AFLW 2024 - Round 10 - Chat, game threads, injury lists, team lineups and more.
Carlton are 3 years away from playing finals football. We still have the worst list in the AFL. The Geelong game was a reality check.
We might have the most inexperienced list in the AFL, though it is by no means the worst.
When you look at it, we've basically playing the same team as last year, plus Ackland, Cloke and Gibbs. However, when you at the guys yet to debut or still improving:
Bower
Edwards
Blackwell
Anderson
Austin
Benjamin
Hampson
Grigg
Flint
Hartlett
Raso
Those are ten guys basically untried right there. Granted, not all of them will make it, but you'd like to think at least 4 or 5 of them will cement themselves into the 22. And that's not considering the rookies:
Aisake O'hAilpin
Jackson
Young
Jacobs
Jamison
Again, not all of these guys are gonna make it, but given we've had success on the rookie list with guys like Thornton, Carrazzo and Bentick, chances are that one or two of these guys could prove to be valuable players.
That is 15 people on our list with, barring Blackwell, a grand total of 3 games experience. Add to this guys in our 22 with a heap of improvement left in them:
Murphy
Gibbs
Kennedy
Russell
O'hAilpin
and to a lesser extent, older guys who are just beginning to perform consistently and also with improvement:
Walker
Bentick
Carrazzo
Simpson
Fisher
Betts
and you can see we've got some excellent young talent coming through. Where we're hurting is experience to backup this young talent, but we've still got a few talented, older guys in Fev, Stevens, Thornton, Waite (might be considered with the last group by some), Whitnall, Scotland and although he's heavily criticized, Houlihan. The problem lies with people in this category - we lack players who we can rely to perform consistently, mainly due to bad drafting prior to 2002. But the talent is there, and all that is needed is experience for us to become a very strong side.
Many people seem to think that just because we finished bottom the last couple of years, the draftees will have an immediate impact. Some guys will (Murphy, and by the way he's going, Gibbs), but by and large it won't be another year or three before we reap the benifit of the majority of guys taken in the last two or even three years. Until then, we've got to make due, but the talent is coming, slower than some had hoped for, but all they need now is experience to show the rest of the footballing world just how good we will be

if carlton arnt dominating in the next 3-5 years then it will be hawthorn!
if you look at hawthorn's list... it looks pretty dam good...
midfeilders like.. hodge, mitchell, lewis, x.ellis, b.muston
forwards like.. williams, buddy, and dowler
throw in some guys like ben m'glin*, burchill, c.young And a few others...
does our list really compare to that?
and to a lesser extent, older guys who are just beginning to perform consistently and also with improvement:
Walker 20 years old
Bentick 21
Carrazzo 23
Simpson 22
Fisher 23
Betts 20

Comparatively older. Goes to show how young our list is. Barring 4 or 5, we rely heavily on guys who are in their early 20's - once these guys are in their mid 20's and the <20s are a couple years older, we should be a very competitive side.if this is the older guys...
