At what point do we become rightly spoken about as a top 4 team then, genuine question.
The conversation has absolutely opened up. We may well be starting to click. However we've seen this all before. And I'd ask the question the other way, how many years does this forum need to get carried away EARLY with a 'turn around' before seemingly inevitable failure, before they just take a breather? Every year people get carried away early or in pre-season, and it comes crashing down. We're not even half way yet, the best teams are still only in 2nd gear and barely warming up.

In 2018 at 11-4 it appeared it had all clicked. We were finding ways to win and win ugly, our win against Melbourne was seen as a huge turning point. We then proceeded to win 1 of the next 8.

In 2017 we were spanking lower sides and getting beaten by the top sides, yet everything pointed to us being a contender.

In 2014 we were top and 2 games clear after round 12, before we were found out.

And realistically this year, come the end of it, we likely will only have played 1 top 8 side so far.

We're doing some good stuff no doubt, and maybe, just maybe things are changing, however not only have we got to actually beat some contenders that are fit and firing before full belief comes back, but most importantly we need to stop doing the same Hinkley era shit and these last 3 games have been full of that stuff, which can't seriously give anyone confidence given our recent history.

Bombing into a structureless forward line for little result, giving up center clearance goals or other rebound goals with incredible ease, horrible panicky skills when under any element of pressure, choking in the key moments, etc. The worst game was the GWS schmozzle, that was terrible Hinkley ball at it's worst, we were just lucky we were on the right side of the scoreboard pressure for once. The Brisbane game was a massively flattering score as we were torn apart with ease. Then the Carlton game reeked of all our recent close scrappy wins that didn't mean anything. So even whilst we haven't beaten anyone, its our last 3 weeks that have been pretty concerning and it'd be ignorant to not notice the way our footy is trending, given we've seen it before, before getting carried away.

Per Mitch Cleary, Lycett has PCL damage and will miss at least this weekend's game.

Pistol deserves to be in the side though and with Lycett injured there's no chance of experimenting with a 2 ruck system.

Sam Hayes?

I think that is a pretty fair assessment.
Somehow we are finding a way at the moment which is great, but you just can't help but feel it could change at any minute.
Hinkley is super stubborn and you can hear his arrogance coming through in pressers now.
You don't have to be Einstein to know where we are going to be kicking in forward. Stop that, stop us. Every team would be currently working through that as we speak.
Where is your variation Ken, where is your plan B.

I read that Connor has a heel injury, in which case give him the week off to recover and perhaps gain some flair when he returns. Mitch comes in for him...

REVISED

OUT:
Motlop, Burton, Rozee, Westhoff

IN:
Ebert, Lienert (or Watts, not Bonner), Georgiades and Hayes

... would love to have a Sam Mayes and Sam Hayes in the team... BT would go ABSolutely NAR NAAARS

Hopefully Rozee heel soreness, is not one of those lingering ones...

Still think Georgiades could come in for the Hoff. Ladhams played 83% game time, he could push that to 85%. A functional forwardline with another threat - Georgi over the Hoff is better than Hoff as a second ruck for 15% game.

Our boys will know how to ruck to Ryder. Put Ebert in the ruck.

He's actually about half right there. Teams with pace that move the ball quickly do trouble us. What he forgot to add is that teams who have that in addition to significant height advantage up forward are the ones who trouble us. We absolutely do not want the ball flying in quickly when our defenders are at a significant height disadvantage.

Yup, this is exactly why Essendon blitz us every season.

So we have weaknesses!
This isn't the first year and it won't be the last where the team that tops the ladder has obvious weaknesses.
To get in the finals, we only have to have less weaknesses than 10 other teams. In 2020, this is looking likely.
In 2020, there is no team without shortcomings, and all teams currently in the 8 have looked very ordinary at times. Including Brisbane.
What I like about us this year is that we seem to have more flexibility and more depth. Will it be enough? Maybe.
When I say "what I like" I really mean "what I hate" because getting in the finals means we'll probably stick with Ken. And the more we win, the more stubborn he's likely to become, and the more likely he is to assert himself as head coach. That's our biggest risk of missing the finals.

Teams with pace that move the ball quickly and accurately will trouble anybody. Especially if they have tall forwards to get on the end of it. And especially if they play a spare defender so that they're able to rebound with ease off half-back. Especially if they can keep it up for pretty much the four quarters. Especially if we are seriously out-coached.

This year there's no outstanding team that's guaranteed to beat anybody on any day. All teams are up and down (yes, even Brisbane) and have had games when they look good and games when they look ordinary.

We're well and truly in the mix.

I dont give a shit about the finals. I want a flag, and for that as I said I still think we are behind many others. This started because someone got offended that people don't think we're the best. But those people are right, we have weaknesses, and ours are worse than a few other major contenders.

For me, it’s when we play and beat Richmond, Collingwood and/or Geelong

Given the history of this Port outfit I am still skeptical of where we really sit.

I see Richmond, Collingwood, Brisbane and to a lesser extent Geelong as top 4 teams.

Brisbane cleaned us up, so wait and see with the rest.
