I'm hearing from a very reliable sauce that Billy Slater is coming out of retirement and joining us in a playing coach role. Apparently only half his salary will be going in the salary cap

I tried your sauce, and it is weak

How is he a dickhead though? He's super competitive, he's a player opposition fans love to hate because he's talented and a match winner, he likes to get in the face of the opposition, he's got an air of arrogance about him, he likes to hurt people, he's a good footballer. To be honest he sounds a lot like a lot of our beloved premiership players of the past, loads of teams win flags with players that have his personality and many suggest you need it to do so. We lack that.

When we rock up and start playing poorly, the effort is down, the spark is not there and we are going through the motions like we did against Adelaide, Collingwood (the forwards round 23), Gold Coast etc etc you need someone to create a spark and start the fire. We don't have that, especially up forward where it is needed.

I couldn't give a pigs arse about whether we are liked or our players are liked or winning any virtue signalling BS competition. We're a football club and winning games and premierships is what matters and what I care about. If he helps do that then he's a good fit for us.

I actually hope we go to the draft and target a forward with these qualities and personality. In my experience arrogant unlikeable blokes, you don't go very far without them, you need them.

Probably the biggest lingering impact of the Fevola incident(s)

Club has gone out of it's way to avoid extroverted, outspoken types.

Trouble is it's relied upon in successful outfits.

Totally agree with all of your post

Charged with assault at a restaurant. Multiple striking suspensions and pushing an umpire. You don't have to convince me, I like him as a player. The club has been steering clear of these types for over 10 years though.

Hahahah Toby Greene! I love this place

He’s almost 28 - I doubt we will ever get anything out of him than we don’t already get. The annoying thing is 1 big year from him could win us a flag which probably means we’ll keep going down the same path, hoping..
Agree with you Martin is a sublime talent, an extraordinary footballer.
Sadly his good form rarely lasts for more half a game at a time, keep our fingers crossed that season 2023 being more stable & professional environment will give us the benefits of having, Martin , Williams, Gov on the list, hopefully Cuners and Marchy can remain on the park for a while too.
The improvement we really need is just plain luck, talent is overflowing.

Been a successful policy that. Heaps of silverware as a result.

That's because we have gone young and to rebuild the culture with so many young and impressionable types we have had to avoid them. The core club culture still needs to be a professional culture where everyone behaves on and off the field and is professional with their training, recovery, playing and all round discipline.

That's fine however there are personality traits that for whatever reason are linked to required onfield traits you can't do without. We all know this, we have all seen bucket loads of highly talented players who are mostly match winning forwards go through the system over the years, win premierships and be hated for their arrogance, onfield and off field digressions and for being outspoken and in your face on the field.

Part of the rebuild is solidifying that core culture at the club and that's pretty much done now our playing list and leadership group is mature.

The next part is finishing that off and that means finding these talented types and being a club which can accommodate them.

We haven't been a club which has been able to accommodate those sorts but surely we are now?

For some reason those s**t blokes come with something special on the field and you can't do without that if you want that premiership cup. I don't know what it is but it's a trait that makes a person extra competitive, a louder voice on the field, more confident and more willing to take risks than others. It's exactly what we need in our forward line.

If we were to move higher up the order in this year’s draft it would involve Bailey . . .

but it would be this one:

well a relative maybe!

How far up do you think we need to go?

My feeling is that we need to pick ahead of the Suns and/or Saints in order to have a crack at Humphrey. One of him or Phillipou will be there if we jump the Saints (pick 8), but if we climb above both (pick 5) we could have our first choice. At this stage I prefer Humphrey, but I would be happy with either.

This move will cost a fair bit of draft capital. Is a future 2nd enough to move from 10 into the top 5?

Done some things off the field. Like a lot of multiple premiership players in the past have done. Perhaps he's at a club that does not accommodate him well. These types do need to be at a strong club that can reign them in and keep their discipline where it needs to be.

Given the opportunity, teams like Richmond and Geelong over the years would recruit him no questions asked. Those clubs can accommodate those things and those sorts of people, they back themselves in to do so and we need to do the same, show some faith in our club, it's culture and it's leaders.

Great overhead mark is a stretch IMO.
He's an admirable player but he's rather limited overall.
He's the only player on our list that our supporters trip over themselves to create a role for.

Your last line sums it up perfectly IMO. He's always been a limited player from day 1 for us. I do not think he's in the best 22 moving forward in 2023.

You make some excellent points gb.

We have built a strong core of mature solid citizens in our team like Cripps, Doc, Wieters, Walshy, Saad etc and would be able to easily keep a player like Toby in line. Our coaching group is also well equipped.

Seem to recall a team who were able to manage a brilliant (slightly dickhead-ish) type of player called Akermanis who did okay.

Huh. How much silverware has Greene won then?

Of our Best 22 for 2023, roughly 12 members will be trade ins from other teams.

Not sure how this compares to other teams but the number seems fairly high. We have very few best 22 team members that have been actually drafted post 2016.

For me, the drafting record of Brodie and Agresta is dismal and a fairly big cause for concern going forward. Good trading is masking what a poor drafting performance it has been over time.

I'm very happy with the work Austin has done, but this part of the club ought to have been freshened up a little bit. I'm disappointed it hasn't been, seems so obvious.

Good point. Cerra is a good example. If we'd have taken him instead of Dow in 2017 we wouldn't have lost our first round pick last year (and taken Gibcus / Amiss / etc.). So trading had to step in and cover for a mistake by the recruiters.

Likewise to get Kemp, Stocker and Philp we gave up the Lachie Ash pick (looks a good young mid at GWS). Not giving up on Philp / Kemp but all 3 look closer to misses than hits at this point. Georgiadis and Sam Dekoning were the 2 picks after Kemp.

Pretty sure we never had a play on Ash...didn't we trade 11?

Don't mind it - I'm sure the AFL spent most of the afternoon contemplating giving us absolutely nothing.

Reasonable symmetry to it too, considering we spent pick 46 on him in the 2014 trade period.

(Dogs used that pick to draft Caleb Daniel, which I find vaguely annoying...)

If the planet was properly aligned Caleb Daniel would be on St Kilda’s list………………………….
