Too fast for Talia and too strong for Keath. That's why he's... Buddy.

Keath is probably the better match up but Buddy was getting silver service in the 1st quarter.

Buddy's a freak, but I think people over think playing him too much, with Massie on Franklin being the prime example, they get too worried about his athleticism and neglect the fact that he's 199cm tall and 106kg. The one thing Buddy is average at is his marking, he's not bad, he's just not in the very good to elite bracket, however when you match someone up on him who can generally go with him athletically, he'll just monitor them in the air and on the ground, especially close to goal, and that's when he truly tears sides apart.

It's nigh on impossible to stop the freak goals, like the one on Talia down the wing, no matter who's on him. We could have had Charlie chasing and it wouldnt have mattered. You need to stop him taking marks and winning the contested footy close to goal and this is relatively easily done by putting a strong, tall, relatively athletic KP as they can match his height and strength and generally spoil him most times. This relieves him of 1 or 2 of his scoring methods and suddenly he has to produce freak efforts for goals. The other way around with a more athletic type, he still kicks the freak goals, but also kicks goals from marks or just simply monstoring his opponent in a one on one.

The ideal is probably Talia deep, then Keath follows him up the ground, trouble is the transitions so quick that you end up with Keath in a 1 on 1 20 meters from goal which is less than ideal.

Was good to see Keath get some time on Franklin, it's great experience and in the long run it's probably a good match up, trouble is hes still a relative lightweight and lacks the experience to go with Franklin.

Can't believe some of the responses on the Crow Facebook groups to last nights game. Think I'll be removing myself from them, and I hope these idiots stop supporting the club. Better suited over at Richmond.

We're finals bound and guaranteed top two, playing great footy, and we learned some important lessons on how to play finals footy and succeed last night. All we can do is trust the team to put in the required effort, and enjoy the ride.

I think our fans have gradually built up a culture of negativity and distrust. Plus when positive fans challenge those fans they just counter with 'we want to be elite'! being negative isn't pushing the crows to be elite, being constructively critical and positive is. Ultimately the club knows best. A lot of positives can be taken out of the game. Its a good wake up call. Critiques point to Sydney having a psychological edge now...bullshit. its such a bullshit statement. In fact its beyond dumb. Anyside that dominates and knows it lost due to poor kicking and turnovers is hardly going to be shitting bricks the game.

and unfortunately probably too smart for Hartigan, who would be the perfect matchup otherwise.

That's the concession I'm prepared to make based on the full team playing last night.

Let's hope he held a few things back. On the surface, it looks like he did.
the problem I have with this theory is I thought the same thing the first time we played Geelong in 2016 and it took two more looks at that matchup before we tried anything different.

Yep. Last night, with no chance of losing top 2, 3 weeks out from the finals, Don had a free swing at giving Keath a go against Franklin. And a chance to see what the defence looks like against a major contender if you are forced to shuffle it around.

And we nearly won regardless.

He could've really shown he was foxing and played Massie on him.

Who was it that said premiers lose in August?

Anyway, that loss pissed me off because it was a win for the taking, but in no way does it bother me like a flogging would have, like Collingwood vs Geelong a few years ago.

Last night just reiterates what we already knew, that we are thereabouts and that we need a bit of luck to go our way (or drop Charlie Cameron and Atkins).

And that ultimately if we don't execute we have only ourselves to blame.

We can beat Sydney. We need not fear them.

Remember when he pinged his hamstring against Gold Coast? Played the next week. Tonight he was carried from the ground, everyone thought that's it, season over, only to have him come back out and play on. He might just have a penchant for exaggerating things.

Like how sick his cat really was

Our pressure wasn't quite at the mark which helped Buddy get such good service. I thought Keath did ok on him all things considered.
Agreed, even a couple of the early Buddy goals were from some subtle pushes against Keath when he was a little off balance. I think Keath did pretty well too - but we may choose Harto later down the track, depending on form!

Yes Keath got a big lesson in body work on Franklin more than anything and he will be much better for it, especially once he reviews it with coaches. I was worried early and it sure didn't help him that our whole side started off poorly and that Sydney handled the slippery conditions much better but I thought once he moved off Franklin he rebounded pretty decently for the match. He did look a little tentative after so the confidence had taken an obvious hit but that's completely understandable for such a huge clash in just his 5th match where he probably wanted to do really well in front of 50k fans.

History shows the crows struggle when they get to around 5-6 games in a row without a loss. that loss now resets our mindset.. we will now only have to win 3 or 4 to win the flag depending on what we do sunday..

we are 2 wins away from a GF.... scary hey?

Don't you mean a preliminary final?

West Coast and first final?

A number of posters suggested that we needed to mortgage our future by playing partially fit players to excercise the demons had we actually beaten the Swans. Talk about simpletons. Anyway, there's simply no doubt that a group of people that roll out to play a dead rubber against an opponent that are playing for their life will struggle to keep up.

Pure talent allowed us to keep up. We will iimprove again significantly when we've got something to play for. Our effort tonight was amazing, considering that we had nothing to play for.

Melbourne, here we come.
Someone posted a stat that every one of the last 11 premiership teams has had a loss in August. If true its the loss we had to have.

More importantly, its exorcise the demons
