Sorry but I can't agree with that, he's become an excellent midfielder now he's been afforded the opportunity. Anyone would think he was a 30 year old with no scope for improvement the way some talk on this board....He's not.

Edit :

He also doesn't have the luxury of Max Gawn and Luke Jackson putting the pill down his throat every game like Petracca/Oliver.
Keays would not be in the same class as Oliver/Petrecca with Gawn as Ruck.

I will say he is good for us, first half against Freo aside, and agree still improving.

I can see a semi decent midfield coming together for us over the next two years. May not be the best in the comp, but mid to top tier.

Keays very much part of it.

The issue is he is our best mid.

Melbourne's best mid is/are Oliver and Petracca.

That is the gap in midfield class we need to fill in.

Keays would be in Melbourne's best 22. On par with Viney?

Lets understand that Petracca is not elite when it comes to disposal efficiency - 61.5% for the year so far with kicking efficiency at 49.3%.

Ben Keays is 72.7% and 58.6% on the same two measures.

I’m going to have to agree with Mutineer on this one.

You don't think Keays might just happen to be even better with Melbourne's all round class around him compared to ours?

The thing with Keays is he can get separation quickly from stoppage. It's a trait shared by the best mids in the comp. He's not an elite mid because he lacks a bit of polish, but he's certainly no B grader. He's an essential cog in the midfield wheel.

Our problem is the mix. We have a coalface player (Crouch), a slightly more mobile coalface player (Laird), an in/out player who has lost his pace (Sloane), a genuine in/out player (Keays), and a predominantly outside player (Harry). Then we have a young inside player (Berry), a young in/out player (Pedlar) and who knows what Rachelle may become. I would be playing Berry and Pedlar every week, rotating with Laird, Crouch and Keays. Our CBAs aren't diverse enough and we aren't getting enough midfield minutes into those two young lads. The key is to get Sloane out if there.
If we want Harry and Peds to be our next generation we have to get them as much in tandem as we can.

I have a feeling about Cook too, with regards to maybe becoming the bit of silk we need through there, but it's far too early to tell. Plus there's the possibility of Hately joining in if he comes good.

The pieces seem to be there mostly, if they all reach their potential. I'm just not seeing the development path at the moment, apart from Harry. They really need to get Berry and Pedlar amongst it soon.

That is a possibility.

But the opposite also a possibility.

I personally see the midfield as a sum of all parts. Yes Keays would fit in the Dees midfield. Behind Oliver and Petrecca. Playing a second tier role.

He pretty much played that role against Port. Laird comes in. Schoenberg attended the most CBAs and we had our best midfield game in about 5 years. With Keays best game (most impact) of the year, with the least ball he has had.

Last year's game against them still haunts me, that was a horror show

Yup, probably the lowest ebb this rebuild has hit.

I mean, 2020 we got belted, but we were at ground zero. 2021 had some good wins against contenders up 'till that point, and that game was just a massive step back. Probably worse then the GWS game.

People that keep putting Benny down will continue to look more clueless the longer they keep it up.

Ben Keays would now get a gig in any AFL team, all he ever needed was the opportunity which Adelaide have afforded him

And those pushing Tim Taranto need a reality check if they think he offers more than Ben Keays..He clearly doesn't.

Season 2022

Season 2021

Am I crazy if I say I’d take Keays over Taranto? I seriously think he provides more, people criticise Keays’ skills but Taranto’s have been much worse over the past couple of years

The Keays criticism on this board is, and always has been, weird

It's not at the Matthew Priddis levels on the WC board level.

Re: Harry - I see him eventually turning into an in/out player, maybe more outside leaning as he isn’t quite a coalface beast, but I see him being the link man between the handball from a stoppage and the eventual entry inside 50. He’s the other guy (along with Keays) that I reckon can provide that separation from congestion

I agree with this.

Keays is better than Taranto.

It's probably better to do it quietly, the right thing to do, sure. Maybe you lead with a "heres what he's done since and this is why he's back" article/video.

But let's not pretend that the people who will be booing Walker in the coming weeks aren't mostly the same people who would have booed Adam Goodes or would be cheering on Tex if he played for their club and had done the same thing.

We do it too, there are issues involving Port players where maybe they've done something towards a woman or other peoples cars and we blow it up to be the most disgusting human behaviour ever because we get to have shots at Port, but we'd play it down if it was a Crows player.

It's like people will use racism or being offended as a tool to attack Walker and the Crows, because they don't like Walker and the Crows, more than they actually don't like racism/the thing they are offended at, if that makes sense. I'm not sure that's any better than being an actual racist anyway.

I don't know, I just think unless you've always been perfect and always will be perfect, add some value to the conversation instead of throwing insults and memes.

But hey, I'm just as bad because in all likelyhood if Tex played for the Power I'd probably be complaining about "the media cover up" or something instead of writing this post.
Well said. That's exactly how it is with footy fans - or political parties, or any other tribe.

It takes a lot of honesty and self-awareness to overcome that.

Yes, it's all about perspective and which side of the fence you're on.
Your openness and honesty regarding your own subjective perceptions and responses is really refreshing. Kudos!

There are plenty in here and from other Clubs who are not prepared to give Tex a clean slate, which says plenty about them and nothing at all about Tex.

Tex, WELCOME BACK!! :D

I hope he gets a bag of four goals or more in an exciting game played (and watched/appreciated) in good spirit.

Let's face it - he's going to get booed. And for reasons most eloquently described by AFC3000, it will by people who care more about having a crack at an opposition player, than out of any genuine concern about racism.

That's the way things are. And I'm sure Tex, and the club, are aware of that, and prepared for it, as best they can be.

I think the only thing the club can do is to not make a big fuss about "welcoming Tex back, yay!!" and just be low key.
