Which aspect of his game has multiple clubs showing interest?

Low salary makes boom or bust a cheap gamble. High draft pick signifies potential. VFL best and fairest signifies that he's not that far off the level when the team he plays at has a reputation midfield (we're not the best mid unit but enough big names to give a "aww poor Paddy" perception).

He's not the centrepiece of a team's trade period. However, if he improves even 5-10% on his game over the summer (in line with his age) could easily be deemed a starter for rebuilding teams.

Come at me. I’d ring Hawthorn and look to trade Dow and a future pick for Tom Mitchell. He is an accumulator week in week out, doesn’t take a week off. We need that experience still. Releases Walsh and Cerra wider. Hawks would welcome Dow I reckon.

What about Howe they delisted. No little about him. Come at me twice if ya want. Open season on the wooly one.
Howe is the bloke that got 2 weeks for punching Cripps and 3 weeks for tripping and breaking Fishers leg in the same game. And is a terrible player who has just been delisted by the Hawks who have a terrible list. Cannot emphasise how big a no that would be.

Mitchell is a no for mine. Plenty of disposals but no impact. Waste of salary cap space and trade capital on someone who wouldn't be in our starting midfield. Also think that he is probably on the downward curve if his career.

I’d ask for a 1st round pick. Jordan Clark left geelong for freo for what was equivalent to a first round pick. Couldn’t get games because they were a top 4 defence in the comp at the time. Well, dow couldn’t break into a top 2 midfield in the comp this year and is contracted so if they can’t give us what geelong got for Clark then we’d be more than happy to keep him.

I can just see the reactions to when Austin asks for a first round pick for Dow..

Initially, total bewilderment..

Then, there will be confusion.. 'is he for real, or is this just a piss take'..

At that point, they will think it's a joke..

No for me too then. Just saw the name, thought I’d ask, now I know. Appreciate. I try not to watch Hawks play. Wee and Poo makes me want to………….well, wee and poo………..from my mouth.

Yes agree , Mitchell would be a reasonable addition , mature bodied ,a skilled accumulator, stifles opposition break away form center, releases our young guns to be more damaging and from being pummeled, perhaps Cripps too , will be to help more often in our forward line.

It's just not worth trading dow or setters. At best they bring in a 3rd rounder. It be almost 99% certain that their output will be greater than a 3rd rounder.

Both are very good depth options. If they'll both stay on minimum chips and be depth that's great. Both players only getting better but setters end to the season was elite.

Agree but the big if is the reduced pay for Setters (Dow has a contract & $’s forthcoming).
Longer tenure & more dollars will be the tempter.

Forget the multiple clubs, it comes back to what's on offer and, has nothing to do with my post

Clubs may think they can change him as a player, but he will have the same struggles at any other club
What it indicates is other (foolish?) football organizations value Dow far more than we do.
It will all be vindicated in another season or 2, by Carlton or more than likely somewhere else.
Personally I'd trade out Setters and Kennedy before him. Not that they're lousy footballers, but we need faster on-ball reflex's and decision makers and one of them would have decent trade value.

Dow doesn't have faster reflexes, and his decision making and execution is poor

Multiple clubs being interested, isn't an indication of value

I'm confident he'll be forging a midfield career for some AFL team in the future.
One of us will have to re-visit this conversation in 4-5 years time. :)

Agreed but if we could clear Setters and Dow off the books i dont see why we couldnt entertain bowes (give suns a future 2nd) and with the dow & setters picks plus our jones compo, upgrade them into say brisbanes pick... and head to the draft with 7 10 and 15, which is 'hitting the draft'

In a perfect world, that would be a great outcome.

Just have to hope guys like Cripps, Charlie etc don't get salty that they took unders in order to keep the team together, then we go ahead and bring in a guy on as much, if not more $$$ than they're on who hasn't shown anywhere near it yet...

What’s even more interesting re the Dow situation is that he is by all accounts happy and wants to stay at Carlton.

It's not that bad in the Magoos. Pie and a Hot Dog after the game.

Stay around and watch the Ones play. Enjoy a few beers in the shed.

I don’t think you need to be worried about it as I think it’s pretty clear from the recent press that we won’t be going for Bowes. A good call by the club IMO.

Once we sign H and TDK long term the core that will drive our push for a flag will be in place. From there on in it’s all about finding niche role players to fit in the cap.

Imagine yourself as a Carlton player drafted in Dow's position.

You've seen a number of your mates persisted with, given "final" opportunities or outright delisted before being rookie listed. Every time the club does this the player's career is revitalised. The kick up the backside has worked, the additional hard work they've put into doing what the club demands pays dividends.

At the same time you have seen just as many - perhaps even more - depart the club. Some of them given supposedly better opportunities elsewhere. None of them have yet to make the club regret it's decision including the latest one to do this, SPS.

IF you were contracted and saw both of these scenarios being played out simultaneously you'd want to stay too.

It's clearly a case of the player wanting the club more than the club wanting the player and it's very easy to see why.

That's not to say we won't eventually get stung by delisting the wrong player but it hasn't happened recently.

I'd let fisher kick him in the shins every training session for the first month.

After that, I reckon he's a decent pickup.

Not sure Austin is as bold or creative with trades as SOS was...
Seems to pick his targets, focus on them and pay what's required...

As much as I would love/want Pick 7 (Phillipou)... Oh and Bowes...
Think there is no chance Austin takes a risk, so I'd say there is 0% chance we are a player...

Yeah I agree. Was just entertaining the scenario for the sake of it.
