Re: Burgoyne Deal Done

Im not saying the draft is weak beyond pick 15/20 and above because melb have picks inside then but, its a fact this is a shallow draft.

Besides Talia, Panos, Butcher, Carlisle and Black their arnt many Key Position Forward prospects which is vital for so many clubs.

This draft is dominated by midfielders which is what Essendon needs in my opinion.

Your backline is set for the future with Hurley, Hooker and Pears

But now you have given up pick 16 where you could have snagged Cunnington, Rohan or Stevens but instead you got Mark Williams who is clearly past his best and is very inconsistent.

I seriously believe Willams will struggle without two power forwards bringing the ball to ground and he will be heavily targeted by defenders because you dont have many threats in your forward line with the retirements of Lucas and Lloyd.

Essendon:
Lose: 16, 42, Nash
Gain: Williams, 24, 33

Geelong:
Lose: 33
Gain: 40, 42, 56

Hawthorn:
Lose: 9, Williams
Gain: Burgoyne

Port Adelaide:
Lose: Burgoyne, 40, 56
Gain: 9, 16

Essendon does very well out of that.

Geelong gets a fair deal

Essendon does ok on paper although if Lovett fires and Williams doesn't they might regret giving up 16.

On paper I say Hawks lose but who knows Burgoyne could help them win a flag and Williams is coverable considering Franklin Roughead and Rioli.

On paper Port's pig headed trading tactics appear to reward them. They've got 2 first rounders for a 26 year old and only lost a third rounder and a fourth.

We had 17, 33, 49, 65.

So we traded Mumford for 28 and gave up 49 for Drum.

That left us with 17, 28, 33, 65.

Now we will obviously use the first two in the draft but presumably we are still interested in Jesse Smith.

Now Smith aint worth 33 and if we did that trade our 3rd pick in that draft would be 65 = no good in weak draft. So the club splits 33 into 40, 42, 56.

This leaves us with 17, 28, 40, 42, 56.

Gives us the option of using one of the last three for Jesse Smith and having 4 picks in the draft, all well within what would have been our 3rd pick at 65. Smart trading for mine.

Re: Who is the 4th club in Burgoyne Deal

pick 16 was what the Saints traded to the Bombers for Lovett.

yes and that was on traded to the hawks for williams which was on traded to port for Burgoyne making it a four way deal can't understand the confusion pretty simple to me

You saying that we could have got any of Cunnington, Rohan or even Stevens shows how much knowledge you have on the draft..

Mate we picked up Mark Williams for the difference between pick #16 and pick #24. Are you seriously trying to say that Mark Williams is not worth an 8 spot downgrade? Pick 24 in this years draft might end up being better than 16. It's not as if they ended up with pick 40.

You do realise that Williams has played his best football when he was the main target in the forward line?

I'm not sure if i should take you seriously or not. In a previous post you stated that at his best Williams is a mediocre footballer. It's clear that you don't know much about him and as a result of this you are not seeing how good the deal was for us.

At his best he would just about be the best player on Melbournes list.

Essendon and Port come out winners in this imo. Complicated trade in general.

Re: Burgoyne Deal Done

the top 44 are great then it drops off badly !!
ohh guess which picks richmond has 3 , 19 , 35 , 40 , 44 what a coincidence.

The draft really only gets good at about pick 62 to be honest, which is about when Collingwood should feature (pick 30 will go for Ball).

In all seriousness though, from my opinion of it all, what I've heard and seen through of the TAC through the year the draft will mimic 2007 very closely.

It is shallow, but there is still a lot of quality. The top 20 will be as good/close to as good, but clubs will be less likely to find quality after about 40 I'd say... Without the speculative 17 year olds who clubs may punt on earlier than usual, it forces clubs to look to experienced players a bit more.

In 2007 our first pick wasn't until 30 but we got a very good prospect in McCarthy, but by our next pick clubs were taking people like Dew, Mark Johnson and we got Toby Thoolen who was delisted the next year. The draft was said to be very week, but the top 30-35 have all shown they are more than able to cut it at the top level. This year won't be differ dramatically from that.
