I agree. It's inevitable that people will want to buy cheaper. I think we may have some short term measures until Corona peters out then get back to that principle.

However I think outsourcing of CO2 production overseas to meet targets is more based on a political agenda.

CO2 isnt an issue in off shoring manufacturing. Its the economies of scale - very few manufacturers want to base their global supply base from Australia because its far away from world markets, and is an a very expensive sea freight lane (because we are the end of the trail, so we dont have the benefits of transshipment to drive volume through our ports)

Manufacturing was moved overseas decades ago due to greed and capitalism.

When the USA or aust. Shifts the production of vital supplies to the other side of the world, this creates more risk.

More so, when in conjunction run in time 'business' models and pandemics.

You will be the first one to whinge if you have to pay $5 for a simple mask saying it's capitalist greed. Or are you prepared to pay $20 for a singlet?

If there are australians working for these companies and complying with their requests then they should be charged with treason

How many people does it take to go on a shopping spree and then ship home 90 tonnes of medical equipment. 100's...1000's? It must have been a huge operation.

How easily can we wean our nation off China's money? Is it even feasible at this point?

The same people who complain about the lack of manufacturing are the same people who complain the cost of living is too high.

complete idiots.

reminds me of the people ten years ago who said we definately need to put a tax on carbon to save the environment but in the next breath complained oil prices were too high and the govt needs to do something to make petrol more affordable.

Many dinkie die bogans are crying 'tradies undies' are many In china. Sounds like they'd be prepared to pay a bit more for it to be Australia made. Not just owned.

Yes, you are right often the consumer wants stuff as cheap as possible but let's not kids our self that's the primary reason most shit is made in Asia

You wish it would just be a "bit more". What do you think cars will cost if manufactured in Australia? it will take billions in subsidies to bring it back and then product shitty expensive cars, just ask Holden.

many dinkie die bogans also stopped buying commodores and falcons too.

the buy australian movement goes back to the 1980's, and australians have been shown time and time again to be all talk and no action on the issue.

Load of rubbish.
They are practically giving away container space heading back the other way. The ships and containers all need to go back.

China is sweet without oz

Not the other way around

Meat processors today:

Three Queensland meatworks — Kilcoy Pastoral Company, the JBS owned Beef City, near Toowoomba, Dinmore, near Brisbane, and the New South Wales' Northern Cooperative Meat Company at Casino — have been suspended by China.

One analyst has told the ABC the four meatworks represent 35 per cent of beef exports to China, a trade that had been on track to reach $3.5 billion this year.

How many more jobs gone?

Tried exporting anything by sea lately? Very hard to be competitive on the world market.

and thats why we have smaller vessel, poorer quality stock (ive received reefers that dont even have doors that shut properly), and more frequent shortages

even with us importing a shit load, we only need smaller vessels to service us.

Holden pulled the pin when the AU$ approached parity with the US$ ( increasing 30% in a year) , due to the mining boom. World wide their product range is dismal, and its clear now that Commodore sales were propping up a top heavy local organisation. Commodores were profitable and not "expensive"
Toyota were happy to stay , but not without the other 2. ( Though they already had a Camry plant in Thailand and then our gov brought in a free trade agreement )
Otherwise they would still be there.
The cars were a lot better engineering wise than, for example a $40 000 Volkswagon.

Where they were struggling was in volumes for features. Electronics were getting more and more integrated, but the local car company's USA owners simply didn't allow the Australian designed platforms to be exported, so it cost more per vehicle to have the electronics. You couldn't make , a luxury version with only 5000/year projected sales, because you competed with vehicles that were selling 100 000 vehicles globally, and therefore were a lot better able to amortise development costs.

From an engineering point of view , A Kia Stinger is very similar to the Australian designed Falcon or Commodore. They start at $50 000.

Car companies love....: Utes. They are easy to design ( refinement/NVH costs a lot of development ) and cheap to make. They get good money for them.
Small SUV's , they take a small car, ie, Mazda 2 , Toyota Corrolla, easily repackage it with a couple of Nm going to the rear wheels, and get an extra $10 000 per vehicle. Many of these small SUV's , ( looking at Mazda in particular ) don't have any more space than the small car they are based on.

Both Utes, and SUV's are not as good as a similar car when it comes to environmental considerations.

What can't they get fro India. Russia. Africa. Etc. ?

Uranium?

Just about every country in the world is diversifying away from China we are not robinson crusoe. Chinese are a weird bunch and the Pork in Africa has been affected by swine flu and they will want to eat good quality meat. We produce what they want for cheap and good quality. The government is in the process of doing what it should have done 10 years ago - diversifying from China. Don't under-estimate what a global consumer boycott will do to China, they've pissed everyone off. Australians are proving to be a proud lot and are supporting some pain to protect our sovereingty, it's not all down to money in the end is it?

We shouldn't be toetwoing to a nation who locks up doctors, puts muslim in re-education camps and possibly uses them as slaves, and kills any dissidents. They've also the home now to three coronavirus pandemics in the past 15 or so years. We must diversify and we will be better for it. Face it, Marcel Proust they are a parasitic nation and despite our state not being squeeky clean we are a good global citizen.

Are our general freight ports even up to bigger vessels?
