He refers to the game in 2005, where we beat Brisbane at the GABBA for the first time in ages, as the turning point for the modern bulldogs.

I agree with him, that it was the first time that the Dogs' now-infamous running game came of age and begun to win us games.

I think the more important aspect of the article was his admission he was hanging out in Dalrymple's office. Is he looking for a job in recruiting post playing career? It was almost a job application.

Was that the game where Cooney tore it apart in the middle in the last quarter?

no that was the game at the dome, this game was at the gabba, a week after we beat the crows? but lost Darcy during that game and where given no hope of winning at the gabba, we were like $12-1 after the game Smorgan put his Gold card on the bar :D

it was also my first game i went 2 at the Gabba:D

From memory, Mitch Hahn might have rammed a couple home in the second half to get us out to a handy lead.

I also remember thinking that the only thing that stood between us and victory was a bit of Aker magic. Wish we'd had him back then...

Also recall listening to Paul Dimattina waxing lyrical on the radio (ABC Qld) after the game.

Very significant win, that one.

...and it was the week after Darc did his knee at Geelong.
I recall Rocket saying he'd told the players why they could win at the Gabba without the Big Russian, and the players responded to it.

After the Gabba win The Hun printed an article about how the Dogs beat Brisbane in their own backyard.

Rocket apparently told our ruckman (I think it was Wade Skipper, remember him?), "If you match up on Keating, just run, run, run, because he will not run with you". It was this sort of tactical thinking that Rocket brought to the Dogs players, and that was the first night it really paid off.

Great article.

Bob Murphy articles on a Thursday are back - it must be footy season! As good as summer is, it doesn't give us these enjoyable week-to-week routines. Not long before the weather gets cold and we'll be right into the spirit of it.

The ruck star of that game was one Will Minson and in the return clash where Cooney got huge recognition for his part in the 9 goal final quarter Big Will basically hit every centre bounce ruck contest straight to Coons.

The real star uncovered in Brisbane was not given much credit, but it was the move of Brian Harris onto Jonathon Brown just before 3/4 time that had a lot to do with the victory.

Brown threatened to take the game apart as he started to get the better of Chris Grant, but I think he was denied another touch by the then Harris. Was sign of things to come and Brian has basically had Brown's number ever since.

You're thinking of two different games here (both against Brisbane in 2005). The Minson/Cooney domination and 9 goal last quarter was round 18 (Johnno's 250) while the Harris onto Brown move occurred in round 7.

Perhaps you should re-read my post.

I did say the Minson Cooney last quarter was the return clash - meaning round 18 at the Dome.
Minson was however own main ruckman at the Gabba and played well.
