People thinking COS could play R1 can probably chill now.

He looks a good prospect but he is still a baby in key position terms.

I do expect him to get some games this year though… but not R1.
Yeah pick a game where he can be 3rd defender and try intercept but maybe no Charlie Curnow accountabilities yet

If a Kolo or Jack Henry were unavailable he’d be in the mix.

But I expect him to bide his time in the VFL until the time is right for him to debut.

He looks a likely type.

I think he and SDK should be a formidable marking key position duo in time.

Good to see O'Connor, Miers, Bowes, Zuthrie all in good nick. But hard to take much more away from a hot windy practice match. Devo to lose Guthrie again, hopefully just a few weeks.

8 on the bench next week. Interested to see where Holmes, Duncan, Tuohy play.

I will say firstly that i haven't watched a minute of the game.. so just reading people views at this stage..
But anyone worried about Atkins needs to read the situation, I boiling hot day, bruise free going through the motions game midday on a Thursday in summer is about least favourable conditions/situation for Axe to do much.
He doesn't want a quick hot outside day, he wants a contest war when there are genuine stakes.. today for a few players I dare saw was just a glorified cardio session.

Don’t think there’s a player on the list I’d worry about less than Axe being ready to go when round 1 starts. The dude is the ultimate professional and leaves nothing out there on the field.

I thought he was fine, not sure what the worry is about. In addition to the conditions you've mentioned, they massively rotated in terms of ToG and position so it felt like plenty of guys drifted in and out of the game because that was literally true.

Are we expecting big T-Rex Conway to get the nod over Stanley round 1?

The only knock on him is his endurance at this stage, he'd have Rhys covered in just about every other aspect.

Feels like we've got the perfect foil for him in that respect with Blitz too. Can't hurt having one of the best runners in the league to help him out when needed.

Plus, Tomahawk will be taking a lot of the F50 stoppages, and SDK might even be doing some in the D50.

Feels like it's all setup for Conway to play now. His only flaws can be covered well by others.

I’m no Stanley fan… But I’d be surprised if Conway gets the nod over him if Stanley is fully fit.

Conway still has a way to go for mine.

Looks ok but is still many years away from his peak.

He still should get games this year… but it’ll be next year when he takes the reigns as our clear #1 ruck imo.

The Axe played OK from what I saw. So, I'm not sure where this is coming from.

I can see that POV, and I'm a bigger defender of Stanley than many.

But the club love Conway, and if the difference is negligible between the two, and we've got 3 (or even 4) players around the ground who will offer chop out in the ruck (Hawkins, Blitz, SDK, Neale) then I could see them giving the gig to Conway and seeing what he's got.

We wouldn't exactly be throwing him to the wolves, and while you're right that he's a mile off his peak, his football right now might not be that different to what Stanley offers.

It goes back to that old belief that if the difference between the players is small, you pick the younger guy as he's got scope to improve, and you need to get him games.

Let's say we play a couple of finals this season.

8-10 games to Conway and 15-17 to Stanley sounds about right. This manages Stanley's workload and gets us quality (which he still has) over quantity. And sure if any injuries pop up maybe Conway gets a few more games. But I wouldn't be signing him up for 25 games and Stanley sitting on standby, at all.

Conway's ready to start stepping in but not required to take over unless Stanley is seriously bad.

I think he barely touched it otherwise, though. Tbf hard to judge given how hard they were rotating but also how many of our forward entries were 2-3 smaller guys running back into an empty paddock after the Blues had turned it over.
For mine, his major deficiency is a lack of agility.
