I love in the clip when Reid does a little soccer towards the boundary to create space then collects and handballs over the players around the contest down the line at least 25 metres to Dudley, Pav in commentary forgets himself and makes one of those grunts of admiration: It was carrying a lot of baggage. Primarily I think fan-Pav going 'Yes! It's Christmas. Bagged a superstar with a teens pick!".

I see critical mass of slower players building up. The tall backline, all of Ras, Fyfe, JOM Dudley, Reid (they are NOT fast of foot, dont even), the 3 tall forwardline...

Wagner helps a bit hopefully but it's a concern. I'm at the point I'd drop Freddy as well but he being fast and able to run is pretty big for this team...

Max Speed (Murphy Reid) - 31.3 - 5th on list for both teams. Maybe he is quicker than he looks.

I agree we wouldn't want to lose too many players like Frederick and Sharp, or bring in JOM, Fyfe etc with out a similar playing going out.

This is why I am not keen on Fyfe coming in. Even if Walters was available, he would be another slow player.

Switta coming back in, should help a bit with this as well.

I knows it’s only one stat but Murphy Reid hit the equal 3rd highest top speed on the ground yesterday (with Liam Ryan and Hunt) behind NOD and Clark

I just dont think those things mean much compared to the eye test when it comes to speed. It's a single point in time that isn't reflective of actual gameplay.

Neither are rapid. The main part I should have elaborated on is triers like Ras and others probably get the short end of the straw when it comes to selection when push comes to shove because the lack of speed becomes a real issue. They just unfortunately get more blame for a team wide problem (at least for selection).

Sharp out, JOM to wing.

I'd be unhappy if we dropped Sharp. One of our best runners, even his disposal leaves something to be desired; that's just an inevitable trade-off with a high ToG running machine. JOM's disposal (or Banfield's) has looked so good precisely because we have NOD and Sharp in the team, picking up a lot of slack for repeat sprints and long runs that previously they would have covered on the wing.

Even though we subbed in a whole extra fresh player in Aish, it seemed like our defensive workrate really deteriorated in the last quarter. Which coincidentally was when Sharp got subbed off. Tracker backs it up too:

oh come one lets not do this. youd hope he would run so much given how often he turns it over. he is rubbsih, no other team in the comp would put up with the level of disposal hes been putting up this season so far. absolute butcher especially going inside 50. he was rotting at the suns for a reason.

Hard to assess the WC game after playing a team so putrid. But while some better things seen, also some of the same stupid obsession with over handpassing it leading to some turnovers to the witches hats. A lot of unnecessary errors that will get punished by a real AFL level team on any other week, and also, the zone defence doesn't work when teams change to just kicking short and sharp. But we continue to do the same nonetheless...

Not going to have a crack at individual players this week. The depth showed why they are depth and will be suitable replaced when their injured b22 counterparts are available. The anguish on here over player no. 25 or 26 just seems overobsessive when there are so many other issues to deal with.

Ins depends on availability. If Darcy and Young are still unavailable (which I hope as I don't want them rushed) then perhaps just Fyfe for BB, and JOM for Ras who goes to sub.

Let Smurph and the Wombat with a Bolton continue to hit up our three talls as beauifully as they were on Sunday and we have half a chance against the Dogs. Maybe it just me but perhaps push Voss up to the wing to mark and move it forward rather than Treacy. I mean wouldn't that make sense. While both are great contested marks and spleen rupterers, only one is a superb kick for goal and the other one has a shaved head.

This is some sound logic!

The numbers tell an interesting story on this. Round 1 our sprint numbers were disgraceful. Geelong beat us 306-264 on sprints, ran 40km vs 38km at high speed, and beat us 33-20 at repeat sprints.

After that, we've evened the ledger, and this is with Sharp well down on his normal running outputs in the past 2 rounds. But it's more because those games weren't "sprinting games" (which is ironic coz Optus is a bigger ground). Sydney game 31km at high speed apiece, beaten 186-198 at sprints, but beat them 17-11 for repeat sprints. Derby 35km apiece at high speed, beat them 263-249 at sprints and 23-22 at repeat sprints.

For now, I don't see many great solutions. Most of the talls on each end aren't less mobile than most of the smaller back-up options, and provide enough that you probably stick with that structure, at least until Walker comes back. Maybe Simpson can be a wild card, but he's behind the 8-ball there. In something that's been a theme of this pre-season, we're sorting things in the opening rounds that we should've sorted in pre-season. Once the cavalry's back, this shouldn't be much of a worry, especially off-ball (guys like Switta seem a lot quicker off ball than on ball).

Do you know how disposal efficiency is worked out? If you did you wouldn't quote it with confidence...

If anything most defenders have higher disposal efficiency because of the way the stat is worked out and/or most clubs allowing cheap easy kicks around the back.

Inside mid and forwards (i.e. the two positions Erasmus played) usually have lower disposal efficiency because of better defending by the opposition and increased pressure on the kick.

Pearce has the better of Naughton the last few times we’ve played, you’d think that’s the plan again

For those saying Worner is an automatic out, this post has a clip with his defensive efforts as our small defender.

Yes he absolutely burned the ball, but we don't have any other small defenders. If the coaches liked his defensive efforts I can see him keeping his spot in the backline and Aish being dropped

No. 5 I certainly noticed, especially Luke Ryan (it wouldn’t take much to be more aggressive kicking wise). That last clip should’ve been left to keep going as it was an equally good kick by Cox afterwards.

Times have changed and Naughton is basically a spud while Darcy close to the best KPF in the game. Doubt we leave Darcy to Draper (and definitely not Cox)

Players possibly available:

Fyfe, Young, Wagner, O'Meara. Anyone else?!

Not sure how we fit them all in if we are considering all 4 of them. Good the injury list is shrinking though (gulp!)
