Carlton are 3 years away from playing finals football. We still have the worst list in the AFL. The Geelong game was a reality check.

We might have the most inexperienced list in the AFL, though it is by no means the worst.

When you look at it, we've basically playing the same team as last year, plus Ackland, Cloke and Gibbs. However, when you at the guys yet to debut or still improving:

Bower
Edwards
Blackwell
Anderson
Austin
Benjamin
Hampson
Grigg
Flint
Hartlett
Raso

Those are ten guys basically untried right there. Granted, not all of them will make it, but you'd like to think at least 4 or 5 of them will cement themselves into the 22. And that's not considering the rookies:

Aisake O'hAilpin
Jackson
Young
Jacobs
Jamison

Again, not all of these guys are gonna make it, but given we've had success on the rookie list with guys like Thornton, Carrazzo and Bentick, chances are that one or two of these guys could prove to be valuable players.

That is 15 people on our list with, barring Blackwell, a grand total of 3 games experience. Add to this guys in our 22 with a heap of improvement left in them:

Murphy
Gibbs
Kennedy
Russell
O'hAilpin

and to a lesser extent, older guys who are just beginning to perform consistently and also with improvement:

Walker
Bentick
Carrazzo
Simpson
Fisher
Betts

and you can see we've got some excellent young talent coming through. Where we're hurting is experience to backup this young talent, but we've still got a few talented, older guys in Fev, Stevens, Thornton, Waite (might be considered with the last group by some), Whitnall, Scotland and although he's heavily criticized, Houlihan. The problem lies with people in this category - we lack players who we can rely to perform consistently, mainly due to bad drafting prior to 2002. But the talent is there, and all that is needed is experience for us to become a very strong side.

Many people seem to think that just because we finished bottom the last couple of years, the draftees will have an immediate impact. Some guys will (Murphy, and by the way he's going, Gibbs), but by and large it won't be another year or three before we reap the benifit of the majority of guys taken in the last two or even three years. Until then, we've got to make due, but the talent is coming, slower than some had hoped for, but all they need now is experience to show the rest of the footballing world just how good we will be :thumbsu:

To be honest I think you have most of the list in place now to challenge in 1-2 years. Dont think you will this year but the work has been done. I'd like to see one more KPP player in the mix. Gibbs and Murphy will allow you guys to have near on the best midfield going around in the comp in a couple of years I rate them that highly, just need to make sure you have the talls at both ends to support them. I think you are closer to finals that 3 years away though!

Their supporters won't agree, but our list is better the the Kangaroos, Collingwood and Richmond. In a couple of years it will be better than Melbourne, Essendon, Adelaide and Geelong. In 5 years the only lists that will be better or on a par will be the Dogs, Hawks, Lions (freaks), and maybe Dockers.
Thats my opinion.:thumbsu:

Worst list! haha - Murph, Gibbs, Kennedy, Russell and Walker, plus Bower, hampson and Grigg all top 20, and we have a great emerging list. Add a few more young guns who are coming through plus the Irish and I expect a clamouring of interests in our next Coaching appointment.

Good effort with the post. Quite happy with that, when you think about all the 'inexperienced' kids we have. Vast majority of our team really :) Only one way to go, and it's up :)

The Geelong game was certainly a reality check, but I still think we are 1-2 years away from challenging for a finals spot. Our kids need more game time under their belts, and therefore, more experience.

Once this happens, ala the Bulldogs, our move up the ladder will come.

We need to put the Geelong game into perspective. They are a very good side. Don't let their underachieving of last year fool you.

We are still a long way off challenging the top 4 teams in this league, but we certainly DON'T have the worst list in the AFL.

Realistically 7-8 wins this year should be our aim, with 10-11 wins next year and then hopefully finals in 2009.

your probably right although it's possible we could be in finals in two years. but as blue bear pointed out it's only inexperience holding us back. Theres nothing you can do to speed things up so sit back and try to enjoy watching the kids develop and think about our future success.

if carlton arnt dominating in the next 3-5 years then it will be hawthorn!
if you look at hawthorn's list... it looks pretty dam good...
midfeilders like.. hodge, mitchell, lewis, x.ellis, b.muston
forwards like.. williams, buddy, and dowler
throw in some guys like ben m'glin*, burchill, c.young And a few others...

does our list really compare to that?

Hell yeh it does out of all the players you have named only hodge, mitchell and williams are proven players. The rest are only potential and have proven nothing, but buddy and birchall look as though they will make it.

im just saying that there is alot of hype about the hawthorn team... watch them on the weekend and you will see.
although in saying that im not trying to say that we are going to be bad over the next 3-5 years... but hawthorn are going to be there abouts.

like st .kilda in the 80's they won 5 woodenspoons in 6 years ,83,84,85,86,88 (87,89 Richmond)

Collingwood 1976 wooden spooners to Be Runners up to North Melbourne in 1977

hopefully we'll come out all guns Blasing and smash Essendon all around the G :) take it out on them as what other
clubs have done afte they had big losses

just about all vic clubs don't have a crash hot list not ones who got alot of Injuries won't

wonder in 10 years time will anyone dare to say we got the worst list, we aint no more fev said they forseen a loss was going to happen sooner or later

Guys, do not over react after one game...

Look at it this way.

New players, Cloke, Gibbs, Ackland, Murphy, Kennedy, the latter 2 missed a bulk of footy through injury.

Development in Setanta, etc....

Bower, Blackwell, can not get a game? Why is that?? It must be the developing depth...

Relax, all will prevail.
