I'm going to go early and say Ben will be bid on in the top 10. He's tall, a great user, super clean hands and can rack up the footy. Doesn't have a clear weakness, aside from the odd shank. Could maybe kick more goals. Don't agree with the Rowbottom comparison. Rowbottom was always workman like and never a big ball winner for a mid-even as a junior. Ben has way more class and racks up the footy. Reminds me more of Bont in the way he plays. Think his range is anywhere from top 5 to late 1st.

Lucas I am less sure on. Great user and can rack up the ball even when playing wing/half forward. He is very outside though, and those types rarely go too high up the draft board. I see his range as anywhere between a late 1st and a 3rd. Would like to see him play halfback this year as I think that's where his attributes best translate at AFL level.

Nice. Has ESPN done in previous years? How accurate was it.

https://www.espn.com.au/afl/story/_...pah-harley-reid-ashton-moir-zane-duursma-high - ESPN's top 10 projections from 4 April 2023. Interestingly, 7 of their projected top 10 ended up being drafted top 10.

The other 3 were drafted 13th (Koltyn Tolstrup), 29th (Ashton Moir) and 30th (Archer Reid).

They had Moir rated 2nd after Harley Reid!
ESPNs draft work has mostly been done by that Knightmare fellow who used to have a big draft thread on here too, he was generally accurate so I'd suggest that would've translated in ESPN. Having said I don't know much about the new fellow doing them, but as you say he was fairly accurate with that top 10 so it's a decent record.

Just because teams historically benefitted from a s**t system doesn’t mean we should continue the s**t system until everyone gets a turn.

I don't want EVERYONE to get a turn...

...I just want CARLTON to get a turn!

:p

In fairness, the review is more aimed at the academies. Father/son being dragged in is inevitable as it is an outlier. Other than the massive free hit for a couple of clubs (Geelong and currently the ‘dogs), it has not been a major issue. I cannot see access being restricted, but the nonsense of sacrificing points for future gain and paying for prime candidates with multiple later round picks is incongruous.

Access to players should not be negotiable, but paying full price should be required.

Hopefully the changes are not enacted until after the Campo draft, to give us access under “current” rules. I have no issues if we are forced to pay full price for Cody Walker. The problem arises if a bitter and twisted recruiter bids early to force a club to overpay. (Any danger?)

Similarly the Gold Coast academy bounty should have been harder to acquire.

This 100%.

Father/child mechanisms should remain in place to allow kids to continue their parent's legacy (if desired).

It shouldn't be about getting a bargain or manipulating the system.

He rated both Rankine and Lukosius ahead of Walsh … but yes generally very good.

More concerned about SOS
Good point! Totally forgot he's lurking in the shadows at the Stains once again. Definitely will make it difficult to get them as well, may tag team with his mate DoDo. SOS was my favourite player of all time, and although he's been led once again to the Dark side I hope the Carlton is still in him and he tries to still do some right by us.

He certainly had Lukosius ahead of him but I'm not sure he did Rankine.

He did have Bailey Smith ahead fwiw, citing his more penetrating and attacking playstyle. Basically, the same critique everyone had of Sam - he was a bit vanilla - while Smith had more game-breaking ability.

Iirc his top 3 for the draft was Luko, Smith & Walsh.

Stumbled across this, pretty good vertical testing for Ben
Getting the impression Ben is very driven. Brother Lucas was higher rated in the state talent squad, while Ben was overlooked. Ben overtook his brother through the year, racking up consistently higher stats as he moved from wing and half back roles in to the engine room.

Thinking Lucas still superior disposal potency, but remains outside. Ben is an absolute banker to make it, I am not totally convinced on Lucas yet.

I need to see more of Ben to be convinced on his foot skills if he's put some work into it this off season, but he's got the rest of the game down pat. Just a beautiful mover and seems to have the core strength you need as a mid in todays game.

Whose to say that Lucas doesn't change that this year? Could be driving each other to be their best. Fingers crossed.
