I don't get the 'rebuild' line of thinking.

Sandi could even play until end 2017 it wouldn't surprise me if he did. The sub restrictions I think will benefit him next season.

Mundy and Barlow are a touch younger than the two expected to retire. We will look a lot younger without pav/macca/duff/Crowley/Sylvia on the list.

And our gun mids have 5-7 years of peak play left.

The people running the rebuild line are believing media regurgitated nonsense imo. I don't think pab will finish top five in the doig this year.

If we can get McCarthy (Bennell also) then we should be top two again next year. If we don't Id expect us to still be top four or five.
Bringing in McCarthy and Bennell, retiring all 5 players you suggest and having the likes of Weller, Langdon and Blakely coming into the team next year with A Pearce IS what I consider a mini-rebuild.
So we are basically talking about the same thing but calling it something different.

I would love to see McCarthy in the purple next year and I think (assuming he isn't a tool off field) Bennell would be fantastic for us. But I am not interested in giving up the family jewels for it. I would not object to trading a couple of rnd 2/3 equivalent players (deBoer, Suban, C Pearce), a single round 1 pick a round 2 pick or two this year or next. But if we have to sacrifice all our picks before 40 for the next two years and/or a couple of AA players I think we would pay too much.
I understand that you have to pay for quality but that's why you have managers. We need to get serious about upgrading picks for a change. Swap rnd 2 and 3 picks, swap lesser priority players, trade rookies, buy expensive list cloggers. We need to get creative to find better picks.
It's all well and good to "do the nice thing" with StKilda and Roberton but either we front up and tell them that there is a favour due or we need to remove "nice" from our future plans. This end of season is when we tell all an sundry that favours are due. We want better picks.
OR
We admit that we are not serious about the trade table for quality players. In my mind it is that real/important/desperate ... (I'm looking for a word here)

Honestly I like our young talls but they are all pretty pedestrian. long way to go even for AP. They are a bit like that joke that eddie murphy does about how delicious regular crackers taste when you havent eaten for days, but when your full you realise your just eating boring old crackers.

In order for Freo to maintain a top 4 position next year, the Young Pearce and Taberner do not need to replicate McPharlin and Pav's quality, they merely need to play the role effectively (which I'm pretty sure Alex can do, but I'm not sold on Tabs yet) and we make up for the loss of quality in other parts of the ground. For example:

Scenario A
Out: Pav and Luke
In: McCarthy replaces Pav, Pearce replaces Luke and Bennell takes DeBoers' spot.

Scenario B
Out: Luke and Pav
In: Tabs and T Smith replace the old blokes AND A Pearce becomes a revelation up forward alongside Tabs AND Neale, Sutcliffe and Sheridan become All Australian.

Scenario C
Out: Luke and Pav
In: Tabs and A Pearce AND Mayne recovers form of 2013 and with Pav out of the side kicks 50. AND Weller wins the rising star in Suban's spot.

You gotta look at the big picture. Geelong lost Gaz and won the flag the following year and the Hawks don't seem to be missing Buddy. It's totally possible to stay at the top, although a proven goalkicker like McCarthy would be a hell of a headstart.

Trading Barlow would be a big mistake. You don't rip the heart and soul out of football clubs. Can have greater ramifications than just losing the player.

What if he wants to go? The guy has been played out of position for a large part of the year. He suffers from being able to do everything well, but nothing exceptionally. He could well soon be overtaken by guys like Blakey, Weller, Langdon etc.

Great post, I feel Tabs is like the Dockers of old that gave you a brief inkling of hope with a great performance that hints at greatness only to go back two steps the following week.

He showed something against Port that was extremely exciting, I honestly believe if he can put something similar together this weekend (I'm 95% sure he'll be playing) he wont look back and will go from strength to strength, especially with another pre-season under his belt come next year. Also, we would probs win the game which is handy:).

To stay on topic, we probably wont see anything eventuate on the McCarthy trade until the last hour of trade week as GWS decide to either take the best offer we can give or risk losing value on McCarthy and trade him next year

Look at the game against Port. The bloke is an absolute star, you don't let guys like him go unless they demand it.

Barlow is great but he hasnt really ever taken up a leadership role, hes a year older next year and his output has reduced this year. He would have some value right now.

Did you see him when he captained against Port?

He came from the clouds to get in the face of Port players pushing our younglings around, ran himself into the ground and played one of his best games for the year.

If that is the Barlow we get from being captain, make him captain.

Yeah thats true. I love Barlow but I want a functional fwd line for the future more.

Insert Barlow jumper pull photo here.

Barlow has shown plenty as a leader. He won us the QF against Geelong. He doesn't need to be super vocal, like Nick Suban to be a good leader, the way he plays shows he's a good leader. He hasn't been at his best that we all know and love this year, arguably due to his position, but I'm sure we will see him at his best again. I just cannot fathom trading Barlow. I want him to retire as a Freo player!!! I know we need to be rational here if we want Cam Mccarthy but surely there are other players..

I can picture Ross walking up to Mick at the start of the preseason and saying: "We are getting kill in transition run, we need a linking midfielder running from the forward line working into space just like Taylor on Bigfooty said and although it's not going to be a glamorous role, it's vital for the team. We don't have the cattle to do it"

Then Barlow puts his hand up for it straight away.

I don't see why we need to chose. This time next year we could be watching Weller pack his bags too, then we have neither.
Yeah your probably right. I just want the club to make some moves this trade period. Would rather not lose either but Im in the camp that doesnt have faith in our current tall forwards.coming through

I get the feeling clubs may ask for spur. Great corageous defender that could help gws backline. From qld and may be happy to move closer to home. Not sure we have a ready made replacement but grey may step in.

Without disagreeing i think Geelong have shown that you can and indeed must trade players who are part of the club's fabric if it is in the teams interest to do that. There is a balancing act, and there is inevitably some pain. But i like the ruthlessness that was shown in bringing Lyon to the club and think we need to show that same quality across every aspect of the club's operations.

Who did Geelong trade that weren't already leaving? (Hunt, Chapman etc)
