Traded Cameron McCarthy [traded to Fremantle with picks 7, 33 and 71 for pick 3]

You'd have to trade for him the year after. Or risk him going to the draft, with no guarantees that the PSD will still be around.
Unless of course west coast or another team finish lower and get him through psd.
Unless GWS don't offer him a contract.

I think we will trade, but we won't be forced to pay overs as we can wait a year if needed.

GWS know he would refuse a contract and would have nothing to lose by offering him one. Why delist him when they could trade him?

I don't think you will pay overs either. But I think you are under-estimating the benefits of getting him in 2016 rather than 2017.

If Freo get a top 3 pick (likely), they won't trade it for McCarthy alone or for a pick between 10-18.

Potentially McCarthy & 2nd rounder this year for Freo's number 1 in 2017? No guarantee Freo will rise quickly again, injuries/retirements/form/rebuild/players leaving, could be a good pick

I think if Freo's putting a 2017 first rounder on the table GWS will be more interested than not, given it helps roll over academy points (assuming they've got more prospects coming through) or spreads out their talent base over more years.

Future 1st rounder should get it done, but I think Freo will try get something more due to us being so bad.

Haven't gws got a better version of McCarthy coming through their academy this year?

You would like to think that it will be sorted out at the trade table at the end of this season, to be honest I'm already sick of hearing about it and the bickering of his trade value. Would love him at the club and I think the deal will probably be something like McCarthy and GWS 2017 second round pick for Fremantles 2017 first round pick, could potentially be GWS 2016 second round pick. I think that is a pretty fair trade and anyone from Freo saying that he is only worth a third round pick is kidding themselves.

Our first round pick the was things are going atm will be in the top 5, they wont be getting that.

A couple of third rounders gives GWS points for academy picks.

Also, GWS are in a corner now. They played hard ball last year. Paid the price this year.

I think they look poor if they drag their feet for a huge pay day.

I understand why GWS did what they did last year. But unfortunately, circumstances have now meant they lost out on a great deal.

This is difficult now. If Freo finish bottom few ,which is likely now, they won't give away pick 2 or 3 for McCarthy. They will more likely go into full rebuild and have to acknowledge that there are so many holes that just getting a Key Forward won't fix anything.

The rebuild starts with taking best-available high draft picks (eg Wingard Pick 6 2011, Wines Pick 7 2012 - still recon that's awesome). To make matters worse, Freo don't have a 2nd rounder.

I just can't see a deal that on the one hand would satisfy GWS and on the other be something that Freo realistically has to trade.

If Neale leaves, maybe so - but can't really make an assessment until he actually asks to leave.

That's why I did say our first pick in the 2017 draft. You would think that we will improve next year from this year as the likes of Pearce, Weller, Langdon, Tucker, Balic will all improve added with the return of Fyfe and then obviously the potential of McCarthy and other young guys coming through. I think our pick in 2017 will probably be around the 8-10 region

Sorry I thought you meant this year's one. 2017's first is still waaaay too much though.

He's not worth a first rounder.

End of story.

He may have been at the end of 2015.

A lot has happened since then.

I wouldn't even be parting w my second rounder if I was Freo.
I have a feeling you would be a terrible list manager.

So why exactly has his trade value plummeted? Is it because he's sitting a year out from footy? I don't think thats the case.. think clubs would happily give a high pick for hurley and he's taking a year off. McCarthy aint as good but still point stands..
100%. He's not sitting on his couch smashing beers all day, he's remaining very fit and firing for the future with South Fremantle. Worth a 2017 1st rounder in my opinion. One of the best young KPFs in the country, yet some people think he's worth a third rounder? Where's the logic?
