The distinction is about pre and post clearance, the game heading more to the latter, especially with the 666 and stand rules. It's setup and structure driven

My point was a simple one I make no distinction between any contest anywhere anytime - they are all contests I think the whole notion of this type of clearance versus that type of clearance is gobbledegook and spin - merely referencing structure and strategy ( gameplan)
The interpretation of contested numbers elude most, as they also include loose ball gets, ground ball gets and ball indispute, areas that have nothing to do with a physical one on one contest, or tackle

Well they are misleading and irrelevant to teh extent that they dont reference contested ball
Was always confident that Ed would fit into Voss's gamplan, and stated as much, as he works well in his limitations, much like Cotts did last year.

Ed was just as good if not better as a HFF than the two named incumbents are - the fact that he can also rotate through the middle is a positive
Those numbers will improve, as we continue to find a balance between going long or sharing the ball

It will improve as our turnover numbers are healthier than last year, which is a more sustainable source
Yep turnover numbers have improved CBB numbers have disappeared into a black hole- lets fix that in particular
Yes, seen the continual discussions by many people regarding Fisher, it really is starting to esculate, in an unhealthy manner. It amuses me actually, it's like we only have one player in the side that is underperforming.

Strangely, in the North game he had more clearances than any of our players to halftime, 2nd most for the game, meaning he got first hands on the ball. And 4th highest contested numbers

My question would be, if Fisher is and has been so poor, what are our other players doing, namely our guns?

If people want every player to be a tackle machine (the game is moving further away from this as a coaching priority), then perhaps some of our bigger bodies should get more scrutiny

Just my take of course

re bigger bodies : No question that Cripps ( who looked injured to me) Hewett ( who has been playing injured ) are well below their expected performance levels in the Adelaide game- clearance numbers have Cripps #2 in AFL after 5 games ( LDU #1 ) - he has been playing well for Carlton. Kennedy? played off HBF coming back after two weeks off - obviously not fit, Docherty didn't play - we were comprehensively smashed in the midfield...

Re turnover game- if you take intercept marks out - all you have left to cause a turnover is pressure on the ball carriers - meaning tackles. So it makes absolutely no sense to suggest that the game is moving away from tackling - how else are you going to cause turnovers and win the ball to attack - if you dont defend ie tackle?

btw - I don't see anything unhealthy about discussing Fisher - people have eyes and he isn't the only one that has been referenced as being disappointing as far as defensive actions go....which is not to say that the whole midfield wasn't awful against Adelaide. I agree with you that not every player has to be a tackling machine- however every player has to be able to make a tackle in their area- otherwise you can kiss defensive systems good bye.

I think this is a really important point. I feel the reason for our drop off as a clearance team is due to our rucks. At the moment it appears to me like the mids don't know where the ball is going from the ruck contest which is why we are ranked 15th for clearances so far this year. De Koning and Pittonet are unpredictable at the moment with their taps and our mids are suffering as a result. Pretty confident we were top 4 or higher last year.
Tdk needs to stop running under the ball. He is too focused on the opposing ruck. Till he backs himself in will continue to be an issue

Fabulous alright , I just saw a snippet on fabulous on The jumper punch..
Great interview that, what a character Alex is. Met him a few times at functions, he's a ripper bloke. I don't think many people really understand how good that team (and many of the individuals) was from 79-82. I loved his comments around Harmesy doing Dusty things way back then. Harmsey was my favourite back in the day and really could do it all.

The 79-82 is hugely underrated and forgotten compared to the other great teams of the 80’s (Essendon and Hawthorn).

Can confirm Alex is a ripper. Met him in the Medallion Club dining room having a few beers after a final a few year back. Talked to him about the game for about half an hour without bring up his past before I slipped in "you used to be a able to finish i50 pretty well back in the day" to get an appreciative nod.

That 79-82 side had so many young players that played their best footy before 25. Alex would be a star in this league. Sadly after his first few year my memory is him pretty much being taken out week in week out till it affected his confidence.

That was Sheedy’s answer to our Mosquito Fleet, every time we played Essendon, at least one of Marcou, Sheldon, Glasscott etc would be carried off on a stretcher.

The only things I've seen of Binns are highlights from around the draft, haven't read much into him or anything.

From what I saw on those he did seem quicker, but the other thing I noticed was he seemed to be a fairly crafty and clever kick. Seemed to play with a bit of x-factor. I was surprised to read writeups after watching those to see kicking was a noted weakness.

The other thing I noticed was he did seem quick. More explosive quick than top speed - which I don't recall seeing much of in the highlights so he might have elite top end speed for all I know.

If those presumptions based on his highlights are correct I could see him being a different player to Hollands in a good way. Again from what I saw there might even be potential to play more on ball/attacking midfield with Binns than Hollands. Like I say that's just from highlights though, anyone who's watched him play would likely be able to tell me if I'm way off the mark.
Seems to have a bit of mongrel for a little guy.

agree…atm he’s light on for weight…needs to play to his current strengths, leg speed and leap…they should show him the tape of his game against Naitanui in Perth a couple seasons back.

If anyone wants to know why a lot of us 60 year olds are little “bitter and twisted” these days - it’s the fact we grew up at the football following our club during the glorious Mosquito Fleet days as described by Alex Marcou with a 72% win/loss record and three premiership’s in 4 years, on the back of a rebuild which took 2 years.

Was much easier to rebuild in the pre-draft days.

A club like Carlton could essentially buy it's way out of trouble (or buy itself into more which some clubs did). Doubly so if you were blessed with an incredible zone like we were at the time

And we weren’t averse to sacking Brownlow Medallist (Triple) coaches either. ;)
