Can Hawthorn succeed while ignoring the elite end of the draft? - Part 2

He's a good selection at 45, but massively overrated by you Hawthorn fans. You guys carry on like he would be a bonafied top 2 selection in the 2017 draft if it were redone, but the reality is, clubs with high selections generally crave more than slow, average-kicking, jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none with top 10 picks.

No club in their sane mind would even think to pick a guy like Worpel over Naughton or Brayshaw.
Ah, he won a BnF in his 2nd year at 20. Would clearly be top 10 in that draft if you re did it right now.

Speaking of overrated. That would be Naughton.

But you're right, a very good selection at 45, and will be a long term player at the HFC.

Who cares about your second rate picks? You're not drafting the next Bontempelli or Dusty with those picks, or if you learned anything from your club's history, the next Hodge or Buddy.

From 2005-2009, we picked up a spine of A-graders in Jack Riewoldt, Trent Cotchin, Alex Rance and Dustin Martin.
Crabs like Mitch Lewis, James Worpel, Harry Morrison are a joke by comparison.

and they shit themselves for seven years

Seriously Hawk fans, I can't believe you have to tolerate all this bollocks from salty oppo. Clearly your 3-peat has you still living rent-free in their heads.
I don't mind the bollocks I learn a thing or two.

Why do people like you keep pretending B&Fs mean anything? Who cares about club awards?

That's your opinion, but every club in the AFL would take Naughton over Worpel without thinking twice. Not even worth thinking about.

Wait so is Worpel a crab 🦀 or not?

Now I'm so confused.

Not a crab. Worpel is a battle axe. There is nothing remotely subtle about him, and he doesn't do finesse, but it is always good to have one or two Worpel's in a team.

He gets the ball, usually in a tough contested possession and then hoofs it forward and hopes for the best.

Of course you would pick a key position player over a midfielder. Just like Richmond did in 2004. Oh wait. 🤣

Sounds like a good player and a type all clubs need. Not even remotely a crab 🦀 thanks for clearing that up.

Very good return for a pick 40ish. Hawks have been very efficient at the draft lately picking up best available players at many of our picks. If we continue to make these good calls at the strike rate we have been it will give us every chance to rise up the ladder.

tigers are three more wins from the same ‘love’
Fantastic handling of the send-off for your two veterans today. Stratton's goal handed to him by Gunstan near the end was one of the great moments of the season. Absolutely brilliant. I reckon your club is in pretty good hands, despite the naysayers.

So you call a bloke a crab, then can't retract based on him winning a BnF as a 20 year old. Righto.
You don't rate BnFs? We had a bloke called Matthews back in the day. Won 8 of em, but never won a Brownlow. Will still go down as the GOAT.

Just coz Worpel doesn't have a flag yet, doesn't dilute his individual achievements in his career to date.

He averages 8 touches a game this year. He's overrated.
Was just going to say their key forwards have been average this year. Wallis has shown them up. For someone as hyped up as Naughton is didn't exactly set the world on fire this year. Is a contributer ATM not a star. Worpel's last 3-4 games before he got injured were like his whole season last year. Was BOG against the Saints until the injury. Top 5 in tackles for most of the year so was doing the grunt work and the offensive stuff came in later in the year.

You have 2 guys who do that well in Luke Parker and Kennedy.

BnFs are club voted awards with their own club-exclusive criteria. They're not an objective measure of a player's quality. Matthews was a great player, but however many BnFs he won is hardly the indicator you look at.

Worpel is a slow, not particularly damaging midfielder. Dime a dozen, no matter how badly you try to pump him up.

Now this is just embarrassing.
He had no pre-season, and he's still in his second year playing as a key-forward, after spending all of his youth as a defender. He already proved his credentials in 2019 kicking 30 goals after being thrown up forward with no training, and leading the AFL in contested marks.

No amount of Hawthorn supporter delusion will change the fact that every club in the AFL would have Naughton over Worpel in a heartbeat.

So you can cite his 2019 form to suit your narrative, but not Worpel's??
That's like comparing Mitch Lewis' 2019 to this year. It's just proof he's gone backwards. Lewis missed the entire pre season with shoulder surgery, but he's the crab, and can't use that as an excuse for the form drop off!!

Naughton will be a good player. But he's overeated at present. Based on 2020 form. Thats all you can go off.

sure, but every club would still take Naughton. If Beveridge approached Clarkson tomorrow and suggested a straight trade of Naughton with Worpell, Clarkson would agree faster than his umpire complaints.

In your opinion. I reckon he's pretty happy with Worpel to be honest. What he's produced for our club in a short space of time has been outstanding.
