I reckon players that will break into the side and cemant a spot are Steven Browne, Chris Yarran, Robert Warnock, Dennis Armfield, Mark Austin ( I hope) and Chris Johnson.

thoughts??

I've got Browne, Yarran and Warnock in my side for round 1 so it wouldn't surprise me to see them being regular senior players in 2009.

Johnson is an interesting one. I don't have him in my round 1 side, but considering Scotland has had surgery and is in doubt for round 1, I'd have CJ as his replacement. He'll no doubt get a fair few games in 2009 but I'm not sure if he'll cement his spot in the team.

If Aussie rips it up this preseason he could easily find himself in the side for round 1. I think the only thing that may prevent this is the lack of a suitable match-up for him in the Richmond side. I'd like to see him play in excess of 10 games in 2009 and continue his good progress.

I think Armfield may struggle a bit, to be honest. If he gets 10 games he'll have done very well for himself.

Thank God someone else has said this.

I think Armfield will struggle to get a game next year with the additions and the return of Walker, Bannister, Hadley and Houlihan.

Johnson is a much better kick than Armfield.

Carlton's Best 22 for round one

We'll stick it up the Tigers in round one with this team minus Stevens and possibly Scotland.

B: Thornton Jamison Johnson
HB: Grigg Bower Simpson
C: Gibbs Hadley Robinson
HF: Houlihan Waite Walker
F: Betts Fevola Kreuzer
R: Warnock Judd Murphy

I/C: Yarran Fisher Cloke Carrazzo

It was hard to leave Russell out as a defensive forward/midfielder, but my gut tells me Robinson will step up to AFL quickly and get a game in round one in place of of the suspended Stevens.

Johnson will play Scotland's role if Heath misses.

Which suits my wish to see Carrazzo play more through the midfield next year as a hard running midfielder and giving it off to the better kicks and quicker legs.

Possibly keeping Bentick out of the team.

I saw 7 Ants games last season and Austin was beaten almost all the time at FB and CHB . Out played and out muscled by VFL players .

Then his 4 games in the AFL were all very ordinary to say the least . He needs another full season in the twos , and needs to show a lot of improvement there this season . Then , and only then , should he be given another chance .

He is still very young and may show the improvement needed in 2009 . Certainly hope so . But there is a long way to go .jbo

Any reason why Scotland wouldn't line up?
Ratten said on SEN that Scotland has had an adductor release and doesn't start running until late January.

Maybe you didn't see the right games because Oz was an emergency for a reasonable amount of games this year.

Hawkins kicked seven on him at full back because he is better suited to the half back line.

Hawkins is a gun and a man child.

IIRC, Austin played on and beat the unit that is Chris Dawes in another game when he played CHB.

Do you guys think Yarran will be starting Round 1?? I reckon he will be up there for the rising start this year! Thanks

Will definitely play pre-season and NAB Cup. Injury free and up and about I'd love to see him line-up at the G Round 1.

If Cloke is a dud at CHF does anyone seeing Hampson been given a go there because than we still have our 3rd ruck option aswel would that be an idea if Cloke is a dud....or could Hampson play round 1 as the lead up forward aka Fishers role to let Fisher ease into the season?

For now, this is the team I feel best about.
Apologies to Austin, O'Hailpin and Hampson

JR will step up next year and move to the wing where he will put to good use the knowledge Ratten has trained him into as a defensive HFF this year. Every side needs quick outside players who can pump the ball long inside 50 or hit a player on the lead.

I'd rather see the ball in the hands of JR and Houlihan outside the centre square and on the wing than Carrazzo.

Houla, Russell, Scotland, Simpson, Stevens and Yarran will be the beneficiaries of Warnock's arrival and Gibbs moving on the ball to give us more centre clearances.

Tough ask to leave out Anderson who was impressive against Richmond & Brisbane and Armfield who impressed against Port.

no gibbs in the side???
Whats up with that man??

Just read through most of the sides posted...its a good when there are so many variation,s...REAL DEPTH.......... but do you have the talent, time will tell.

You blokes know how quick it can come together once the raw material is assembled. What's your opinion of our progress and immediate future? Are you confident of going back to back?

I think our future success will depends on what we can we acheive with our tall Fwds. I am confident in the ability and talent across the rest of the park.

When Fev is gone or reduced in output and our tall backs mature I see Waite very likely to be moved Fwd, probably partnering MK as our tall Fwd duo.

The question will be can these 2 get the job done ? I would like to think so.

Maybe Austin will develop and be a 3rd option Fwd.

Umless we snare another tall Fwd option somewhere I dont see anyone else on the list capable of being cosistently dangerous as tall Fwds
