please do not try and use a reallocation of manufacturing as a cause of this problem. There is zero reason as to why manufactruing going to china made them autocratic. They were already extremely autocratic before. In fact international trade is what brought them much closer to democracy and capitalism. It just fell short because the west got complacent and didnt realise they would also have to push democracy as well rather then just let it happen.

The cause is an autocratic state that values protecting the party over protecting the people. This thing should of been done and dusted in the early weeks of january if local authorities were incentivised to stop it rather then cover it up. In a democracy they would of stopped it.

A question is often asked by non economists: is it more economic to inefficiently produce manufactured goods for security purposes or simply import an excesss supply of the manufacturing good with security issues and continue to produce and export the good/service you have comparitive advantage in. The economic answer is overwhelmingly the latter. You import excess supply of medical equipment and masks if you think that it is at risk during the good times and then continue to produce and export the good/service of comparitive advantage. This is overwehlmingly the efficient welfare beneficial outcome. And this is true even if we completely ignore all the peace benefits that results from trade.


if we close down trade with china the net effect is a world that is economically worse off and the threat of war rises overwhelmingly on top. But who listens to economists? We only come grovelling back to them after the communist experiments fail or we have a world war.

Manufacturing was moved overseas decades ago due to greed and capitalism.

When the USA or aust. Shifts the production of vital supplies to the other side of the world, this creates more risk.

More so, when in conjunction run in time 'business' models and pandemics.

I agree. It's inevitable that people will want to buy cheaper. I think we may have some short term measures until Corona peters out then get back to that principle.

However I think outsourcing of CO2 production overseas to meet targets is more based on a political agenda.
