He is detrimental to quick ball movement. He has zero offensive impact in his game.
In his AA and B&F season when we made the Grand Final, he was the in and under who extracted the ball to these players. We wanted him to get more outside ball to get a better balance to his game but now he is always hanging on the outside with no defender (because the opposition know he can't hurt you his disposal) and our players give him the cheap possession since he is free. Get him back in and under and leave him there to make him play on his opposition since you know he can't cover his opponent when he turns the ball over but one on one he can beat him......

I would try sloane off halfback and run hamill off a wing..with his pace and ability to take the game on he might be a revelation there

Right now, I'd probably just leave Hamill off the half back line. Look at the move to a wing next season though.

Not against that..just looking at where sloane could be effective and how we can give the midfield a speed injection
Sloane will be more effective when fit.

Would look to play him more forward with stints on a wing when fit.

I know this is the thread where everyone posts that we should drop every senior player, and play everyone in our SANFL team - but I'm a bit worried that were giving our kids more and more opportunities in key roles, and they're showing 2/5 of fu** all.
Totally disagree. The kids are good it’s the mid career plodders that are the problem

You keep banging on about it but I think we are playing badly enough with an almost full strength side so they can accuse of what they like. They are a corrupt organization, the VFL.
lassified on Monday night, with host Craig Hutchison naming six clubs who already look shot as finals contenders.
Hutchison stopped short of flagging tanking but said that under the bizarre circumstances imposed by COVID-19, uncompetitive clubs may ease up earlier than usual to focus on next season; perhaps within weeks.

I could not care for that muppets views.

We keep saying the kids are good, senior players are the problem. That may be true to a certain extent, but the fact remains that the seniors are finding the ball a lot more than the kids at the moment.

I don't know if we're just blinded by our frustration with the team and senior players.

They (senior players) may be underperforming at the moment, but the kids still haven't proven that they can consistently get their hands on the ball.

Nicks needs to make a call quickly on what our defensive group should look like moving forward because we can't carry 10 defenders into next week.

He's had a good look at what they all offer now. Time to end a few careers

Probably because most young players are in peripheral roles. Forward line is almost all youth (ball never goes there) and the backline has what, two youngsters?

Jones the only young player in the middle, maybe you count Keays. Both second rotation

Majority of the senior players are reluctant to take the game on quickly after taking a mark and create quick ball movement

Kelly and Hartigan frustrate by regularly killing momentum, but our back line is constantly under siege and I have a little sympathy for them. They crack in and try at least, they are just bound by their limited foot skills.

Kelly is such a culprit for this and Hartigan usually is as well but I actually think he took the game on a bit. In fact I think I saw him run with the ball at least twice and unless I was very much mistaken he sidestepped a player without being caught. So, credit where it's due.

Our best passages of play in the last quarter coincided with Matt not getting near the ball...

Correct. And how good was the attempt at fast footy in the first 5 minutes while he was on the bench!
He does gut run to make position for the chip kick to him, which we need Jones etc to learn more of, but I thought Jones first 10 mins included that and looked the most promising I had seen from him. Then how often it was Crouches and Sloanes in the middle again. Doh.

As much as he deserves to be dropped... there is bo way matt c will be dropped after that game..

And are the Mackay lovers happy now... each one of them should be made to write a 10,000 work essay on just exactly what is was Mackay provided in that game that a bloke like scholl wouldnt have..

Mackay was his usual pittiful self.. 16 meaningless possesions.. sholl couldve been given that game and provided just as much if not more..

The sad thing was....that is what we consider a good MacKay game! Thats his ceiling. Got mid-teens and didn't majorly screw up.
However, last quarter from defense. A 200 gamer, according to biased Dwayne has no one to go to, but the down ground view showed he had meters to run, draw the man hbl to Jones, or kick wide to the lead. No Dmac tries and inboard kick to a Stengle running the other way. How is that 200 games of experience?

Look, it makes me incredibly unpopular because it doesn't align with the groupthink, but I'm more concerned about our youth.

Hamill? Great. McPherson? Sure, though he only just still qualifies as youth (at least he's different).

Jones is getting the midfield minutes. McHenry is getting time upfield. McAsey is getting the chance to run and jump at the ball and play his natural game. Stengle was back in his ideal role.

And they looked so-so.

I'm just not as overwhelmed by them as others. I REALLY want them to succeed and I back in Haggis, but I'm concerned by how simplistic it is to blame every player over 25 for the disaster we're facing.

Look, I did enjoy watching the endeavour, so maybe this is a bit of post game frustration and concern. It's not like we have any other options.

Keep in mind that our youth are surrounded by a senior core of turnover merchants. Of limited senior players that stifle momentum. Expectations of them must simply be tempered by what they are surrounded by. You notice the kicks to WC forwards? What if McAsey was getting that delivery from Sloane, B Crouch each time he had space? What if Stengle and McHenry could rove a pack that wasn't a moon ball setup for Barrass and McGovern?

Best thing about today is you can start to see a backline emerging with a combination of defence, intercepting, run and kicking

Needed Laird out of there. Hope that continues.

Also need Kelly gone. He tries hard and is courageous but he doesn't do enough defensively to compensate for his flaws with the ball.

Was Smith more half back or wing today?

I like Sloane when he plays forward, he’s crafty, a very good mark for his size and reliable kick for goal.

But is he too slow to put on the pressure there that is needed these days? Might depend on who else is around him.

Mid-size forwards have come to the fore eg DeGoey, Stringer. Could be worth a crack.

I think I have also noticed that Sloane (IMO he is playing injured though) is paying stuff all attention to his midfield opponent. Like he expects to still be tagged? Sheed had a field day on M Crouch in the centre too, not paying heed to his positioning.
Captain obvious, Nic nat is winning taps, set up accordingly...no, not us.
Add in fumbles Brad and it seems Nicks is a slow learner or lacks some hanging plums.

Seemed to be lining up on a wing.

Leave him there as he covers the lines.

Did Nicks give any hints to his thoughts on Matt Crouch’s game in his presser? Did anyone ask him a question about Matt’s poor disposal?

I don't think I can recall a worst disposal game by a player.

McPherson only just turned 21. He is very much still youth.

It’s not at all simplistic to blame M.Crouch, Laird, Hartigan, Mackay, Kelly, Lynch because Blind Freddy can tell how they are all currently on field anchors around our neck in one way or another.

Lined up on the wing. No back line today. Ran midfield structures. Best he has done in that role IMO.
How good was it when he could link up with Hamill!! Christmas for him, someone else who wants to play!
Spot on with Kelly, been trying to say it for years now. Doedee is the obvious replacement for him.
