Keen to see how this experiment works out.

When was the last time a club had 2x Top 5 league ruckman? Cox and Naitanui?
Mind you in the peak of their powers at the same time.

* slightly past their peaks, but still close enough vs a young stud/experienced over the hill veteran combo.

Surely a healthy McDonald straightens you up and brings out that 4-5% improvement out of the other forwards.

Sure, he isn’t a Hawkins/Lynch/Walker, but he is capable of being a point of difference in making it function better if he stays on the park.
yeah, maybe a few %. But he got injured yet again during the week and couldn't play in the vfl grand final so mentally I've written him off.

Did Collingwood offer him such a shit deal in fear of losing him? Did they not realise he will be on 1M plus after hes 30? Hes a gun, no doubt, at the time he was worth 1M per season, but not for the length he got, maybe 2, then look at it again. Kane Cornes is right about these long deals, got very good opinions about it.

we're not in the flag window without a key forward. it doesn't matter who we bring in, or what changes we make to the game plan, we're not going anywhere with this forward line.
Collingwood were 1 point from a GF. You think they have quality key forwards ?

You think Buddy plays like a traditional key forward ?

The game has never been less dependent on key forwards.

Would I like one ? Of course.

Can we improvise a match-winning score without a top notch key forward if were gelling across the field ? Absolutely.

They have Mihocek who is head and shoulders better than Ben Brown.

Buddy is a key forward yes. They also have Sam Reid. Both are so much better than Ben Brown.

I don't believe we can win a flag without bringing in a good key forward. Because Ben Brown and Tom Mcdonald are super slow they offer nothing defensively either. It's just one big giant mess.

Ben Brown is almost a liability if he doesn't mark it.

Mihocek is a solid player. He's kicked 40 goals once in his career.

Sam Reid's 18 goals this year were a Godsend. Invaluable. Certainly better than Ben Brown's 30.

You'll forgive me for totally disregarding what you ''believe''.

I don't blindly trust. Yes they returned us to the top 4 but Goodwin also took us backwards this year. He also didn't get the best out of this list in 2019 or 2020. So I'll give credit when it's due but Goodwin was disgraceful this year.
If only you were in charge man…..

wait, pump the breaks. are you suggesting that Ben Brown is better than Sam Reid? Surely not. Surely...

When was the last time a club had 2x Top 5 league ruckman? Cox and Naitanui?

There's a 9 year age gap between those two. When Naitanui made his debut as a 19 year old in 2009 Cox was just shy of his 28th birthday. We had a 2 year period 2011/12 with both of them as an elite ruck duo then Naitanui got injured in 2013 and Cox retired in 2014. Part of the reason it was such a devastating combo is that they are very different players and Naitanui is a burst athlete who can't ruck solo anyway.

There's only a 3 year gap between Gawn (31 this year) and Grundy (28). I don't know how much footy Gawn has left in him but it's banking on 5 years of footy from Grundy from age 29 to 33 which for the price is a gamble in its own right. It would/will be interesting to see how the combo goes given both players have made careers out of being #1 rucks. Grundy at his peak was getting 1,000 hitouts with a minor chop out from Cox or Jordan Roughead. Gawn is a great marking target but they don't kick a goal a game between them.

yep, which is never. I maintain that there are about 100-150 country footballers that are better than Ben Brown.

Ben Brown WAS a pretty good full forward but thats in the past, very good on the lead and kick for goal. The CHF role does not suit him at all and thats on Goodwin playing him. He has a bad knee injury going back years that still continues. Fritsch and Brown inside 50 is also not a good fit.
Lets see how quick van Rooyen can come on, ? mark on McDonalds injuries and Petty looks dangerous up forward but are the other key defenders good enough to replace him.

Goodwin is so overrated its not funny.
2021 no injuries and full fitness.
This year the team did not run games out and he played injured players who did not perform and also played players out of position.
Hunt is slow off the mark deep inside defensive 50 but super quick further up the field. Salem was injured and came back looking slow as.
Brown at CHF with McDonald injured was so costly. They have too many similar types in the midfield and need to bring in some speed, more pressure (which was a feature in 2021) and fix the forward line.
The list has a couple of flaws but is overall great, no excuses next season.

Wait, pump the brakes...

Are you suggesting that Sam Reid is a good key forward with 17 goals ? WTF

And no, Brown is shouse.
Sam Reid is a very important cog in Sydneys team. You can keep spitting goal numbers at me but the guy is decent. Not amazing, but decent. I've never seen him drop marks like Brown, or do blind turns only to get caught holding the ball like Brown or get outbodied and outmarked like Brown. Brown probably results in 3-4 opposition goals due to the scoring chain starting from his own direct man.

There was no excuses this year. Just a very rigid coach who insisted on bombing it long and high to some spud tall forwards in Jackson and Ben Brown.

Definitely agree that we need speed. But I'd imagine that we'll only pick key forward in the upcoming draft so I can't see where the speedy mids are coming from.

Would all be different if you were at the helm man, global peace and world hunger would be resolved as well!

Maybe it was just your 'drink your own bathwater' year ala Tigers'18 and you've a couple more premierships in you?
Either way, I'm not sure Grundy is the answer but happy to get that contract off the books....

I wonder if Grundy could average 11 disposals, 4 marks, 7 hitouts and 1 goal per game.

Tough ask.
