • Korda and Murphy in ugly public spat over the presidency
  • Korda appointed new president and then immediately challenged by Geoff Browne as well as other Magpie heavy hitters including Galbaly etc. They publicly put the blame on Korda for salary cap fiasco.
  • Threats of EGM from supporters. Infighting between supporters/Browne’s group and current board about collecting and hanging over signatures, addresses etc. Messy as hell
  • Meanwhile media have reported that Pyke, Scott and Clarkson have all said they’re not interested in the coaching position. All declined citing a variety of reasons. Lyon has publicly declined
  • Korda announces that he will step down after only 1 year.
  • Controversial board member Bridie O’donnel resigns from the Collingwood board after only four months.
Media:

Carlton: wack! wack! wack! wack! wack! wack!
Collingwood: yawn…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Just saying.

Having Don Pyke as coach with Gia as assistant is an absolutely smashing result for the footy club, in fact I would argue that it's better than just having Clarkson by himself surrounded by budget assitants (due to SC restraints)

And factor in the likely arrival of Brian Cook and it feels like Everything is coming up Milhouse !!!

Exciting times ahead Baggers

I'm still not 100% sold on the guy. Towards the end of the season he seemed to take over Doch's "quarterback" role of setting up plays, so he got (i.e. received) a ton of the ball. But I think quality is more important than quantity.

Who will be your choice of coach tomorrow Elmer!

Possible but hard to see - he is an integral part of a young GF team that should be in contention for multiple years. He and him family are from Melbourne, and despite his brother at Freo, i'm not sure the attraction, unless Freo are going to offer huge overs $, which i see as unlikely with his concussion history. He's come through with the core of the team, his position is locked in and he probably has a strong bond with a young playing group that may well win a flag next week. Why would he leave?

I agree with pretty much all you wrote, but watch this space. They’ve analysed Cerra as being a point of difference that could improve them further.

Remember also they were belting good teams without Viney for a fair chunk of the year too. Not to say Viney’s leaving.

Sportsbet have closed their market for Blues coach, but Ladbrokes is still active with Pyke favourite at $2.75.

What does it all mean? Anyone ITK?

BTW, Andy Maher has drifted to $51, so could be some value there.

PS: Gamble responsibly.
it means Sportsbet have gone to lunch.................Ladbrokes brought sandwiches

I think you spelt Jeff incorrectly but otherwise OK. :p :thumbsu:

Yeah, happy to put my hand up.

It's okay to admit when one is wrong (although granted I seem to get more things wrong than right these days). I was a bit influenced by some of the negative Crows fans said about him on their board, but I think it was SkyhorseTamer who told me I shouldn't listen to them, they are nuffies and after reading their shocking views on the Tex Walker incident, I think ST was right all along.

Was going back and watching some Crows replays whilst Pyke was coaching them and his game plan and tactics seem to me perfect for our club and our list, defintley a lot more defensively sounded than Teague's without throwing out Teague's attacking philosophy either.

And yes, also a bag fan of Gia, he will be a senior coach one day, his footy IQ is reported to be off the charts, and I think he would be a tremendous asset, even in an assitant capacity.

Feels like if this (hopefully) happens,.we are setting the foundations for cultural change and more professional performances from the players at our club.

All the cook rumours and all it was, was the club cooking noodles in a microwave

I am pleased we re-signed Newman, no star but he does his role pretty well I think, and yeah sometimes some of his kicking and decision making is frustrating, bur he does offer protection for our lighter weight kids and I think for the time being still has a spot in our best 22
.

Spot on!

I was saying this to a couple of mates just the other day,
Why is it as soon as it seems someone turns us down or something not going in favour of the club BAM front page news?
The Filth essentially sacked ("parted mutual ways") their coach mid season where as we waited for season to end yet we are a rabble with our process how we treated Teague etc. Yet these same muppets were the one's saying he had to go.
I still don't understand why we are hated so much in the media when we have been basically irrelevant for the past 20 years and not been a premiership threat.
So just once I would love for everything we have set out to do through a proper process come to fruition and lead us to 17 to stick it right up all the so called "journalists" that hate us.
