Wouldn't surprise me if he was moving that well on the Tuesday before the qualifying final

I think we'll play him
All depends on whether he can turn.
Up against a pretty agile opponent.
A needle or 2 he might be ok.

Fitness test 4:30pm on the Gabba turf 45mins before the bounce.
Reminds me of 2009 when Simon black, Bradshaw and one other had to do running drills to prove their fitness before an elimination final against Carlton.
Nigel Lappin's ribs... Jono Brown's knee... Jack Payne entering elite company.

As long as it’s not by the doctor who jabbed fev before his 200th!

As you say agile opponent so it can’t be treatment that ‘deadens’ him too much

Even though Tuesday is the main training session Payne has often been on light duties early then proper training Thursday so i guess that’s the real test?

Harris sounded pretty evasive, jaspa more positive:

Do we take the risk with him on Saturday, knowing he may blow up and not be right for a Grand Final should we make it?

I'd be inclined to think it's a risk worth taking... neither Collingwood or GWS have enormous forward lines compared to Carlton with McKay included.
Usually I would say yes, but given how much he has struggled in the second half of the year (now we all know why), it is a big risk expecting him to come in and take the Coleman medallist with a bung foot.

Not really ideal whichever way you look at it unfortunately, but I think I’d err and go the “fitter player” option (just).

b4 game - drinks, either the Pineapple, or the Aussie National, or Morrison hotel
Food - the Morrison might be your best bet?

the other option for food& drinks is the Brewhouse across from the hospital. Would be a good choice for after the game as well.

After the game - stones cnr hotel.

Good plan, don’t tell him about the German club, keep that for the locals

If we win the Cup this year it will be so good if Lester/Zorks/Gardiner get the medal.

It will be sad if Dan McStay isn't up on the podium.

These blokes were there in the crap years.

I wonder who has played in the most number of losing games?

Won’t be that sad if McStay isn’t on the podium, at least he’ll get to watch his mates get their medals and think what could’ve been

Lion crowned VFL's best in 2023, three-way VFLW tie
Congratulations Jarryd Lyons! Love to see his consistency rewarded. He should be the SUB again this week.

Following up from that. Certainly doesn’t fill me with much confidence that he’ll be there on Saturday.

If he’s jogging like that, then the ankle should be fine and he plays. If the ankle was bad enough to keep him from playing, he wouldn’t be doing any running at all, so early in the week. A good sign is he continued the light jog after starting.

He’s carried it for many games already, including the QF, and that hasn’t kept him out. Expect no different for the most important game of the year.

If Payne gets up I would play him on McKay who relies less on his athleticism than Curnow and play Andrews against the deepest forward/resting ruck. Lester can push up the ground more vs. De Koning or Curnow if he leaves the 50.

Be the worst of timing if Payne was to miss. He hasn't been quite himself in the latter parts of the season, so you would think it has given him some grief. That said, even at 75% I think he needs to play.

Gardiner has been a great servant for our club over the years and if selected will battle manfully. But, not having played at league level for some period - does have me worried. He also has a few free kicks against him in every game as well.

My biggest concern with Gardiner is the free kicks he give away especially against the bigger opponents.
Payney does some silly stuff sometimes which gives some cheapies away but I can’t remember him giving too many free kicks away??

It's hard not to get ahead of myself here. I see us having Carlton covered pretty well. Coming off a break is always a worry but I think they are definitely walking wounded into this clash. Outside of Payne we are fairly injury free and I think Payne gets up for this one anyway.

I feel like after a 8 seasons of the finals bye the week off for qualifying winners should be well accounted for by now. teams should know now what they need to do eg: whether it be a intraclub match for 1 hour with no tackling etc. Geelong thrived off it last year and Melbourne the year before.
