Not happy with the setters trade. Showed in the last fortnight he could step up as required unlike Dow. We have lysfranc Kennedy, 2 years in a row hewett back, no durability cunners, green Caroll, makeshift mid doc, developing cerra.... hopefully we don't get injuries to Cripps or walsh

I don't see the point in keeping depth players in case of injury. I kind of feel like we have seen the best of Setters. I'd rather punt on a diamond in the rough who could be anything at this point. Who dares wins.

I feel the same about Dow and LOB too. Sort of ho hum, more of the same.

I'ts been dull and stagnant 2022 trading period, whilst opposition teams have improved their lists some markedly, fairly obvious and frustrating.

1) I don't think we needed to trade in a whole bunch of players in order to improve next year.

2) Acres is not a sexy pickup, but he very clearly addresses arguably our biggest weakness. So we weren't stagnant.

Exactly. Teams like Geelong and Collingwood need to trade in ready made players as their lists are so reliant on players at or past their peak. We have so much more scope for upside from existing players as almost every key player is still on an upward trajectory.

Well he went for 3 and a future 1st likely outside the top 10, and part of that paid for downgrading 1 to 2. As pick 1 a year ago, it's a good price but it's hardly the same as punting 2 first rounders on a likely top 5 player. The starting point is different.

I wouldn't pay pick 10 and a future pick on Sheezel. I'm half expecting him to fizzle at AFL level. A slower Rankine perhaps.
Agreed, but I think clubs sometimes back themselves when the see an opportunity to add premium talent if they think it is worth it.

Port Adelaide trading up from Pick 11 to get Rozee was a very smart move, for example.

I’m not sure if Sheezal is at that level, but trading up to get him is a similar idea. When the majority of your squad is built - or at least most of the important players are on the list and entering their prime - you can start drilling down on positional needs.

Currently we lack some creativity and X-factor in our front half and are relying on our midfield for forward 50 entries. We need another quality half forward who’s going to consistently play. Martin and Cuningham are constantly injured, Fogarty isn’t very good. We have a decent crumbing forward in Motlop, another potentially good small forward in Durdin but they should be played deep. Too often they had to come too far up the ground, but they did show they had some skills and look like they belong at the level.

Owies should really be depth, Fisher still hasn’t settled in a position, but we know he can play as a small half forward or on a wing to a reasonable level.

I think the club would sense an opportunity with Sheezal if they were able to find away to trade up. A lot will be based on how much North want you retain Pick 3 and take Sheezal themselves, which would also be a very good option for them.

I think Dow (should we retain him) will start to shine if we give him more than 1 consecutive game.

Does trading that F4th in now give us the ability to trade our F1st without the AFL saying "no"? We may be able to use F1st to upgrade this years first or trade say, for Sydney's first 2 1st rounders this year.... something like that??
That is my understanning, we couldn’t trade F1 when we traded our F3 for Acres, but can again now as we have ‘replaced’ that pick with another F4.

Could see Austin splitting our F1 to jump up from Pick 10 (say with Geelong) for Pick 7 and a late F1. Reminiscent of the SOS Stocker trade …

F4 doesn't replace F3. We would need to trade it up, or get an exemption to trade F1 (without something coming back F1-3).

Left field idea, but with the Melbourne/Collingwood impasse on Grundy, would anyone be prepared to offer pick 9 for Grundy and 16, on the basis Geelong is prepared to trade pick 7 for TDK?

Not advocating it, but it gives us ruck certainty now and two first round kids for the future. Pies still to pay $300k of Grundy's wage means we should be able to carry the balance with TDK moving out (and Setters who was on pretty good $). All other pieces of our list are already signed...

I have no desire to move on TDK but IF we got Grundy, he'd become redundant.

Unfortunately, we cant afford Grundy. And people here dont like it very much when you mention trading TDK, they get all upset about it.

Unfortunately his body of work over the last four seasons has been massively underwhelming. Two good games at the end of four season, doesn't make up for it. That people are losing their minds over him is quite amusing.

A fire of mine reckons re Setters ..,

flake - never convinced me - no grunt - need blokes who will bleed.........* making out like he's leigh matthews...........

:)

Yep. Plus, I am a bit tired of all these years we have gone "bEsT tRaDe PeRiOd EVA!!", and then missed the finals. Again.

Maybe a bit of mid-October disappointment and frustration might spur us to do something on the field, instead...

Basically we should be striving to be the opposite of *...

Those two games he was given more time in his natural position. Funny how his form spiked in those two games though right. Shows that if given the opportunity to play in the correct spot he will be enormous value for Essendon. He’s exactly what they need.

He was down the pecking order with us, fair enough we can’t hang onto everyone. But that’s a big hit to our immediate depth should we have another mare of a year to injury. Whilst he never set the world on fire on the wing he at least could be relied upon to play multiple positions.

We really need Philp, Carroll, Cuningham, and Kemp to step up. The club is putting huge faith in these guys.

Agree Blake Acers will be a soild pickup, astute choice and at a very fair cost. Hopefully trade night will hold a surprise or two.
In Austin we trust, football skill and IQ above all else, hopefully.

Not in the best 22..
Uncontracted.
Essendon offering more than us.

How do you suggest 'hard ball' would look?
