The alternative to staggered byes is, I guess, for everyone to have a midseason bye in the same week.
I'm not against it.
I bet the TV/ streaming networks would have something to say about that though.

Not sure why it can't be structured so that teams that have the bye, play each other the following week. Also why is the split rounds stretched over 3 weeks? Should be no more than 3 weeks with 6 teams off per week.

It was actually 4 weeks this year. Should be two weeks max, it is ridiculous otherwise.

It's worse than that, two of those games were teams both coming off the bye playing each other. Teams coming off the bye playing teams not coming off the bye (aka our situation) are 0-8.

That's how the bye started, all teams had the same week off. Then Collingwood wanted to play when all but one other team had the week off to maximise their exposure. Then the broadcasters asked for more than just one game on that weekend. So the AFL split the bye over two weeks and has gone from there so that it is now split over four weeks.

I think the bye thing is a load of wank. Most of the bye teams play away from home which is more of a reason why they lost.

Brisbane lost to Hawthorn...at the MCG.
Geelong lost to Port Adelaide...at Adelaide Oval.
Gold Coast lost to Carlton...at the MCG.
Melbourne lost to Geelong...at GMHBA Stadium.
Hawthorn lost to Gold Coast...at Heritage Bank Stadium.
Essendon lost to Fremantle...at Optus Stadium.
Adelaide lost to Collingwood...at the MCG.
West Coast lost to Sydney...at the SCG.

This round:

Richmond plays Brisbane...at the Gabba.
Port Adelaide plays Essendon...at the MCG.
GWS plays Melbourne...at Traeger Park (a Melbourne home game).
Carlton plays Hawthorn at the MCG (Hawthorn home game).
North Melbourne plays Adelaide...at Adelaide Oval.

The only teams that had their return from the bye match at home were Sydney who played St Kilda (St Kilda won) and Fremantle who played Richmond (Richmond won) and this round, the Western Bulldogs who host Fremantle.

It's designed by the AFL to create artificial congestion in the ladder and keep the fans of teams who are in the peloton of teams chasing a final eight berth interested, which keeps the media and sponsors happy.

There's no real reason why the bye would make such a dramatic difference. Someone needs to do the numbers over a long period of time, not just one year, and also benchmark the data against expected result re ladder position/home game, etc.

Hopefully we recalled what happened after the bye in finals 2021 and are going to make a special effort to be switched on from the start this weekend.

If we happen to make a QF, and hopefully win, we need to be able to work out how to play after a bye.

Not to mention the obvious reasons for needing to win at the MCG.

This game is very important, we must win.

Considering how sore many of our players looked after Geelong game, this bye was welcomed. Butters, Rozzee, JHF, Lycett....all freshened up and ready to go.
Essendon without Draper, Sheil and Thatcher will be exposed by quick ball movement from the centre. Stringer is the only x factor threat they have.
Unless it's a major psychological lapse, there is no way we will lose this game.
Our boys are hungry

When I played I hated having a bye.. always felt I lost a bit of edge/form/fitness? I would rather just keep playing
Particularly as there’s an enforced holiday for the players as well.

If I look at the post-bye results, I only see one shock. That was the Hawks beating Brisbane, and even that was at the MCG and Brisbane were overrun late.

I don't think the bye can be blamed for any result where a lesser, or away team got over run.

The bye's impact should be at the start of the game with teams not quite sharp enough, not at the end of the game.

If we start ok, from that point I think the bye is irrelevant and just an easy excuse we should not be using.

Dunno, I reckon us losing to Freo by 30+ is a was big surprise, especially us getting belted in the clearances as we did. Dont think many saw that coming, even if the game was at Optus.

But i think Port is in a different league to us and i dont think they will fall into other teams post bye form, just too good across the Park.

We have a small chance to make it a game but if we fall away id expect Port to put us in the dirt. Anything short of a 4Q effort and we will get toasted.

We only just got over the line against them at home.

We got smashed out of the middle in that game, was a teakle special. Still should have been 6 goals up at 3/4 time with half decent goal kicking.
But, that doesn't mean either of those things won't be there on Saturday, so could easily lose to a fast moving team.
