Can Sydney rebound after their GF debacle?

We'll be fine, but I forsee next year being pretty even from 12th up. All teams need to be on their guard, even the mighty Hawthorn:rolleyes:

Black - proven AFL players who are in no danger of losing form due to age in 2015
Red - Older players who are in the best 22 on paper but could lose form dramatically in 2015
Blue - Players who have shown a bit at an AFL level but have not proven themselves to be proper AFL players yet
Green - Player who has been injured so much we cannot rely on them to play in 2015
Purple - Have not proven themselves at an AFL level yet (with little to no experience in AFL games)

If anyone does not want to count that then the results are

Black - 19
Red - 4
Blue - 4
Green - 1
Purple - 11

like your analysis RUNVS ... did this for hawthorn as well (red is older than 30 years)

Black 23
Red 6
Blue 5
Green 0
Purple 7

Would be interested in seeing your detail but this may not be the right thread. 23 black says to to me that the Hawks will be hard to beat next year.

I'm in the Swans to rebound optimist camp. GF is a massive wake up. I think there is enough talent in our list. However the coaching will seriously need to improve. I cannot believe that Horse was named Coach of the Year.

Don't mention the COLA. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it.
I literally laughed out loud with this comment.

Great to see a Fawlty Towers fan on here. Such a brilliant series that was.

That whole episode is comedy gold.

I think the manner of the loss will hurt the Swans. It will interesting if they go into the season as they did last year and play the same game style or if they look at the GF and think they need to change things up. if they don't change things up they will need a plan B for stopping us (Hawthorn) scoring. We seem to be able to score against them at will. Their game style seems toi hold water against all other sides. The trade restrictions will hinder them and is probably part of the reason Goodes is still running around. They can't play him against rebounding sides, he hurts the Swans too much in that scenario.

I think the will be anywhere from 4 - 7 on the ladder. Unfortunately from there I think they are only making up the numbers as they are not strong enough against the top teams away from Sydney. 2012 they pumped Adelaide in Adelaide but the Crows were an anomaly that year due to a VERY favorable fixture.

In the last decade, Sydney in -

Mumford, Tippett, Shaw, Franklin, Ryder but for a ban, all keen to go to Sydney.

Sydney out because homesick -
...

Insinuating that Mumford and Shaw were superstars before we recruited them.

Mumford was a 3rd string ruckman behind Ottens and ****ing Mark Blake at Geelong.

Shaw was a servicable wingman and Collingwood only wanted a 4th round pick for him.

I see no reason as to why we can't rebound next year. Our backline depth is worrying if Grundy or Ted go down. Our next best are very inexperienced. Our midfield is still one of the best in the league with many young prospects ready to go if need be. Buddy will be Buddy, Tippett needs to get going and stay healthy.

I would still have an expectation of a top 4 finish next year.

If you can't think of a player who's left Sydney in the past decade who's matched Shane O'Bree, you shouldn't be involved in the conversation. I notice you revised your question from "left" to "out because homesick", so I'll take that as an admission that at least one of the likes of Mumford, Malceski, Schneider, or Dempster probably came to mind.

You said northern clubs are inherently disadvantaged. You didn't expand on why this was so.

I could only assume you were suggesting that northern clubs struggled to attract players from interstate while also losing players to homesickness. I cannot think of another reason.

I listed 5 high calibre players who sought out/were keen to get to Sydney in the last decade.

You said conversely heaps have left in that time. You then list 4 players. Mumford stayed in Sydney, only leaving because of salary cap pressures. The same for Malcescki, only he went further north. The same for Dempster & Schneider, only they actually came to Victoria.

None if these players left because they didn't want to be in Sydney.

Please tell us why the northern clubs are so inherently disadvantaged. Because clearly it has nothing to do with player recruitment or retention.

What has really hurt the Swans in recent years and most people do not really talk about is that we have terrible clearance numbers and when our midfield allows the opposition to get their hands on the ball first and get the ball out easily they find it far to easy to score. Basically Kennedy was the only reliable clearance player we have/had.

Next year should be different though as Mitchell is going to be in the team (no way he is not going to be) and Heeney might be able to get some game time as well. He is supposed to be a good extractor of the ball as well.

I am not sure about Dunkley but I also know that Mills is supposed to be excellent with the clearances as well and they will be on the Swans list in 2016.

Which is strange, because you only mentioned homesickness after stating you couldn't think of a single decent player to leave Sydney or Brisbane since Shane O'Bree. Anyway, if you're honestly struggling to think about why a competition with ten clubs based in one city with the vast majority of talent coming from WA, SA, or Victoria doesn't have inherent disadvantages to clubs based in Queensland and New South Wales, then I don't really know what to say.

Defence is questionable, however mids and forward line are both extremely strong. Franklin and Tippett is still a scary proposition for most teams. Midfield still has some very good proven players such as Kennedy, Parker, jack and hanners. Players who need to perform and cannot be carried are shaw, pyke, jetta, goodes and Reid.

We have some youth who have shown they can perform at senior level in Mitchell, Lloyd, rohan, Cunningham and to some extent jones.

Of course we need a lot to go our way( like every team) but there is no reason why we cannot push for a flag again this year.

Will the loss fire Swans up to take next step in 2015 or will the nature of their embarrassing defeat cut deep at their confidence?

Safe bet to be up there but unsure if real flag challenger
They played the GF like a team that had no character. It was one of the most gutless efforts from an AFL team I have seen and it will set them back a decade. At least in 07 Port had the excuse that they weren't very good.

The northern clubs are inherently disadvantaged by the structure of the league.

Rubbish. The biggest two names the previous two seasons wanted to go to Sydney. This year players are lining up to go to Brisbane.

But if it is really is such a big disadvantAge, leave.

You guys tell us all the bloody time how powerful the bloods culture is, yet try and defend your handouts to the hilt.

We will be better after a season with Buddy and Tippett working together. Solid midfield full of depth. Someone in this thread suggesting we won't play finals......surely a urine sample? We will win the flag no doubt in my mind. Just by looking at the other lists we are a certainty to finish top 4.

Hawk supporters seem to have a 2013 bum hurt feel to their posting this in this thread. We had a bad day at the office and now we're a write off:rolleyes:

2013 was a pretty good year as I recall it. My head hurt for a week or so after, but don't remember any pain in the bottom area. Maybe I wasn't in a state to realise

But if it is really is such a big disadvantAge, leave.
You spent weeks squealing that a two game start to the year was a monstrous advantage to Sydney but you don't see how travelling every second week, having to build a list from 75% plus interstate players and having to play away regardless of position if you're playing a Vic team in the Grand Final disadvantages a team. Can't say I'm surprised.
