We have to beat them in the midfield and deny them the ball. Melbourne took control of midfield and Geelong collapsed defensively.

Do we bring in Peps this week because this will be trench warfare for at least the first half.

I think so. I think strong contested players might be of more worth than speedy forwards in this case.

I’d bring SPP in for Motlop and make Motlop the sub. SPP’s gives our forward half a better balance with his pressure.
Not sure how we deal with Hawkins though.

The only way to deal with Hawkins is to make sure their midfield doesn't get the ball.
We could keep them to 8 goals and he'll still kick 5 of them.

Clurey doesn't come in for anyone except for Jonas, Aliir or McKenzie.
Unlike the quadrangle of doom up front, we can't carry those four at the back. Especially against Geelong.

Who are we pretending has an injury in order to bring Pep on?

Whoever is gassed the most out of Duursma, Motlop, Amon or Bergman. These four should be on their bike every time there is a turnover, providing options down each wing. We wait for Geelong to setup defensively and we're going to lose every time.

Geelong's MO is to solidify fluid ball movement with ball retention that freezes out free-wheeling teams. The thing that has always countered Geelong's style is bringing the fire of hard ball and loose ball gets to the coal face and putting them under pressure and then explode out of the contest, which is how Melbourne ran them down.

The reason I want Pep as the sub is because I want him fresh when Selwood, Dangerfield and Guthrie are tired. Interestingly, in the past few rounds, Geelong has been giving key players under 70% TOG for matches after the bye:

Pep doesn't have the tank to last a full game - even when he’s been above 70% TOG it’s only ever been marginal. What he does have is burst speed and power that we can exploit against Geelong’s defence and secondary mid.

Cats would remember that they played us minus Lycett, Fantasia, Butters and Duursma and them plus Stewart, Tuohy and Duncan. Even if they rush Tuohy and Duncan back I’d still back us in to run them into the ground.

We can't have finals situations being overwhelming for him so that he's solely responsible for turnover goals at half back like against the Bulldogs.

Fantasia for Georgiades. Either of motlop or Powell pepper works well as the sub. Apart from Georgiades that’s pretty much best 23.

It's an unpopular opinion but Bergman out for Powell Pepper is something I'd seriously think about.

We can't have finals situations being overwhelming for him so that he's solely responsible for turnover goals at half back like against the Bulldogs.

I think the coaches will certainly consider that in their conversation.

At the end of the day though, I think the experience that he endured as a 12 gamer, against the Dogs, in what would have be akin to finals type pressure, will do him the world of good.

To be fair, the time before that Clurey dominated Hawkins to the extent that it was one of the worst games of Hawkins’ career. Although it probably makes us too slow in defence bringing in Clurey as well as keeping McKenzie to free up Allir more would definitely be a consideration ( I wouldn’t do this as I think maintaining stability in defence is extra important, and we’d lose rebound off half back).

i can envision a very close game, where geelong get an early lead and we spend 3 qtrs trying to pull it back. geelong play a very short possession game coming out of defense then unleash when they get to the midfield and find an opening in the zone. ken better have a good tactic to break this game up or i am going to go berzerk.
