How can you say that when he has a pretty good track record in the finals? he's playing a difficult role at Half Forward.

His performance tonight was okay.
However, I judge the Half forward role on one of two abilities.
Goals or pressure.

Goals - Papley, Stephenson. Goal a game. Can win a game.

Pressure - Betts, Wingard. Blokes who make opposition crap their pants.

WHE is neither.
9 goals in 15 games.
12 in 11 for Stephenson, who’s having a down year.

I definitely agree that WHE's form has been crap for most of this season (and most of last).

But, he seems to have turned a corner of late and has had a couple of promising performances. He took 9 marks today in a really important linking role.

We don't have many blokes that can cover the ground, take plenty of marks and dispose of it cleanly. He's that and he's playing a bit of an unheralded role at the moment. Your analysis seems more suited to someone playing higher than he is (although his lack of intensity can be infuriating).

I agree with you on Stephenson. The only difference between what Varcoe did tonight and what an out of form Stephenson would have offered, is that Stephenson would have kicked that snap that Varcoe fluffed and would have drawn a better defender, which might have enabled someone else (probably Thomas who was getting into some good positions) to cash in a bit.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a replacement anyways, so I’m certain WHE & JT will stay in the team.

WHE being scared really shits me. You can be soft if you’re a goal kicker. You can’t be a soft plodder.

Yea, I wanted Varcoe in the team, but he didn’t do much. Would bring Stephenson back in for him.

JT just floats in and out of games. Not expecting great things, but he had 8 disposals. The same amount as Cox, but I swear I saw Cox 30 times during the game.

He plays the arks, meaning he gives space to other forwards. He kicks goals.

Would certainly take a half fit Sier over both Brown brothers.

Praying Monday night is a dead rubber so we can rest Grundy. He looks more shot than Beams after a few finger paints.

Grundy just came off a 9 day break, and now a 7 day break, plus a finals bye coming up. If he had any form of injury he wouldn't be playing.
I thought he got better last night, in the second half. The difference in his game at the moment, is that he isn’t dominating his opponent, particularly with his clearance work. That part of his game has completely disappeared. He did lay 8 tackles last night, so the work effort is there. His marking around the ground, is at a average rating at the moment, that could be a confidence issue. Apparently he is very hard on himself after every game. To me, he could be fighting within himself with his performances and getting frustrated.
He just needs one good game, where he is getting those centre clearances and marking around the ground. Funnily enough, he was the second highest ranking player on the ground....

I’d rest Grundy. Man looks cooked

reckon he could be carrying some thing. But Agree.

I know neither Stevo nor Broomhead have done anything at senior level to warrant inclusion but Steve surely needs to be in for finals. He’s too good. Broomhead I still reckon deserves more than one game, as a half forward, when our delivery to the forwards was absolutely appalling.

out: c Brown, Varcoe
in stevo, Broomhead/Sier if ready

If Grundy was carrying something, he wouldn't be playing!! He has had a long break. He will be playing 2 games in 16 days, in footballing terms, that's a decent break...

I don’t think there is much doubt he is carrying an injury. He can’t jump.
