Changes round 4 VS Sydney

I think it is hard to use the web on the wider ground. Question is what does Simpson do.
1 change the game plan and miss top 4 and a shot at the GF
2 have a different plan for a ground we hardly play
3 change it up if and when we hit GF day
4 keep banging head against wall at the G
I think leave it as it is and try for the rabbit out the hat on GF day, won't work against a vic team. Woosh changed things up in 06, we owe him a big thanks for that flag.

With the new stadium opening up it may give simpson the chance to change structures etc as the new stadium will be wider then Domaian but not as wide as the MCG. Also it will be interesting how non-WA teams fare at the new stadium particularly the MCG tennants which are Hawks, Tigers, Magpies and Demons as they are used to paying at the wider MCG and the new stadium in Perth wilk be wide too...but not as wide as the MCG.

Sheed and Watson should be in this week based off form. Will be disappointed if they dont give Watson a game because his form has been terrific and while he may be prone to some turnovers, his pace and x-factor is what our team is crying out for. Mutimer/Partington should also come in on form, perhaps Mutimer cause he has been more impressive in the wafl games that i've seen. Our team looked old, slow and one dimensional at times and the youthful exuberance of the tigers side gave them lots of energy, which is maybe what we need.

Watson could come in for Jetta and would move straight into half back and perhaps free up Wellingham to play wing/midfield/half forward. Dom would trade roles with Hutchings and Mutimer with Redden. If Darling's ankle is sore bring in Ezy/Schoey and swing Gov forward. It's unlikely to happen with Simmo but it would be a good shake up.

All in all:
In: Sheed, Watson, Mutimer, Schofield
Out: Hutchings, Jetta, Redden, Darling (Injured)

Hurn - Schofield - Shep
Watson - Barrass - Yeo
Gaff - Priddis - Masten
Wellingham - Gov - Cripps
LeCras - JK - Hill
Followers: Vardy - Shuey - Mitchell
Bench: Nelson, Sheed, Mutimer, Giles

Agree gaff is an outside midfielder. Serious question, how do you measure elite performance of an OM?

Me? I'm looking at I50s, goal assists and goals. Elite OMs score here. Gaff doesn't, he just racks up uncontested possessions with little impact, otherwise he would be scoring in these KPIs, particularly I50s.

Hence my rating he is an average OM. And my unanswered question, when did we as a club accept mediocrity?

Or are you arguing (poorly) that he is an elite OM?
Are you kidding. The point you are arguing against began as 'Gaff is fine', and mitchzz has agreed with a number of your points about how damaging Gaff is, or is not. Mitchzz seems much more similar to your rating on Gaff that 'he is an average OM' and not once did mitchzz suggest Gaff was elite.

But that is ok, stay up on your high horse.

I would have thought the Eagles were a lock here, but this 5 day break has me a bit concerned. Does anyone know any stats regarding 5 day breaks? Dam tough fixure going back from a wet Melbourne game with only 5 days to recover.

I'd keep Redden in this week. I thought he was one of our better players in the last quarter when the game was on the line. Plus, stats wise, he was in the top four WC players for clearances, centre clearances and tackles. He provides much more than Hutchinson.

Do we need two ruckman? Could we get away with just Vardy and bring in another running player?

Err what? I asked the elite question to ascertain the rating on Gaff. I think in the end mitchzz and I agree that Gaff is an average OM.

Which backs up my original point, this is not fine, unless we have become a club that accepts mediocrity.

Agree on both fronts. Keep Redden and bring in a runner for Giles.

The voice of affirmation will be that great we will get all the free kicks and that should be just enough too get us the wins !

Simpson needs to either drop Darling (that would be downright hilarious) or finally try something different and play McGovern forward to release him as a 3rd tall option. We're really not getting enough out of him right now.

Would love to see the coach actually roll some new players through the team like Sydney regularly does and expose some youth.

Nah that would be too 'flexible'

We are sort of stuck in the forward department with the injuries we have. Can always go Gov forward but he is so good at CHB you dont want to risk it. Darling cant be dropped due to nothing to replace him

Sydney only have a 6 day break and also have to travel no excuses
and their game was a night game so recovery is lessened
On selection, I like keeping Redden in - what he offers is what we will need,

Mobility and pace will be a concern so Giles is suspect. I have observed (glimpses on TV only) that JD competes well in the ruck. I wonder if we should look at this as it will also free him up a bit. He has head problems that need excising.

By pace I also mean pace to apply pressure - something we haven't done this season.

We will need two talls down back. Swans like to also push ruckmen forward - while their stocks are lower they are usualy effective.
Is it time for Schofield?

ins - Sheed, Watson, Mutimer, Schofield

out - Hutchings, Giles, Jetta, Mitchell/Priddis (Rest)

We need to freshen up the squad this week. Ill go something different try Barrass in the forward line. When he went forward for East Perth for the qtr of WAFL he looked good. Have the old firm of Schofield and McGovern on Buddy and Reid. Darling Can pinch hit in the ruck with occasionally McGovern and even Yeo for a few hitouts as Sydney's rucks are poor.

I think maybe put Watson in defence and send Wellingham or Nelson in the middle to freshen the midfield up a bit and rest one of Priddis or Mitchell to give the midfield a bit more pace.

I am fairly certain we will see a few changes this week, a few players will be carrying niggles and be given the week off before a 5 day turnaround.

If Darling's ankle doesn't come up, Lamb will come in, he is the only viable option. Whilst not setting the world on fire, he seems to be giving a 4 quarter effort each week which was his biggest knock. Who knows, with AFL delivery, he may surprise us. Watson played well as a forward for EP from all accounts, but will have to be upgraded from the rookie list so unlikely.

Sheed has to come in, dominated for EP. I only watched the 2nd half of the Tigers game, but Redden seemed ok to me? Priddis or Mitchell to be "rested" for Sheed, you have to reward his game on the weekend.

I also think that Murtimer / Duggan will get a game, not sure who comes out, but someone will IMO.

Look it isn't all doom and gloom like all this posters who have all of a sudden come out of the wood work but some tweaks and 100% needed for the team to move forward.

I think we need the extra tall defender as we are getting out positioned down back with Gov and Barrass being that player zones off and intercepts but if it doesn't pull off we are exposed and it has happened a fair bit this year. Now who do we choose out of Schofield and Emac? From reports Emac had a very good game but personally i would for Schofield as he has played that stopper role before plus he is more versatile in that he can offer some run, play on smalls and is better with the ball. With Schofield back in the team we can actually swing Gov or Barrass forward if needed.

Now this week i think we should try one ruck to offset bringing in another tall player. I like Vardy and thought he played well but for this instance i would stick with Giles who is more of a pure ruckman and has held his own.

This would be a good time to promote some youth to freshen up the squad so i would bring in Watson to replace Hill ( hasn't been out worst but is expendable) and put him on the HHF and get him to use his speed and flair and see what he can offer.

Sheed in for Mitchell who will need to the rest so he can get up for the Hawks game. If we decide to keep him in then Sheed to replace Hutchings.

Mutimer to be given a crack and to replace one of Hutchings or Redden.

In: Mutimer, Watson, Sheed, Scofield
Out: Hutchings, Hill, Mitchell, Vardy

Nelson Schoey Barrass
Hurn Gov Yeo

Wellers Priddis Gaff

Watson Darling Mutimer
Lecra JK Cripps

Ruck: Giles , Sheed, Shuey

Bench: Shep, Redden, Jetta, Masten

Vardy is much more mobile in the ruck so adds pressure around the contest and is a better forward than Giles. I'd keep him in over Giles but we dont really have any other ruck options so i'd probably leave it as is. I agree we need some other changes. Darling needs a spell to get his confidence back if he's not injured. Redden isnt really living up to his rep and Cripps was crap on the weekend, but i dont think he's really a crumber anyway. I'd move Cripps up to the midfield and use his pace there. I'd bring in Watson to play the forward pocket role and Schofield can play back with Gov up forward for Darling.

Out : Darling, Redden
In : Schofield, Watson
