Please explain it to me then, o all-knowing one :)
Well you see, I was making a joke that no one got.

Ben Keays is a season over/dud opposition specialist.

Ben Keays has played with us since the start of 2020, and played well. Most of the games since then the season has been over and/or it was a dud opposition.

I would love him to do it when it mattered. That time hasn't yet come for him or the team.

Then when responding to why the hate, silly answers.

Our seasons have been over pretty much rd 5 for the last 4 years so thats not really a big call.

Yes that's the joke. It is a dig at the club disguised as a dig and Keays, one of the most obvious hard workers at the club.

If I said Keays can't perform in finals it would have been too obvious.

So coaches votes as follows

Adelaide v St Kilda

8 Ben Keays (ADEL)
6 Lachlan Sholl (ADEL)
5 Jordan Dawson (ADEL)
5 Rory Laird (ADEL)
3 Jake Soligo (ADEL)
3 Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (STK)

You would think they were as follows -

5 Jordan Dawson (ADEL)
4 Ben Keays (ADEL)
3 Lachlan Sholl (ADEL)
2 Jake Soligo (ADEL)
1 Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (STK)

Or

5 Rory Laird (ADEL)
4 Ben Keays (ADEL)
3 Lachlan Sholl (ADEL)
2 Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera (STK)
1 Jake Soligo (ADEL)

So did Nicks give Laird 5 votes?

You are correct - regardless of how you allocate the votes, at least one of Dawson and Laird was voted as BOG by one coach and not listed at all by the other coach. Always fascinating when that happens.

It is technically possible for it to be both Dawson and Laird, but probably unlikely:

5 Dawson
4 Keays
3 Sholl
2 Soligo
1 Wanganeen-Milera

5 Laird
4 Keays
3 Sholl
2 Wanganeen-Milera
1 Soligo

I agree, don't get the hate.

Has limitations, busts his gut week in week out. Puts up enough good games to warrant selection
Keays is not first in line to be dropped from our forward line (Murph) and who would take his spot? Pedlar was out of form and is now injured, McHenry sucks, Jones sucks, Schoenberg (mostly) sucks and is a midfielder.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned that dangerous tackle call on cook... He slung the player but he's head was nowhere near the ground... Am i the only one that think that was a totally bs call?
It was a text book perfect 2024 tackle. Yes he used momentum in the tackle but importantly, he did not leave the player defenceless by pinning both arms. Furthermore, he did not drive the player downward into the ground, only around, just like many tackles occur each game.

Absolutely not a dangerous tackle and not a free kick against. Clear umpire error. Poor decision and deserves a response from AFL umpires HQ.

Across the border another high profile tackle occurred this weekend when Jeremy Cameron slung Nick Daicos by his collar and comically flung him through the air resulting in heavy impact with the ground. This tackle could be construed as dangerous but it was judged as fair and play on. It was unique in it's style but within the rules and did not leave Daicos defenceless nor did it drive him downward into the ground. Good decision.

Inconsistencies in umpiring is, in my view, as large a blight on the game as any of the rules themselves. And I have quite a list of stupid rules which need addressing.

More umpires has not been successful, at all, in adjudicating the game better.

Agree, he isn't keeping anyone out and I feel like we've got a guy who does a role that was normally left to midfield rookies.

Not all players are there to win brownlows or b&fs. Guy does a job plenty of issues before him.

Yes he did, but did the club select him to play in the position he got his 30 touches or did the club select him to play in the positions they wanted him to learn.

This goes back to did they play him as a key defender or just in the backline. He swapped between half back and back pocket.
I thought he played half back in the 30 possie game - but possibly more freedom

Well that's a creative way to dismiss a player getting coaches votes three weeks in a row I guess. He's been excellent.
Yep, absolute dud...

His last 4 seasons:
  • Kicked 66 goals
  • 6 score involvements per game
  • Over 20 pressure acts per game
  • 1 tackle I50 per game
  • 15-20 disposals as a half forward (high 20s when a midfielder)
Also a very hard runner two ways and gives us a pressure release option between the arcs quite often through pure gut running.

Has been one of the best cheap pickups this club has had. Anyone that still bags him will never change, best to just ignore as it's not based on any semblance of rationality.

22-12. Still half a dozen games to go. Should be a 30 goal year. It’s not terrible

It's a very good season for a half forward role, sitting top 50 for goals and on par with the majority of other medium forwards in the game. Ranked in the top 20 for medium forwards that have played at least 15 games this season.

He's looked better the last two seasons from playing deeper inside 50 and having his inside 50 numbers drop off

Much better to have him pressure players and attempt shots on goal rather than trying to spot up forwards inside 50

(Stat gurus like https://x.com/crow_data_sigh/ consistently rate him as a poor field kick, so preventing him from taking important kicks has improved us)

Personally I think he does his best work around the goal square and within 30 meters of goal, then moving up the field to apply pressure. Basically exactly what Murphy should also be providing but doesn't, making him an actually good defensive forward.

I also never had much issue with Keays, but he was playing as a mid not tagger.
he also was the guy kicking for goals or delivering the ball inside 50.
even when he has a set shot for goal you can sense the whole crowd is nervous.
his skills is not exactly AFL standard.
but he can play a valuable role in the team.
Keays > Murphy > McHenry

He’s a good defensive forward because his first objective is to get the ball.
