Fair point, but I more meant from a team balance perspective. McMahon and Firrito are more similar than McMahon and Atley in terms of age, game style, etc.
If I was going to bring a player in for Atley, for instance, it would be Mullet
Are you serious?
Is that you Gibbo?
I'm going to put it out there and say McMahon will surprise a lot on this board and show he's up to it.
He's in the best shape of his career, he's smart, disciplined and can actually use the footy really well, but most importantly he's hungry and he's earnt his call up.
on ya fatty McMahon
Yes, I'm serious, and no I'm not Sam Gibson.
You are perfectly entitled to your opinion and I can even understand it. I just disagree with you and 90% of the posters on this forum.
He frustrates me at times too, but he is critical to us at the moment. I recall some time recently when he was dropped and people (strangely enough) began noticing what we were missing - run and link up options. Sometimes he is the *only* one who does it. As with Jarad Waite, you have to take the bad with the good.
100% Agree..... If this pick is the NMFC going forward then WTF.
It's a blight on the clubs recruitment process that a slow 28yo who has played 16 of the last 50 games gets the nod ahead of the future in Mason Wood.
How is this looking toward the future Crocker???
This club is turned into the laughing stock in the space of 9 rounds. Frikken Joke !!!!
#swapclarko ?There is a lot of that going around.
Sack Clarko!!
Just to clarify two points:
1. McMahon was selected because Atley has stunk it up all year. Mullett is not yet match fit and McMahon is our best performed defender in the VFL. There is no-one else playing well at VFL level. Yes, McMahon is not the future and it is a sad state of affairs if he is getting a game. Unfortunately that's just where we're at right now. Mullett will come in as soon as he is fit if he is in any kind of form. In the meantime, get yourself some Kleenex, have a cry and suck it up. Let's hope McMahon plays well. He's a better user of the ball than most in the team.
2. Daw was not selected because we already have three tall forwards and three tall defenders. Adding Daw at either end would make us too tall and the match committee believe none of our other talls have yet played themselves into getting dropped. Some may disagree with this, but that's the rationale. I hope our talls play well, but if not, I also hope to see what Maj can do at some point during the season.
Brown looks like he can barely run.
He needs to sit.
I guess with all this hand wringing over a 28 year old and the specious argument that team balance is age related, we won't be bringing back Wells and dal Santo unless we drop Boomer and Drew. Wouldn't want to upset our age quota.
In: McMahon.
Out: Winning.

I was enjoying this thread far more this morning BTron, before you butted in with all of your reason and logic.Players have been given opportunities over the last 18 months. Some have stepped up and maintained a presence in and around the 22 (Brown, Turner, Jacobs and now Dumont), others haven't (Wood, Currie, Tippett, Warren).
I could go into a selection breakdown but I couldn't be stuffed trying to bring logic to the table in this thread, its too far gone. In short we have been hamstrung by injury through the middle, and our key replacements have had injury and form concerns. Is their complacency amongst the group over their job security? Maybe. But I'd put money on their being more changes made if Adams, Harper, Garner and Mullett were fit over the last few weeks. I mean, what do we want? Brad McKenzie in off an injury lay off when he struggles to find the pill at VFL level? Another hack it forward midfield player in Jacobs into the midfield rotation?
I'm all for making changes but not at the cost of losing games as a consequence.
Turner and McDonald deserve a rest. Swallow and Jacobs deserve a run.
Daw deserves a run, and Brown/Waite could make way. I'd be happy either way.
Atley deserves to be dropped but is including McMahon into an already now snail like back line the best move?
Will Wood, who has been middling at best in the VFL provide a better game than Gibson? Less turn overs for sure but a better game?
Would a fit Mullett be a good inclusion? A fit Adams? Garner? Harper? Wells? Dal Santo? I'd say they would all likely provide more that McKenzie, McMahon and probably Wood on form.
We are scraping the barrel and I want us to win. Don't get me wrong, sending a strong message to the group is important but getting 4 points even more so. Playing guys who ain't showing a great deal at VFL level is worse than playing guys who go missing for periods at AFL level. Not by much, but it is worse.
Completely agree. A couple here have said he is not the way forward, not the future. Why would we pick someone for the future? We have to win this week so the selectors have picked the best side possible to win on Sunday. Seems reasonable to me. Who knows if we had have had another experienced head like Mcmahon down back in the 3rd last week we might have been better organised and the result could have been different.
Can kick too.I agree with all that except Warren.
He held Mayes to none/one goal (iirc) and didn't do a lot wrong. He is a battler no doubt but he was nowhere near as bad as some on here like to remember.....plus his defensive discipline/application is what some of our more talented players could learn from.
Anyway, spot on about Loose. I'm just happy we actually made a thoughtful change regardless what happens to be honest.
What 22 would you select for Sunday?
