Bulldogs revert to (almost) 1954 jumper

Having said that, now jumpers are tighter, I think the next trend in the AFL will be to have jumpers with short sleeves similar to the NRL and soccer jersey.

These translate better as 'social' wear for supporters (ie. you can wear them out socially unlike the sleeveless AFL 'vest') and would mean more merchandising revenue for the clubs.

Will never happen.

1. The AFL jumpers are one of the most traditional and unique jumpers of any sport around the world something the AFL would be proud of.

2. The sleeves have been tested in the past by Hawthorn and got negative feedback with the players switching back to there original jumpers half way through the game.

3. They already sell jumpers with sleeves at AFL stores and they aren't very popular.

Typo of the year.

Excellent for the doggies. The jumper is much better but for me the most important part about it is that the fans rallied together and signed petitions etc and the club actually took notice.

I hate the white, too insipid

Definitely. Too many teams use it anyway.

Don't know what the Dogs would gain by switching back to Footscray. It isn't a nationally recognisable suburb like Carlton or St Kilda and isn't backed with success like Collingwood or Essendon.

Also, presumably the posters here saying the Dogs should revert to Footscray and embrace their past aren't the same ones who think North should have moved to the Gold Coast.

The dogs aren't going to miss out on league guaranteed premierships by not keeping 'Western'. It's hardly the same thing.

Both are cases of making a major change to your identity (as opposed to switching your collar from white to black) to alter appeal.

In any case what you insinuate is we were wrong not to go because of possible future success, while most who say we should've moved say so because of financial reasons.

Love the simple iconic designs. Not sure if anyone mentioned this but it is weird to have a team in a national comp with the word 'Western' in their name when five other teams are west of them.

Sort of, I more meant it as a result of serious financial assistance/draft picks.

And I'm not insinuating you were wrong not to go. Just that the difference between what you would have got compared to what the bulldogs will get (or not get) is a huge.

Not to mention that a new team with "Western" in its name is entering the comp, and will enjoy much broader exposure than the Dogs courtesy of the AFL.

Footscray itself is hardly what it was 15 years ago, anyway. At least as far as I can recall.

Only thing that would make the guernsey better is the red sleeves, but whatever.

Apologies. Maybe wasn't clear earlier on.

My point is people are saying the Dogs should revert to Footscray (tradition) without consideration of the broader financial and marketing consequences, even though they are no powerhouse. It's likely those same people would say North to GC blah blah blah on the basis of finance and marketing without any consideration of tradition.

I just think it's hard to reconcile those two views.

No worries, fair enough.

Take a look at some of the walking billboards that are NRL jumpers, ans then think how lucky we are to have teams still wearing their traditional jumpers and not a giant Vodafone jumper or anything.

You think that's bad? Canterbury donned an Avatar themed jersey last year to celebrate the release of the film on DVD and Blu-ray
